Challenges As An International Student Essay
Challenges as an International Student and How to Succeed in a Foreign Country
Who wants to study abroad or planning for JTA? I would like to tell you that studying abroad as an international student is very challenging event in
our lives. But, once we accomplish our challenges, we have a bunch of chances to have a better job. So let me talk about my five challenges while
staying here in the Philippines. The first challenge I was dealing with was of course the weather. Since Philippines is hot all the time, I really had to
deal with the hotness. I was sweating every single time, but now I got used to this weather. I think the best way to adapt to the weather is to
increase our fluid intake with water or sports drinks. Staying hydrated is extremely important when staying in hot weather. The second challenge
was adapting to the people. People in the Philippines are kind of friendly. Wherever I go, people are trying to talk to me even if I don't know them.
Maybe since I am a foreigner, they are kind of interested on me, but I felt uncomfortable at first, because people in Korea actually don't talk to the
strangers that much. In this case, we really have to get use...show more content...
Home–sickness is another big challenge that you might have to face when going to a foreign country, unless you already have family or friends
there. Based on my friend who went to Philippines alone, knowing absolutely no one, he faced this problem every day for the first month or so.
This is a very natural and common feeling, but again you cannot sit at a place and wish for things to change. Make a habit of talking to your friends
and family back home regularly, but try not to only talk to them. Go out and talk to people in your new home; make friends, go hang out with some
people, it's not bad. Always try something new which can help us to survive while staying in a foreign

Positive Effects Of Studying Abroad
"97 % of study abroad students found employment within 12 months of graduation, when only 49% of college graduates found employment in the
same period. That means they were twice as likely to find a job. Among study abroad alumni, 90% landed a job within 6 months," quoted in "What
Statistics Show about Study Abroad Students". Studying abroad is becoming a good choice for students. A lot of students have chosen to study
abroad and why is that so? Mostly because students would like to see the world in different points of view and broaden their horizons not tourists but
as a person that lives there. Now a day some countries offer their students to study abroad for free everything is on the country this is called a

The student will be cultured by the friends he gets to meet, by the law of the country and by the habits and traditions of the country. "You will find that
you have a better understanding and appreciation for the nation's people and history", written in (10 Benefits to Studying Abroad). When the student
gets back to the country that he or she came from he could teach his family or friends about the country he was studying in and that has a very positive
affect on the student and his personal growth. For example, studying abroad gives the student the opportunity to make new lifelong friends from
different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. While studying abroad, you will attend university and live with students from various different
backgrounds. This gives you the chance to really get to form bonds and create lasting relationships with the vast pool of students. "Students who study
abroad return home with an informed and much less biased perspective toward other cultures and peoples" cited in "Why study

can be primary, secondary or tertiary levels. Education has taken tremendous leaps over the years. It has experienced significant changes and
advancements. Because of these changes, many people are increasingly becoming educated. Education has also reached the far corners of the world

It is said that education in the west provides practicability and prepares people to educate themselves in life. Studying abroad goes beyond academic
fulfillment. It exposes people to a different worldviews altogether. People learn many things in different countries. Studying abroad exposes people to
different cultures. It teaches about different cultural practices such as rites, rituals and relations. It helps people appreciate these different cultures, as
well. It also educates about different ways of living for example the foods people eat and pass–time activities in which they involve themselves.
Studying abroad also helps to promote inter–cultural relations and communications (Deardorff 253). It also helps people learn different languages.
Another merit for studying abroad is that it enriches someone with knowledge and inter–cultural communication skills that one can apply in their home
country. When people study abroad and return to their home countries, they are able to improve their societies with their acquired knowledge and
they are also able to relate and work well with foreign people in their countries. Another reason why people seek to study abroad is to attain part time
job opportunities even as they pursue their studies. This earns them incomes that they can save or spend for their personal development. People also
involve themselves in volunteer work as part of the process of learning new work relations, inter–cultural

Studying Abroad
College life is full of exciting and challenging opportunities. One of the most anticipated programs for incoming freshmen is studying abroad for a
summer, a semester, or an entire year. This is a way to meet new people, experience new places, and break away from the daily routine of college
living. Some of the exotic destinations for study include Australia, Italy, the British Isles, France, and Germany. The University of Dayton encourages
all students to consider what the study abroad program has to offer.
The program offers a wide variety of opportunities to each and every individual. Students will not only take courses while they are in a foreign country,

