The Great Commission and Home Worship
1.
2. The Great Commission
“Then the disciples went [HOME] to Galilee, to
the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but
some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and
said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always”
5. It is a joy HIDDEN to this world
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a
field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then
in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that
field.”
- Matthew 13:44
6. The foundation of the
Great Commission for
any home or person
is worship
7. In The Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught
that worship comes first and it
naturally leads to His Mission
“Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in
heaven, hallowed be your name. Your
kingdom come, your will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:9–10
9. WHAT IS WORSHIP?
Worship is “bending & bowing
before God’s great and holy
presence”
Home Worship is experiencing
God’s great and loving presence as
a family/individual in your home
10. WHEN HAS WORSHIP HAPPENED?
1. When God’s living Presence
becomes the focus of your family
2. When who God is changed who
you and your family are
3. When God’s presence gives you a
new perspective and hope for life
11. There are many different ways home
worship can look but no substitute for it
“Now fear [reverence] the LORD and serve
[worship] him with all faithfulness. Throw
away the gods your forefathers worshiped
beyond the River and serve [worship] the
LORD. . . choose for yourselves this day whom
you will serve [worship] . . . But as for me
and my household, we will serve [worship]
the LORD.”
~ Joshua 24:14-15
12. And day by day, attending the temple
together and breaking bread in their
homes, they [the disciples] received their
food with [1] glad (thankful) and generous
hearts, [2] praising God and having favor
with all the people. And the Lord added to
their number day by day [the great
commission]” Acts 2:46–47
HOW DO WE WORSHIP AT HOME?
13. The possibility of worship in our
homes may seem hidden to us
We have to “choose” to let God’s
presence change our attitudes & the
atmosphere of our homes
“Now faith is being sure of what we
hope for and certain of what we do
not see.” (Heb 11:1)
14. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come
before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that
the LORD is God. It is he who made us,
and we are his; we are his people, the
sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates
with thanksgiving and his courts with
praise; give thanks to him and praise his
name. 5 For the LORD is good and his
love endures forever; his faithfulness
continues through all generations.
Psalm 100
15. Psalm 100: True Worship . . .
V1 – is something people hear
V2 – filled with thanksgiving
V3 – reminds us who God is (praise)
V4 – brings us to God’s Presence
V5 – fills us with faithfulness
16. There are a million ways to “get to” home
worship but no substitute for it
17. Five Ways To Bring
Worship To Your Home
1. Thanksgiving Prayers
Taking turns speaking out short thank you
prayers “For what God has done.” Go back
and forth a few times. This is a great way to
establish an attitude of gratitude in your
home, following 1 Thess 5:18: “give thanks
in all circumstances, for this is God’s
will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Worship To Your Home
2. Praise Prayers
Taking turns speaking out short thank you
prayers “For Who God is.” An easy way to
do this is focus on a specific characteristic
of God , using scriptures to lead your praise.
Psalm 119:68- “You are good, and what you
do is good; teach me your decrees.”
“God, I praise you for always being
good to our family.”

Worship To Your Home
3. Family Communion
Jesus invited the disciples to do this as
often as they desired to remember Him.
The three main purposes are to remember
what Jesus has done, personally examine
one’s life before God, and celebrate His full
redemption at the second coming of Jesus
(1 Corinthians 11:23-32).
20. Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 & invite them
to pray silently any prayers of confession.
“Take the bread, which represents the
body of Christ, broken for you on the
cross. Today, you are completely loved
and cared for by Jesus.”
“Take the cup, which represents the blood
of Christ, shed for you on the cross.
Today, you are fully forgiven in the
name of Jesus.”

Worship To Your Home
4. Worship Through The Psalms
We have an entire book of worship in the
bible- Psalms! Select a Psalm and after
reading through it, ask each person to talk
about their favorite line or stanza in the
Psalm. Turn those thoughts into words and
prayers of worship and praise.
22. Five Ways To Bring
Worship To Your Home
5. Singing
Youtube, iTunes or cds. Look up your
favorite worship song online or set up a
Worship playlist. Invite your children to
be a part of selecting the songs. If you
have a musical member in your family,
consider nurturing them into your
family’s worship leader.
23. “But as for me and my household,
we will serve [worship] the LORD.”
24. Final Thoughts
1. Start having more meals together
2. “Invite” don’t “Demand” others enter into
worship - Don’t be rigid or angry when
people aren’t focused or very interested
3. The first time you use home worship to
recognize a mistake you made will be the
last time others think the time is
worthless
4. The goal is Jesus’ life giving presence
Editor's Notes
Not only the great commission shows worship as the foundation of hearing the great commission but Jesus taught that it was
- we’ve made worship about church and musicians when it is supposed to be about our homes and our hearts
Look at how jesus restored that in the first disciples. They didn’t stop going to temple – but their homes became a powerful place of mission and his majesty.
There was a combination of intentional but relational. Not formal but focused.
Acts – characterizes praise and thanksgiving in their homes
And as that happened in their homes – the Great Commission “the Lord adding to their number daily” became a reality. They lived in praise and thanksgiving. That’s what Great Commission Home looked like
Instead of homes that were known for complaining and negativity – their homes were know for having glad and generous hearts that were full of praise.
Thanksgiving and praise – the call of every GC Christian.
You know you and I choose what our attitude is. Our circumstances don’t choose and others don’t choose for us. Our families choose what our home is going to be like – jobs don’t choose and schools don’t choose.
We choose. And some us are going to have to choose to let go of attitudes that the rest of the people in our home are expecting.
THE POSSIBILITY OF WORSHIP IN OUR HOMES SEEMS HIDDEN TO US
Many of us did not grow up in families that were close, let alone families that worshiped together.
So hearing about having a home and family that worships is hidden from us
We don’t see how it could be
But what is faith –
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Heb 11:1)
So even though you don’t see how worship can be in your house – don’t give up.
Keep listening – have faith your home can be a great commission home filled with worship.
Some of us have the wrong idea of what worship in our homes looks like
Acts 2 was characterized by thanksgiving and praise – not necessarily music – so think about this
Thanksgiving and praise – that’s worship in the home
Those two are the old testament characteristic of worship – ps 100
So let’s look at this passage and how we can begin to live out – this week – having worship in our homes!
