LUBRICITY
IMPROVER
DEFINITION
To prevent early wear on parts like fuel injector pumps and injectors,
gasoline must fulfil minimum lubricity criteria. A decrease in fuel
lubricity is a normal side effect of treating fuels to remove sulphur or
reduce aromatic levels. The Diesel Lubricity Improvers offered by
Petroleum Logistics provide boundary lubrication between moving
fuel system components. We want to assist refiners in meeting the
demands for fuel lubricity in the present while preparing for cleaner-
burning fuels in the future. Additionally, we hope to actively
participate in the lubricity standard development process alongside
the industry and its clients.
3. Diesel Lubricity Additive Study
According to the posters, it is "known
knowledge" that ULSD fuel, which contains
just 15 PPM of sulphur, is insufficient to
adequately lubricate a diesel engine and its
parts (fuel injectors, fuel pump, etcetera).
It may be true for older diesel engines, but
modern diesels are built to cope with the
new fuel, thus it is difficult to recommend
any fuel lubricant as "essential," even though
it may be useful.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF
METHODS HAVE BEEN
DEVELOPED TO
MEASURE FUEL
LUBRICITY:
VEHICLE TESTS
The parts of the fuel system may then
be dismantled and wornness assessed.
The benefit of this test is that it is the
most accurate representation of actual
operating circumstances and that it
measures all wear-related failures, not
only those related to boundary
lubrication. However, tests of this kind
are highly costly and time-consuming
and do not lend themselves to
evaluating a lot of fuel mixtures.
PUMP RIG TESTS
A fuel injection pump is
installed on a test stand and is
powered by an electric motor
during a pump rig test. For a
certain amount of time, fuel is
cycled through the pump. The
pump and any connected
equipment can then be taken
apart and checked for wear and
other negative effects.
