Positives And Negatives Of Consumerism
Just what is consumerism, and is it beneficial or detrimental to our economy and society? Basically, consumerism is the ideology that people must
buy products and services in order to allow the economy to function correctly, but is this line of thinking accurate? It is entirely possible that
consumerism is creating a downward slope, leading us into greed and selfishness; but it is also argued that consumerism is merely a means to
stimulate the economy and produce a better society as a whole. There are flaws in the system of course: pollution, greed, wasted materials; but there
are also benefits to it, such as, the creation of new jobs, the growth of businesses, and even a show of patriotism. In essence, consumerism is both a
positive and a negative force in the modern world, depending on how it is utilized and portrayed, for example: a person with a positive world value
would best consider balancing out their life so they are neither needlessly consuming nor being a minimalist to a...show more content...
There is methods of taking it too far, such as wearing the same dress for an entire year (Holt 1–3), but there is a way to use minimalism within reason to
benefit both arguments. And while it is good to care about the environment and not waste materials, people should not take it to extremes that could be
unhygienic or detrimental to their health. (Holt 1–3). A perfect example of a healthy medium would be being considerate to the fact that consumers
have the option to only buy necessities and the occasional goods and/or services for entertainment or pleasure (Millburn and Nicodemus). The idea of
the healthy medium has long been since argued from even before the 1980's, when people considered the idea of "Whoever dies with the most toys
wins," to today where many are starting to think that we must "Make due with less" (Kennedy), but is either side fully

The Scenarios Of Consumer 's Futures 2020
By 2020, the world could develop into a myriad of different scenarios, but there is no one scenario that can accurately represent what the US, let alone
the world, will become–even in four short years. The four scenarios in "Consumer's Futures 2020" has options that could unfold, but it is unlikely in
such a short timeframe. Nevertheless, the most likely of the four–presented scenarios to me is 'sell it to me.' This is because the scenario allows people
to keep spending and minimizes the work individuals have to put into becoming more sustainable. It also marks a more prosperous, flourishing
economy that enables the option to buy more selectively the brands and products that intrigue them. Lastly, this scenario utilizes the technology that we
are already hyper reliant on to generate more personalized business. Many of these aspects are already occurring to some degree, but I can see them
becoming more prominent over time.
The market is currently well on the mend, with unemployment rates decreasing and overall incomes increasing; I disagree with the scenario as,
contrary to scenario 3, awareness of income inequality is more mainstream and being combated. With this increasing upward mobility, consumers
want to buy more and more, as many US citizens mark their prosperity on how much you can buy. Already emerging is the demand for organic foods
to be sold in conventional grocery stores. People also spend a little extra to buy brands that give them the perception of wealth–like

Consumerism Has Changed Our Society
Consumerism over centuries has shaped our society into the world we live in today. Throughout our history, the American dream has been to become
the most successful person you can possibly become given the opportunities presented to you. Consumerism has provided our country with a lot of
jobs and efficient sources of income for the general population. Consumerism gives our country an upside unlike many other countries in that you
could grow up in a hardworking blue collar family and become the most successful person in America. Even though consumerism has a lot of positive
effects, it also could be the reason for a lot of society's issues that people have to live through day in and day out.
A positive effect that consumerism has had on our society is that consumerism has made our society more hard working and driven. Consumerism
has also shaped our society to be more free spirited because our society has been able to produce a lot of products, giving us choices like the type of
clothes we can wear or the type of house we can buy. Another positive effect that consumerism has had on our society is that it has made us more
competitive. On most suburban streets, you can see numerous fast food chains right next to each other; this competition makes us become more
creative and more efficient thinkers. When a person has to make a critical decision like finding something to eat for dinner, they have many options
and maybe their decision can come down to being best tasting food.

