2. Betrayal
• “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the
hands of men” (9:31)
• “The Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief
priests and teachers of the law” (10:33)
• New information;
‘One of you’
‘One who is eating with me’
‘One who dips bread into the bowl with me’
3. Betrayal
• Betrayal hurts
• Judas has already made the deal (14:10-11)
• “Then Judas, the one who would betray him,
said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “Yes,
it is you.” (Matthew 26:25)
• There is a moment here where Judas should have
repented
4. Memory
• This is my body – the unleavened bread spoke of
the body of Jesus
• Given to the disciples
• There is an invitation – ‘take it’
• This is my blood of the covenant – speaks of his
sacrificial death and the new covenant
• When I drink it anew in the kingdom of God –
there’s a promise of victory
5. Memory
• Do this in remembrance of me (Luke 22:19) –
Jesus set this as a reminder for us
• Why would we need to be reminded of the
greatest event of all time?
• ‘Lest I forget’
6. Worship
• “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to
the Mount of Olives”
• To hear the Lord Jesus sing
• Time was very precious but he chose to sing
• They sang the Hallel - Psalms 115-118
7. Worship
• “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love
endures forever” (Psalm 118:1)
• Jesus walks to Gethsemane with words of the
Father’s love on his lips
• “The LORD is God, and he has made his light
shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the
festal procession, bind the festal sacrifice with
ropes and take it up to the horns of the altar.”
(Psalm 118:27)
• He sings of the sacrifice knowing its referring to
him
8. Intimacy
• “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with
you before I suffer” (Luke 22:16) - literally, ‘with
desire I have desired’
• He washes their feet
• He eats with a betrayer
• He eats with a denier
• He eats with a group full of doubts – “They were
very sad and began to say to him one after the
other, “Surely not I, Lord?” (Matthew 26:22)
9. Intimacy
• He eats with a group who will abandon him –
“Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will
all fall away on account of me, for it is written: "'I
will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the
flock will be scattered.'” (Matthew 26:31)
• Jesus chose to spend his last night with his
disciples, his failures, his friends
• “The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room?”