Despite any misconceptions, the study abroad program will cost only slightly more than a semester would while being on campus at UD. The fees to
participate in the program include housing, program activities, meals, and tuition (quoted in UD Study Abroad pamphlet). However, some fees are not
included, such as airfare, books, and transportation. It is highly recommended that students always plan accordingly for their spending money.
Students may request additional financial aid while in the study abroad program; they just have to consult their financial aid advisor. In addition to
financial aid, there are a number of scholarship programs that are available and they are designed to support the study abroad program. For example,
the Maureen Hanson '77 Fund, the ISSAP Scholarship Fund, and Cordell W. Hull International Fellows Fund, just to name a few, are all readily
available to give assistance with the financial part of studying abroad (quoted in UD Study Abroad pamphlet).
Year after year, students who participate in this wonderful program are willing to share their great experiences, and they will recommend it without any
hesitation. One such student is Junior, Matthew McCue. Matthew traveled to Australia with the study abroad program, and while he was there, he
climbed a mountain in the Australian Outback, scuba dove in the Great Barrier Reef, and

Differences between American Students and International Students Most young people believe that studying in a different country is a privilege
because they are able to experience other cultures, and learn from them. However, in the United States it is not as good as they thought because
International students have much more pressure being in this country, and sometimes they cannot handle it very well. Therefore, in theUnited States the
life of an international student is very unfavorable if people compare it to the life of an American student. International students have to learn a new
language to study, they cannot work while studying, and their tuition is much more expensive. When people moves to the United Stated to study they

They know their structure and have a very superior vocabulary, so they can compose excellent essays. In addition, since American students speak
English very well, they do not have any problem participating in class. They have confidence in themselves, so they will not be afraid of saying
something wrong. Consequently, because American students do not have to learn any language to study their mayor, it is much easier for them to
achieve excellent grades. Most university students feel the necessity of working since they would like to have their own money in order to be
independent from their parents. It is not the exception for International students because they also feel the necessity of working to be independent
from their parents or whoever is responsible for them. However, for international students to work in the United States it is very difficult because
they are only allowed to work on campus. These kinds of jobs are very limited since some of the campuses in which they study are very small. Also for
an international student to find a job on campus is difficult because people prefer to employee an American student who is not going to have any
problem speaking the language. For example, last semester a friend from Venezuela who is studying at Miami Dade College decided that he wanted
to get a job in order to have his own money. He went to

Internship abroad is good for students
Introduction. (Monique)
In the latest centuries a lot of students are going abroad to do an internship for their study. They go (for example) to Spain, America, England or
Australia and work (approximadiatly) for 5/6 months to gain experience in the work field. When they get back to the Netherlands they will start their
'normal study life ' again. An internship abroad is good for the students because it is good for their development, it is good to get knowledge, and last
but not least it is good because they learn about themselves so they discover a personal brand.

According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers:
– Students with Internships are in demand...73.7% of employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience (NACE 2012 Job Outlook).
– Students with global internships have better odds of getting hired...42.3% of students with an internship experience receive AT LEAST one job offer
versus 30.7% of students without an internship.
– Students with internships make more money... The starting salary for students with an internship experience is 20% higher.
Example: Interning abroad lends a real world understanding of diversity and multiculturalism, which cannot always be achieved through travel and
study only.
You can't afford NOT to go. It's an experience you will never forget!
Conclusion. (Marle)
Many students have the opportunity to do an internship abroad. It is a big step to take but it definitely is worth it. An internship is good for students
because internship abroad is good for your development. Secondly, internship is good for your knowledge. Moreover, an internship abroad is good to
learn about yourself and to discover your personal brand.