Consumer Consumption Essay
Are You What You Buy?
As a society we are embedded in a culture of consumption. Consumerism brings out a passion in people to have things, be it objects or services that
will make them feel better. This "passion" becomes a powerful force that makes people make some unwise decisions in their life. The money
consumers spend on these goods could be going to the ever–surmounting needs for health care, poverty help, or other things that would help the society
as a whole. This is why America is the prime example of a capitalistic consumer society and not a socialistic country. Peoplewant things for themselves
before anyone else. All cultures need consumerism to survive, because we need food, shelter, and clothing and the last time I checked...show more

From my experience, and especially one I can remember from my childhood, playing on my middle schools basketball team where all of us
wanted to wear the exact same pair of black Air Jordan's with black Jordan socks. I had already bought some shoes but as soon as the season was
approaching and the new edition came out we were all obsessing with having them, especially since our best player on the team had just got a pair.
After a few days of constantly asking my parents gave in and I was ecstatic. My favorite part about getting new shoes was going to the store and
looking at all the shoes on the wall but knowing that I was getting the best and most expensive pair. "Kids can recognize logos by eighteen months,
and before reaching their second birthday, they're asking for products by brand name. By three and a half, experts say children start to believe that
brands communicate their personal qualitiesВ…"( W109R 43).The next day was great and although not everyone could afford the shoes everyone
who started that year did have the all black Air Jordan's and we looked great.
Consumption can also be looked at in the form of the store and how its design and the feelings their designs are meant to generate. At the top of the
store group are

Consumer Society In The United States
"Since the end of the Second World War the USA has been transformed into a society where the national economy depends to a large extent on private
consumption; and where mass acquisition and use of material goods is the dominant lifestyle, the centerpiece of social practices, leisure time, cultural
rituals and celebrations. We refer to it as consumer society." "Consumer society has evolved through a sophisticated exploitation of the fundamental
human quest for a meaningful life and wellbeing. "In essence, a transition beyond consumerism would entail a society–eide evolution toward different
lifestyles and conceptions of well–being, as well as a transformation of the system." "Rapid emergence of consumer society during the first tow decades

Consumer sovereignty is the theory that consumers are the main elements in the economy because they exert ultimate control over the economy.
Through their spending decisions, individual consumers ultimately determine the quantities and qualities of goods and services produced and the
availability of these goods and services in time and space.
An example of consumer sovereignty is illustrated as follows: A drinks company introduces two types of drinks in two continents: Drink A and Drink
B. Drink A sells very well in Africa and Drink B in Asia. Only the one that sells well in Africa (Drink A) will remain in production in Africa whilst the
one that sells well in Asia (Drink B) will remain in production in Asia. Continuing to produce Drink B in Africa and Drink A in Asia is not
economically viable as the consumers in these regions do not prefer it. Thus, through their purchasing pattern, the consumers have influenced what
goods continue to remain in production.
The underlying assumptions for consumer sovereignty theory in an ideal market are:
i.That the consumers are rational and try to make choices that maximize their utility ii. That consumers have all the information needed to make the
optimal choice iii. That consumers are able to purchase goods and services in a competitive marketplace
Based on the above, consumer sovereignty in healthcare would imply that society benefits at large when healthcare providers and organizations
compete to develop high quality products and

The Impact Of Consumerism On Our Society Today
Consumerism has played an important role in our society today. Whether it is the shoes we wear or the shampoo we use in our hair, the idea of
being a consumer and what products attract us contribute to how we identify ourselves within our society. When people go the store to purchase a
product, they tend not to think how the package affects them. Thomas Hine's "What's in a Package" emphasizes how packaging is essential to attract
a customer to buying the given item. He further explains that not only do these packages subconsciously affect customers, the product can also say
something about the person based on their purpose of buying it. In addition, Hines also expresses in his article that the way a package is presented to
us as consumers affects our expectations when purchasing the product and how each package in the store is competing for our attention. These
numerous choices of items come in all different shapes and sizes, and there are different ways in which these items appeal to each consumer. For
instance, the bold letters or the bright colors can catch the attention of a buyer. Even the amount of information provided in the item or the ingredients
used can play a factor on whether this product is the right product to consider buying. Packaging is key for an advertisement to be successful. The
product I decided to choose to analyze was my Clinique Stay–matte Liquid Foundation. What attracted me to this foundation is how the packaging
goes straight to the point with

Yes. counsumer is king in india. because consumer know what to buy what not to buy. they are educated. and laws also give protection to customer
.consumer protection act is example. |

As per my counterview. Consumers are realy not consumers. Consumers bear an invisible tag of being 'KINGS'. They actually are not. In sense its
just to attract the consumers & misguide them by a feel that they are valuable to the market. Consumers is just an ATM to debit cash into the sellers
accounts. And make profits to the companies. As richers are linged in market. But what about middle class & poor class. Kings never negotiate but

