1. Film Brief for Art in Five Cities
This is a 23 minute art documentary in 6 parts, with an episode planned for
each international city: Cape Town, London, Berlin, New York, Rio De Janeiro
are presently intended. Peter Jonas will introduce each episode as the “Art
Doctor” with the objective using art within a local community to regenerate it
by involving children and adults in creating mural and 3D works.
The first episode was shot in Riversdal, Cape Town over two days between
22nd and 23 December 2014, at Hessequa Youth Project, which supports
adult volunteers in teaching township children whose life opportunities are
very limited.
The aim is to create a platform for reciprocal access in each city, so that the
benefits of each project can have global reach and foster new creative
partnerships in years to come.
The footage should show the dereliction of a designated site, leading to
transformation over 2 days. We would want to interview young people, their
families and volunteers involved, both before and after the project highlighting
their everyday lives, their frustrations and their hopes, and showing how the
project has united the group and given them inspiration. We would like to
replicate this model in all five cities, using the continuing process of
completing the documentary alongside creating a social media forum for all
involved to share their ideas and form friendships.
The tone should be in the vein of EXTREME MAKEOVER with ART: enough
unrushed coverage of some intimate and transformational human moments,
combined with an exhilarating bombardment of group activity, suggestions,
setbacks and triumphs as the group bond to complete the task on time.
The Cape Town pilot episode ended with a surprise Christmas party- more
jubilant unveiling footage. We will probably edit all of the episodes in one
location to achieve consistency.
I have an interesting network to help the crew who assist on the next phase.
Whilst this is a start up charitable program we aim to use the footage to apply
for sponsorship to do the other cities.
This is a start-up which we’ll be seeking corporate sponsors for early next
year, and if it succeeds I will definitely send cash compensation to the crew
involved for their efforts on the two days. We required a DOP, possible
camera assistant / sound engineer.
The film equipment was stored safely overnight at the school and we
organized the transport needed ourselves for any filming equipment, which
was minimal. Food and transport costs were covered for the 3-4 crew.