Studying Abroad
Have you ever thought about studying abroad? No, not just for a few months for your work–experience, but a whole year (or longer) as a
transfer–student. Of course, you don't make such a decision from one minute to the next. It needs to be thought over well. Going to college is a big
change in your life because it usually means living on your own for the first time, but as a foreign student it is even a bigger change because you are on
your own in another country. This is often the greatest concern for students to go abroad: to leave everything behind. They have trouble leaving their
family and the familiar environment. They think this price is just too high. But if they only knew how rich they will be when they come...show more

There are several philosophies about international education. For instance, there is a belief, ironically arisen by the Second World War, that improved
international understanding can prevent another war in the future. C. E. Speakman, the author of International Exchange in Education puts it this way:
"if foreigners could only see what we are really like, they would not fight us." When you consider studying abroad, you might not think about
preventing a war, but indeed, learning about other cultures can be very beneficial. Especially nowadays, when the media and Internet make it possible
for people of different cultures to interact more intensely with one another, understanding of each other's culture is essential. M. A. Reischauer,
professor of history at Harvard University and former U.S. ambassador to Japan, claims that cultural learning is even essential for human survival
because "the world is becoming a single great global community."
Yet, is cultural learning essential for a culture, like the one of the United States, that seems quite similar to the Dutch culture? Maybe you think you
already know what the Americans are like. But based on what? The news reports about the president's daily pursuits you hear on the radio, the
adventures of "Friends" you watch on television, and the Statue of Liberty you saw on your holiday trip to New York? This is not the real America.
Isn't the Dutch culture more than

American colleges and universities in a wide range of fields" (Carter, Paragraph 2, 2008). The United States has the highest number of students who are

For me, art history discussion session is most challenging. I become very nervous the night before the discussion and "participation grade" is the
only word that pops out of my head during every session. I start to lose confidence as I observe other students analyzing the art work perfectly.
Although participation grade is not based on correctness, I cannot stop worrying about whether what I am thinking is right or wrong and how people
are going to think of my accents. Not only do students feel stressful in verbal context, they also face difficulties in essays. Because of their limited
vocabulary, students have hard time expressing their knowledge clearly on essay exams or research paper, and the different format of writings
preferred in American colleges and universities often confuse international students with their native format of writings (Lin and Yi, Paragraph 7,
1997). For example, while American writings follow a specific structure with a clear main idea, supporting evidence and a conclusion, Eastern Asian
writings don't have a specific format. Also, according to Lin and Yi, many international students are hired as teaching assistants, and students who are
enrolled in their classes can misinterpret due to their accents or incorrect application of language. International students face difficulties in social

I discovered a love for art history my freshman year in an honors course with Dr. Esther Sparks. She was so passionate about art history and her
students. Dr. Sparks painted such a vivid picture of the history behind the art, its importance and significance. When considering study abroad
locations, because of the class I took on a whim and Dr. Sparks whom I adored, I knew I wanted to travel somewhere with rich history, culture, art,
and architecture. On every street corner of Florence, Italy, stands some piece of history; therefore, I have chosen this location for my study abroad
experience. I am completely awestruck by not only the beauty of these masterpieces, but by the stories they hold. I find myself daydreaming of the
people who created these magnificent structures, who they were, and what they thought of themselves and their creations. My goal is to immerse
myself in the culture and absorb as much knowledge and understanding of Italian history and traditions as I possibly can so that I may, in turn, become
a more well rounded individual.

Australia is a popular study country with students from around the world. Particularly, in order to gain a top quality education, many international
students study at university, however adjusting at the university life is not easy because of language proficiency, crossing culture and different social

culture shocks and time management. Also I will present how to cope with the problems for successful adjustment to university study and life.
Language barrier is a hindrance to international students' adjustment. (Andrade, 2006). According to Andrade "international students hesitate to
participate in class discussions since they have difficulty understanding classroom lectures" (2006, p.145). As an international student, I sympathize this
fact, because Language proficiency is make me feel lack of confidence. Sometimes, lectures and domestic students speak so fast, certain topics are
difficult and using advanced vocabulary. In some topics, I even do not know how to express with my own language. Therefore, it is much hard for me
to discuss about the topic. It cause to miss classes and behind academic studying. Actually, it takes time the transition of adjustment, thus the students