Yes the consumer is the king of the market because the success of the business is totally depend on the consumer. As we all known the marketing starts
with the consumer needs and ends with the fulfillment of the needs of the consumer. |

No, I don't think that the consumers are really the king. According to my point of view actually only those consumers are king who have huge
amount to spend or you cn sy that who have more time n money to waste. A local consumer cn never be the king. Here is an expl: like if a person
purchase a refrigerator. After some days he/she noticed that the refrigerator is not the 1st one it is a second hand machine n also not working properly.
Then the person goes to that stor from where he/she purchased it. Guess what! the stor man refuged to take that machine back, and instid of taking back
he is blaming the customer.
After that the person goes to the company of that machine. Same thing happens with him/her at that place. At last after no option is avilable he/she
goes to the consumer court and after all complains and enquiries the store man found guilty. Now the high amount of 20, 000 rs goes into the consumer

The Rise of Consumer Culture Essay
Consumer culture has developed over the years for many different reasons such as the demise of the social class and embourgeoisement which are
both key factors in capitalism and has therefore led to the argument that consumer society merely reflects the rise of capitalism which I plan to discuss
within this assignment. The origins of consumer culture have been discussed by Grant McCracken (1998) who argues that there is minimal agreement
in regards to the origins of consumer society. McCracken took on the viewpoint that it would not be beneficial to look at a specific point in time in
which consumer culture arose but to primarily focus on patterns of changes within culture and how these pattern of changes led to the reformation of
society....show more content...
However the works of Neil Mckendrick (1982) led him to the viewpoint that consumer culture began in eighteenth century England with the
commercialization of fashion which led to a mass change in people's taste. So according to McKendrick the sudden change in people's taste in relation
to fashion during the eighteenth century meant that terminology such as 'style' developed and represented the shift in demand for items of clothing
that was produced on a larger scale by new technology within the textile industry and marketing to a mass audience through improvements in printing
technology which allowed and supported mass advertising to all members in society. The third was the development of the department store. According
to McCracken the Department store changed the nature of purchasing activity because department stores essentially institutionalized consumption and
changed the way in how consumers were influenced and to how much influence they were subjected to in relation to purchasing goods and services.
From looking at the work of McCracken and McKendrick it is clear that the development of the consumer society came from an increase in the supply
and demand mindset which is a key factor or element within a consumer society. Also the change in meaning in relation to consumption is another
example of the development of the consumer culture because the term consumption was ignited through a new sense of

Outline the view that in a consumer society, rising affluence is associated with more waste and greater recycling.
Introduction:
During the course of this essay, I will look at the key debates.
Firstly: How our industry has changed, together with how we appear to consume more in today's society.
Secondly: I will look at the idea "seduced and repressed" used by (Zygmunt Bauman 1988) expanding upon how our shopping habits have changed.
Thirdly: I will be looking at the claim that we are a throw–away society, seeking the underlying reason why we choose to discard and throw away more
waste.
I will look at the efforts used to influence our decisions into recycling more, highlighting what the benefits of recycling are.
Lastly: I will sum up in my overall conclusion whether or not a rise in people's affluence is directly associated to a rise in waste.
Industry, within the United Kingdom has changed, during the 1960 and 1970 manufacturing was a significant part of our economy, however many
business were government run and failed to respond to international markets. These state own businesses just could not afford to run and were sold off
as they were loss making and were just not efficient (Wikipedia 2015). However manufacturing still continues though not on the same scale, many of
these businesses have transferred overseas, where production costs are considerably lower.
The biggest change to our economy has been towards the service sector. According to an online report:

Consumerism In Modern Society
Modern Society and Consumerism. Consumerism has became a part of every aspect of modern life. Parts of our lives that were not altered by
consumerism, now have to conform with this phenomenon that has taken control. Consumerism is a reality that has always happened in developed
nations, in which people purchase goods and services that they do not need. Nevertheless, with the Industrial Revolution the way the economy
worked changed completely. An incredible amount of resources was now available to a wide range of the population. With the Industrial
Revolution also came the capitalism. The capitalism was a new form of economy that caused a rapid growth of middle classes in developed
societies (Webster). The population that was considered part of the middle class now had money to acquire not just basic needs for consumption but
also other other goods and services they wanted. To better understand the term "consumerism" we must first understand what it means and who it
affects. To consume signifies using something to satisfy one's own needs and desires. To be a consumer means purchasing goods and services for
personal use. As stated by Bauman, "consumed things cease to exist, literally or spiritually." They tend to be used in a physical way (by eating them
or or wearing them) or in a spiritual way (when something loses its personal value). Buying and owning things has became a huge necessity for people.
With the development of technology, the way we share information was

Consumer Society And The Social Society
This essay will seek to explore the view that a consumer society produces both winners and losers. A consumer society is "a society that is defined
as much by how and what people purchase and use, as by what they make or do" (Blakeley and Staples, 2014, p. 16). Firstly it will look a Zygmunt
Bauman's concept of the seduced and repressed and some of the social inequalities that can underpin this. It will briefly introduce conspicuous
consumption in relation to the seduced. Secondly supermarket power and monopolies are discussed. Finally it will introduce the concepts of
positive and zero sum games in relation to supermarkets. Bauman's argument is that "society remains unequal and divided today on the basis of
whether or not you are in a position to consume effectively" (Allen, 2014, p.275) although he also argues that "the forms of inequality and
freedom in a consumer society differ from what went on before" (Bauman (2008) cited in Allen, 2014, p.175). In the past social divisions were
based on lines such as class and the type of jobs people held. The new divisions are based on "more recent economic cultural and political drivers"
(Allen, 2014, p.275). Bauman's theory divides society into two categories; the seduced and the repressed. The seduced are those fully able to
consume effectively in society. These are often seen as people that are more likely to "fit" into society with the clothes they wear, the places they go
and the goods they buy for example. This latter

The Consumer Society Essay
"People recognise themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobiles, hi–fi sets, split level homes.........social control is anchored
in the new needs which the consumer society has produced." (Marcuse,1968:24)To what extent are we controlled by the consumer society we live in?
The rise of the consumer culture is a phenomenon characteristic for the twentieth century. The impact of this cultural movement is disputable.
The quote above was taken from Marcuse's book "One dimensional man."(1964) Marcuse believed that the products of consumer capitalism
indoctrinate and manipulate society to promote a false consciousness of needs which become a way of life. He saw this as another form of
totalitarianism which binds...show more content...
He argues that in the age of consumption the identities are negotiated though consumption, with which he means that we define ourselves more and
more by what we consume. His last characteristic to the definition of consumer culture is that Consumer Culture represents the increasing importance
of Culture in the exercise of power.
Ritzer (1999) refers to the places in which consumption takes place "cathedrals of consumption." He argues that there are obvious cathedrals of
consumption such as the supermarket, internet shopping or the shopping malls, but also ordinary everyday locations, which we would not associate
with consumption, such as the railway station, the library or even our living room at home. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by cathedrals of
consumption which aim to entice us to consume.
Once can detect three different theories, to the power of these cathedrals of consumption. Weberian theory leads to the view that the cathedrals of
consumption, when taken together, create a rationalized iron cage from which it is difficult, if not impossible, to escape. This is totally commodified
world in which it would be futile, or nearly so, to hope to find a space in which one is free from commercial pressure.
Supportive of this view is the proliferation of the new means of consumption, especially their spread into the home, so that even one is unable to avoid
opportunities

Corporations that claim to be concerned with their carbon footprint can expect their credibility to be regularly contested. This relentless scrutiny stems
from environmental activists like Naomi Klein who firmly denounce capitalism and propagate a belief that businesses care only for competition and
profit. Admittedly, businesses require profit to survive; such is the nature ofcapitalism. However, motive is irrelevant when tangible progress is being
made. As per the clichГ©, actions speak louder than words, and the electronics industry in particular exemplifies this proverb. Consumer electronics are
so seamlessly integrated into society that people rarely consider the environmental impact of cell phones and computers; consumers, for example, may
be unaware that electronic waste (aka e–waste) accounts for 70% of toxic waste produced ("11 facts About E–Waste"). Fortunately, the industry has
adopted eco–friendly business practices to combat the repercussions of socio–technological integration. Critics of corporations, however, continuously
dismiss any progress made in the industry because it is motivated by market competition. This view of economic competition is misguided. While their
intentions fall short of magnanimous, leading corporations in the electronics industry have become more sustainable as a result of capitalism and
competition, demonstrating that motive is of little concern when real progress is made and, ultimately, critics' expectations of the industry are