Persuasive Essay About Study Abroad
You may be among those asking this question: why study abroad? Simply because you feel you don't have enough money to study abroad. There are
many benefits of studying abroad; even though you might not have the study abroad opportunities other rich men kids have. Getting admission into
American universities is not hard, if you have the requirements for the program you would like to study. Scholarships to study abroad for
undergraduates are also available, but the scholarships for international students are hard to come by. If you have funding from home, how to manage
the finances is always hard.
Managing finances is the hardest things if you are studying abroad. You have a new overall economy, with new currency and other pricing methods.
If you think that living and studying abroad is a next step closer of becoming an adult, then you should perceive money management as your initiation
process in that direction.
It involves self–awareness, persistence and a great deal of personal restraint.
So, we have provided these 5 best tips on how to improve your money management when studying abroad and avoid distressful situations like
borrowing money or sitting at home with no plans for weekend as a result of lack of money.
Make a budget
This is probably the most important thing when you're a students studying abroad. You need to know how much money you've got over a time period.
Include everything that one could think of simply because this will reduce the chances of unexpected spending.
First, you will have to become accustomed with the local currency and the exchange rates. Do not compare your domestic prices using the prices
abroad. Rather, try knowing the general standard in the city you are residing and convert the currency in your head. If everything becomes easier for
you, you could make a subscription plan that shows the equivalence relating to the 2 currencies (for example 10 USD =? 10 euro =?)
This is necessary while studying abroad because at first spending money won't feel like "real money" in your head. This is true especially during the
time of inflation is very big and you happen to keep bills of hundreds and even thousands around you. For instance, $10 is equivalent to 3,600 Nigerian
Naira.