The producers of goods here in the UK would inevitably buy goods that have been produced or manufactured abroad. Food journalist Felicity
Lawrence (2004) says in her book "Not on the label" about the plight of the foreign worker, agency staff and gang masters around the country. The
staffs are paid low wages and deductions are illegally taken from them by the gang masters, they work outside their restrictions and have no health
or safety rules in the work place, these people work many hours at food processing plants. These are the losers of the consumer society; we could
argue that though the cheaper labour is a part of why we get our food cheaper, supermarkets are taking advantage of this. But Lawrence argues you
would not find any evidence of underpay or illegal activities on a salad packet or on other labelled food. Power again comes into play here, the big
stores are taking huge advantages using the cheap labour and this is how the supermarket survives by selling cheaper produce. It is not only food that
warrants cheap labour. In 200–7 a large organisation "War on Want" based in the UK looked into howAsda and Tesco boosted their profits and found
they were utilising garment workers in the sweatshops of Bangladesh. The mostly female staffs worked in terrible conditions, unhygienic and
overcrowded, unlike conditions we have here in the UK, Asda and Tesco were found to be paying less than the hourly rate and in the case of one
worker in Dhaka, she brought home

Consumer Society and Choice
A consumer society is a post–industrial term used to describe the fact that society is characterised more by what people consume and less by the jobs
they do or goods they produce (Hetherington, 2009). As our relationship with consumerism has changed so too have the choices available of why,
when, where and how we consume. The first part of this assignment will look at the characteristics of a consumer society, the choices available and
identify the divisions created from unequal choices. The second part will consider the role of the Big four supermarkets (TESCO, Asda, Sainsbury and
Morrison's) in providing choice to people.
The term consumer society goes beyond the mere act of shopping and the functional use of goods with contemporary...show more content...
Larger stores also offer people the convenience of additional services along with their shopping, for example post office, pharmacy and opticians. By
addressing consumer's expectations and using their buyer power they can offer a choice of products to reflect consumer's diverse budgetary, dietary,
ethical and environmental requirements. Furthermore their global buyer power enables consumers to benefit from choosing exotic produce all year
round. With 30,000,000 customers (Bevan cited in Allen, 2009) choosing to use the big four supermarkets on a weekly basis it would suggest that they
provide a format that consumers want.
Supermarkets also claim that their economic leverage enables them to benefit local communities by building stores and providing social and economic
regeneration packages. One such example is Linwood, on the outskirts of Glasgow (Allen, 2009). The closure of a main employer left the centre of
Linwood economically scarred. A proposal to build a new Tesco supermarket in the area and attract other special retailers to the ailing Town Centre was
met with enthusiasm by local residents. Supporters of supermarkets advocate that everyone within the supply chain (customers, communities and
suppliers) benefit from supermarkets, a concept Dennis Wrong terms the "positive sum game" (Allen, 2009).
Anti–supermarket campaigners have a counterclaim that the big four abuse their dominant position in the marketplace and restrict

Positives And Negatives Of Consumerism

  • 1. Positives And Negatives Of Consumerism Just what is consumerism, and is it beneficial or detrimental to our economy and society? Basically, consumerism is the ideology that people must buy products and services in order to allow the economy to function correctly, but is this line of thinking accurate? It is entirely possible that consumerism is creating a downward slope, leading us into greed and selfishness; but it is also argued that consumerism is merely a means to stimulate the economy and produce a better society as a whole. There are flaws in the system of course: pollution, greed, wasted materials; but there are also benefits to it, such as, the creation of new jobs, the growth of businesses, and even a show of patriotism. In essence, consumerism is both a positive and a negative force in the modern world, depending on how it is utilized and portrayed, for example: a person with a positive world value would best consider balancing out their life so they are neither needlessly consuming nor being a minimalist to a...show more content... There is methods of taking it too far, such as wearing the same dress for an entire year (Holt 1–3), but there is a way to use minimalism within reason to benefit both arguments. And while it is good to care about the environment and not waste materials, people should not take it to extremes that could be unhygienic or detrimental to their health. (Holt 1–3). A perfect example of a healthy medium would be being considerate to the fact that consumers have the option to only buy necessities and the occasional goods and/or services for entertainment or pleasure (Millburn and Nicodemus). The idea of the healthy medium has long been since argued from even before the 1980's, when people considered the idea of "Whoever dies with the most toys wins," to today where many are starting to think that we must "Make due with less" (Kennedy), but is either side fully Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Scenarios Of Consumer 's Futures 2020 By 2020, the world could develop into a myriad of different scenarios, but there is no one scenario that can accurately represent what the US, let alone the world, will become–even in four short years. The four scenarios in "Consumer's Futures 2020" has options that could unfold, but it is unlikely in such a short timeframe. Nevertheless, the most likely of the four–presented scenarios to me is 'sell it to me.' This is because the scenario allows people to keep spending and minimizes the work individuals have to put into becoming more sustainable. It also marks a more prosperous, flourishing economy that enables the option to buy more selectively the brands and products that intrigue them. Lastly, this scenario utilizes the technology that we are already hyper reliant on to generate more personalized business. Many of these aspects are already occurring to some degree, but I can see them becoming more prominent over time. The market is currently well on the mend, with unemployment rates decreasing and overall incomes increasing; I disagree with the scenario as, contrary to scenario 3, awareness of income inequality is more mainstream and being combated. With this increasing upward mobility, consumers want to buy more and more, as many US citizens mark their prosperity on how much you can buy. Already emerging is the demand for organic foods to be sold in conventional grocery stores. People also spend a little extra to buy brands that give them the perception of wealth–like Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Consumerism Has Changed Our Society Consumerism over centuries has shaped our society into the world we live in today. Throughout our history, the American dream has been to become the most successful person you can possibly become given the opportunities presented to you. Consumerism has provided our country with a lot of jobs and efficient sources of income for the general population. Consumerism gives our country an upside unlike many other countries in that you could grow up in a hardworking blue collar family and become the most successful person in America. Even though consumerism has a lot of positive effects, it also could be the reason for a lot of society's issues that people have to live through day in and day out. A positive effect that consumerism has had on our society is that consumerism has made our society more hard working and driven. Consumerism has also shaped our society to be more free spirited because our society has been able to produce a lot of products, giving us choices like the type of clothes we can wear or the type of house we can buy. Another positive effect that consumerism has had on our society is that it has made us more competitive. On most suburban streets, you can see numerous fast food chains right next to each other; this competition makes us become more creative and more efficient thinkers. When a person has to make a critical decision like finding something to eat for dinner, they have many options and maybe their decision can come down to being best tasting food. • 4. Consumer Consumption Essay Are You What You Buy? As a society we are embedded in a culture of consumption. Consumerism brings out a passion in people to have things, be it objects or services that will make them feel better. This "passion" becomes a powerful force that makes people make some unwise decisions in their life. The money consumers spend on these