Challenges As An International Student Essay

  • 1. Challenges As An International Student Essay Challenges as an International Student and How to Succeed in a Foreign Country Who wants to study abroad or planning for JTA? I would like to tell you that studying abroad as an international student is very challenging event in our lives. But, once we accomplish our challenges, we have a bunch of chances to have a better job. So let me talk about my five challenges while staying here in the Philippines. The first challenge I was dealing with was of course the weather. Since Philippines is hot all the time, I really had to deal with the hotness. I was sweating every single time, but now I got used to this weather. I think the best way to adapt to the weather is to increase our fluid intake with water or sports drinks. Staying hydrated is extremely important when staying in hot weather. The second challenge was adapting to the people. People in the Philippines are kind of friendly. Wherever I go, people are trying to talk to me even if I don't know them. Maybe since I am a foreigner, they are kind of interested on me, but I felt uncomfortable at first, because people in Korea actually don't talk to the strangers that much. In this case, we really have to get use...show more content... Home–sickness is another big challenge that you might have to face when going to a foreign country, unless you already have family or friends there. Based on my friend who went to Philippines alone, knowing absolutely no one, he faced this problem every day for the first month or so. This is a very natural and common feeling, but again you cannot sit at a place and wish for things to change. Make a habit of talking to your friends and family back home regularly, but try not to only talk to them. Go out and talk to people in your new home; make friends, go hang out with some people, it's not bad. Always try something new which can help us to survive while staying in a foreign Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Positive Effects Of Studying Abroad "97 % of study abroad students found employment within 12 months of graduation, when only 49% of college graduates found employment in the same period. That means they were twice as likely to find a job. Among study abroad alumni, 90% landed a job within 6 months," quoted in "What Statistics Show about Study Abroad Students". Studying abroad is becoming a good choice for students. A lot of students have chosen to study abroad and why is that so? Mostly because students would like to see the world in different points of view and broaden their horizons not tourists but as a person that lives there. Now a day some countries offer their students to study abroad for free everything is on the country this is called a scholarship nevertheless there are many positive effects of studying abroad....show more content... The student will be cultured by the friends he gets to meet, by the law of the country and by the habits and traditions of the country. "You will find that you have a better understanding and appreciation for the nation's people and history", written in (10 Benefits to Studying Abroad). When the student gets back to the country that he or she came from he could teach his family or friends about the country he was studying in and that has a very positive affect on the student and his personal growth. For example, studying abroad gives the student the opportunity to make new lifelong friends from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. While studying abroad, you will attend university and live with students from various different backgrounds. This gives you the chance to really get to form bonds and create lasting relationships with the vast pool of students. • 3. Pros and Cons of Studying Abroad Essay Study Abroad Studying abroad is an act whereby students move to different countries other than their own to pursue education opportunities. Education of this form can be primary, secondary or tertiary levels. Education has taken tremendous leaps over the years. It has experienced significant changes and advancements. Because of these changes, many people are increasingly becoming educated. Education has also reached the far corners of the world and more people are attaining it. In the present day, countries strive to become more and more developed. For this reason there is an increasing need for better education. Societies with advanced education systems and many educated people attain growth and development rapidly. For this reason, ...show more content... It is said that education in the west provides practicability and prepares people to educate themselves in life. Studying abroad goes beyond academic fulfillment. It exposes people to a different worldviews altogether. People learn many things in different countries. Studying abroad exposes people to different cultures. It teaches about different cultural practices such as rites, rituals and relations. It helps people appreciate these different cultures, as well. It also educates about different ways of living for example the foods people eat and pass–time activities in which they involve themselves. Studying abroad also helps to promote inter–cultural relations and communications (Deardorff 253). It also helps people learn different languages. Another merit for studying abroad is that it enriches someone with knowledge and inter–cultural communication skills that one can apply in their home country. When people study abroad and return to their home countries, they are able to improve their societies with their acquired knowledge and they are also able to relate and work well with foreign people in their countries. Another reason why people seek to study abroad is to attain part time job opportunities even as they pursue their studies. This earns them incomes that they can save or spend for their personal development. People also involve themselves in volunteer work as part of the process of learning new work relations, inter–cultural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. International Study Essay Studying Abroad College life is full of exciting and challenging opportunities. One of the most anticipated programs for incoming freshmen is studying abroad for a summer, a semester, or an entire year. This is a way to meet new people, experience new places, and break away from the daily routine of college living. Some of the exotic destinations for study include Australia, Italy, the British Isles, France, and Germany. The University of Dayton encourages all students to consider what the study abroad program has to offer. The program offers a wide variety of opportunities to each and every individual. Students will not only take courses while they are in a foreign country, but they will also have the...show more content... Despite any misconceptions, the study abroad program will cost only slightly more than a semester would while being on campus at UD. The fees to participate in the program include housing, program activities, meals, and tuition (quoted in UD Study Abroad pamphlet). However, some fees are not included, such as airfare, books, and transportation. It is highly recommended that students always plan accordingly for their spending money. Students may request additional financial aid while in the study abroad program; they just have to consult their financial aid advisor. In addition to financial aid, there are a number of scholarship programs that are available and they are designed to support the study abroad program. For example, the Maureen Hanson '77 Fund, the ISSAP Scholarship Fund, and Cordell W. Hull International Fellows Fund, just to name a few, are all readily available to give assistance with the financial part of studying abroad (quoted in UD Study Abroad pamphlet). Year after year, students who participate in this wonderful program are willing to share their great experiences, and they will recommend it without any hesitation. One such student is Junior, Matthew McCue. Matthew traveled to Australia with the study abroad program, and while he was there, he climbed a mountain in the Australian Outback, scuba dove in the Great Barrier Reef, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. International Students Essay example Differences between American Students and International Students Most young people believe that studying in a different country is a privilege because they are able to experience other cultures, and learn from them. However, in the United States it is not as good as they thought because International students have much more pressure being in this country, and sometimes they cannot handle it very well. Therefore, in theUnited States the life of an international student is very unfavorable if people compare it to the life of an American student. International students have to learn a new language to study, they cannot work while studying, and their tuition is much more expensive. In addition, since American students speak English very well, they do not have any problem participating in class. They have confidence in themselves, so they will not be afraid of saying something wrong. Consequently, because American students do not have to learn any language to study their mayor, it is much easier for them to achieve excellent grades. Most university students feel the necessity of working since they would like to have their own money in order to be independent from their parents. It is not the exception for International students because they also feel the necessity of working to be independent from their parents or whoever is responsible for them. However, for international students to work in the United States it is very difficult because they are only allowed to work on campus. These kinds of jobs are very limited since some of the campuses in which they study are very small. Also for an international student to find a job on campus is difficult because people prefer to employee an American student who is not going to have any problem speaking the language. For example, last semester a friend from Venezuela who is studying at Miami Dade College decided that he wanted to get a job in order to have his own money. • 6. Internship abroad is good for students Introduction. (Monique) In the latest centuries a lot of students are going abroad to do an internship for their study. They go (for example) to Spain, America, England or Australia and work (approximadiatly) for 5/6 months to gain experience in the work field. When they get back to the Netherlands they will start their 'normal study life ' again. An internship abroad is good for the students because it is good for their development, it is good to get knowledge, and last but not least it is good because they learn about themselves so they discover a personal brand. Argument 1: Internship abroad is good for your development. (Britt) Argument: The special feature of an internship abroad is that students get experience in becoming...show more content... According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers: – Students with Internships are in demand...73.7% of employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience (NACE 2012 Job Outlook). – Students with global internships have better odds of getting hired...42.3% of students with an internship experience receive AT LEAST one job offer versus 30.7% of students without an internship. – Students with internships make more money... The starting salary for students with an internship experience is 20% higher. Example: Interning abroad lends a real world understanding of diversity and multiculturalism, which cannot always be achieved through travel and study only. You can't afford NOT to go. It's an experience you will never forget! Conclusion. (Marle) Many students have the opportunity to do an internship abroad. It is a big step to take but it definitely is worth it. An internship is good for students because internship abroad is good for your development. Secondly, internship is good for your knowledge. Moreover, an internship abroad is good to learn about yourself and to discover your personal brand.