goods could be going to the ever–surmounting needs for health care, poverty help, or other things that would help the society as a whole. This is why America is the prime example of a capitalistic consumer society and not a socialistic country. Peoplewant things for themselves before anyone else. All cultures need consumerism to survive, because we need food, shelter, and clothing and the last time I checked...show more content... From my experience, and especially one I can remember from my childhood, playing on my middle schools basketball team where all of us wanted to wear the exact same pair of black Air Jordan's with black Jordan socks. I had already bought some shoes but as soon as the season was approaching and the new edition came out we were all obsessing with having them, especially since our best player on the team had just got a pair. After a few days of constantly asking my parents gave in and I was ecstatic. My favorite part about getting new shoes was going to the store and looking at all the shoes on the wall but knowing that I was getting the best and most expensive pair. "Kids can recognize logos by eighteen months, and before reaching their second birthday, they're asking for products by brand name. By three and a half, experts say children start to believe that brands communicate their personal qualitiesВ…"( W109R 43).The next day was great and although not everyone could afford the shoes everyone who started that year did have the all black Air Jordan's and we looked great. Consumption can also be looked at in the form of the store and how its design and the feelings their designs are meant to generate. Consumer Society In The United States "Since the end of the Second World War the USA has been transformed into a society where the national economy depends to a large extent on private consumption; and where mass acquisition and use of material goods is the dominant lifestyle, the centerpiece of social practices, leisure time, cultural rituals and celebrations. We refer to it as consumer society." "Consumer society has evolved through a sophisticated exploitation of the fundamental human quest for a meaningful life and wellbeing. "In essence, a transition beyond consumerism would entail a society–eide evolution toward different lifestyles and conceptions of well–being, as well as a transformation of the system." • 6. Consumer sovereignty is the theory that consumers are the main elements in the economy because they exert ultimate control over the economy. Through their spending decisions, individual consumers ultimately determine the quantities and qualities of goods and services produced and the availability of these goods and services in time and space. An example of consumer sovereignty is illustrated as follows: A drinks company introduces two types of drinks in two continents: Drink A and Drink B. Drink A sells very well in Africa and Drink B in Asia. Only the one that sells well in Africa (Drink A) will remain in production in Africa whilst the one that sells well in Asia (Drink B) will remain in production in Asia. Continuing to produce Drink B in Africa and Drink A in Asia is not economically viable as the consumers in these regions do not prefer it. Thus, through their purchasing pattern, the consumers have influenced what goods continue to remain in production. The underlying assumptions for consumer sovereignty theory in an ideal market are: i.That the consumers are rational and try to make choices that maximize their utility ii. That consumers have all the information needed to make the optimal choice iii. That consumers are able to purchase goods and services in a competitive marketplace Based on the above, consumer sovereignty in healthcare would imply that society benefits at large when healthcare providers and organizations compete to develop high quality products and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. The Impact Of Consumerism On Our Society Today Consumerism has played an important role in our society today. Whether it is the shoes we wear or the shampoo we use in our hair, the idea of being a consumer and what products attract us contribute to how we identify ourselves within our society. When people go the store to purchase a product, they tend not to think how the package affects them. Thomas Hine's "What's in a Package" emphasizes how packaging is essential to attract a customer to buying the given item. He further explains that not only do these packages subconsciously affect customers, the product can also say something about the person based on their purpose of buying it. In addition, Hines also expresses in his article that the way a package is presented to us as consumers affects our expectations when purchasing the product and how each package in the store is competing for our attention. These numerous choices of items come in all different shapes and sizes, and there are different ways in which these items appeal to each consumer. For instance, the bold letters or the bright colors can catch the attention of a buyer. Even the amount of information provided in the item or the ingredients used can play a factor on whether this product is the right product to consider buying. Packaging is key for an advertisement to be successful. The product I decided to choose to analyze was my Clinique Stay–matte Liquid Foundation. What attracted me to this foundation is how the packaging goes straight to the point with Get more content on HelpWriting.net