  • 8. Studying Abroad Essay Studying Abroad Have you ever thought about studying abroad? No, not just for a few months for your work–experience, but a whole year (or longer) as a transfer–student. Of course, you don't make such a decision from one minute to the next. It needs to be thought over well. Going to college is a big change in your life because it usually means living on your own for the first time, but as a foreign student it is even a bigger change because you are on your own in another country. This is often the greatest concern for students to go abroad: to leave everything behind. They have trouble leaving their family and the familiar environment. They think this price is just too high. But if they only knew how rich they will be when they come...show more content... There are several philosophies about international education. For instance, there is a belief, ironically arisen by the Second World War, that improved international understanding can prevent another war in the future. C. E. Speakman, the author of International Exchange in Education puts it this way: "if foreigners could only see what we are really like, they would not fight us." When you consider studying abroad, you might not think about preventing a war, but indeed, learning about other cultures can be very beneficial. Especially nowadays, when the media and Internet make it possible for people of different cultures to interact more intensely with one another, understanding of each other's culture is essential. M. A. Reischauer, professor of history at Harvard University and former U.S. ambassador to Japan, claims that cultural learning is even essential for human survival because "the world is becoming a single great global community." Yet, is cultural learning essential for a culture, like the one of the United States, that seems quite similar to the Dutch culture? Maybe you think you already know what the Americans are like. But based on what? The news reports about the president's daily pursuits you hear on the radio, the adventures of "Friends" you watch on television, and the Statue of Liberty you saw on your holiday trip to New York? This is not the real America. Isn't the Dutch culture more than Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Problems of International Students Essays "In 2006 to 2007, according to the data compiled by the Institute of International Education, 582,984 students from all over the world were enrolled in American colleges and universities in a wide range of fields" (Carter, Paragraph 2, 2008). The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes...show more content... For me, art history discussion session is most challenging. I become very nervous the night before the discussion and "participation grade" is the only word that pops out of my head during every session. I start to lose confidence as I observe other students analyzing the art work perfectly. Although participation grade is not based on correctness, I cannot stop worrying about whether what I am thinking is right or wrong and how people are going to think of my accents. Not only do students feel stressful in verbal context, they also face difficulties in essays. Because of their limited vocabulary, students have hard time expressing their knowledge clearly on essay exams or research paper, and the different format of writings preferred in American colleges and universities often confuse international students with their native format of writings (Lin and Yi, Paragraph 7, 1997). For example, while American writings follow a specific structure with a clear main idea, supporting evidence and a conclusion, Eastern Asian writings don't have a specific format. Also, according to Lin and Yi, many international students are hired as teaching assistants, and students who are enrolled in their classes can misinterpret due to their accents or incorrect application of language.