'Supermarkets/stores enticing you in through their doors goes back to the industrial era, where the early department stores first opened up to the wealthy seducing them with a variety of goods that before could only be bought from specialist people, it then progressed to letting the poorer working class in through the doors i.e Selfridges opened its doors to the wealthy then decided to hold the Penny sale days where the poorer could have a taste of the luxuries they sold, Woolworths then came along and catered for all walks of life. Consumers are realy not consumers. Consumers bear an invisible tag of being 'KINGS'. They actually are not. In sense its just to attract the consumers & misguide them by a feel that they are valuable to the market. Consumers is just an ATM to debit cash into the sellers accounts. As we all known the marketing starts with the consumer needs and ends with the fulfillment of the needs of the consumer. | | | | | | No, I don't think that the consumers are really the king. According to my point of view actually only those consumers are king who have huge amount to spend or you cn sy that who have more time n money to waste. A local consumer cn never be the king. Here is an expl: like if a person purchase a refrigerator. After some days he/she noticed that the refrigerator is not the 1st one it is a second hand machine n also not working properly. Then the person goes to that stor from where he/she purchased it. Guess what! the stor man refuged to take that machine back, and instid of taking back he is blaming the customer.

  • 11. The Rise of Consumer Culture Essay Consumer culture has developed over the years for many different reasons such as the demise of the social class and embourgeoisement which are both key factors in capitalism and has therefore led to the argument that consumer society merely reflects the rise of capitalism which I plan to discuss within this assignment. The origins of consumer culture have been discussed by Grant McCracken (1998) who argues that there is minimal agreement in regards to the origins of consumer society. McCracken took on the viewpoint that it would not be beneficial to look at a specific point in time in which consumer culture arose but to primarily focus on patterns of changes within culture and how these pattern of changes led to the reformation of society....show more content... However the works of Neil Mckendrick (1982) led him to the viewpoint that consumer culture began in eighteenth century England with the commercialization of fashion which led to a mass change in people's taste. So according to McKendrick the sudden change in people's taste in relation to fashion during the eighteenth century meant that terminology such as 'style' developed and represented the shift in demand for items of clothing that was produced on a larger scale by new technology within the textile industry and marketing to a mass audience through improvements in printing technology which allowed and supported mass advertising to all members in society. The third was the development of the department store. According to McCracken the Department store changed the nature of purchasing activity because department stores essentially institutionalized consumption and changed the way in how consumers were influenced and to how much influence they were subjected to in relation to purchasing goods and services. From looking at the work of McCracken and McKendrick it is clear that the development of the consumer society came from an increase in the supply and demand mindset which is a key factor or element within a consumer society. Also the change in meaning in relation to consumption is another example of the development of the consumer culture because the term consumption was ignited through a new sense of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. TMA 3 Outline the view that in a consumer society, rising affluence is associated with more waste and greater recycling. Introduction: During the course of this essay, I will look at the key debates. Firstly: How our industry has changed, together with how we appear to consume more in today's society. Secondly: I will look at the idea "seduced and repressed" used by (Zygmunt Bauman 1988) expanding upon how our shopping habits have changed. Thirdly: I will be looking at the claim that we are a throw–away society, seeking the underlying reason why we choose to discard and throw away more waste. I will look at the efforts used to influence our decisions into recycling more, highlighting what the benefits of recycling are. Lastly: I will sum up in my overall conclusion whether or not a rise in people's affluence is directly associated to a rise in waste. Industry, within the United Kingdom has changed, during the 1960 and 1970 manufacturing was a significant part of our economy, however many business were government run and failed to respond to international markets. These state own businesses just could not afford to run and were sold off as they were loss making and were just not efficient (Wikipedia 2015). However manufacturing still continues though not on the same scale, many of these businesses have transferred overseas, where production costs are considerably lower. The biggest change to our economy has been towards the service sector. According to an online report: Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Consumerism In Modern Society Modern Society and Consumerism. Consumerism has became a part of every aspect of modern life. Parts of our lives that were not altered by consumerism, now have to conform with this phenomenon that has taken control. Consumerism is a reality that has always happened in developed nations, in which people purchase goods and services that they do not need. Nevertheless, with the Industrial Revolution the way the economy worked changed completely. An incredible amount of resources was now available to a wide range of the population. With the Industrial Revolution also came the capitalism. The capitalism was a new form of economy that caused a rapid growth of middle classes in developed societies (Webster). The population that was considered part of the middle class now had money to acquire not just basic needs for consumption but also other other goods and services they wanted. To better understand the term "consumerism" we must first understand what it means and who it affects. To consume signifies using something to satisfy one's own needs and desires. To be a consumer means purchasing goods and services for personal use. As stated by Bauman, "consumed things cease to exist, literally or spiritually." They tend to be used in a physical way (by eating them or or wearing them) or in a spiritual way (when something loses its personal value). Buying and owning things has became a huge necessity for people. With the development of technology, the way we share information was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Consumer Society And The Social Society This essay will seek to explore the view that a consumer society produces both winners and losers. A consumer society is "a society that is defined as much by how and what people purchase and use, as by what they make or do" (Blakeley and Staples, 2014, p. 16). Firstly it will look a Zygmunt Bauman's concept of the seduced and repressed and some of the social inequalities that can underpin this. It will briefly introduce conspicuous consumption in relation to the seduced. Secondly supermarket power and monopolies are discussed. Finally it will introduce the concepts of positive and zero sum games in relation to supermarkets. Bauman's argument is that "society remains unequal and divided today on the basis of whether or not you are in a position to consume effectively" (Allen, 2014, p.275) although he also argues that "the forms of inequality and freedom in a consumer society differ from what went on before" (Bauman (2008) cited in Allen, 2014, p.175). In the past social divisions were based on lines such as class and the type of jobs people held. The new divisions are based on "more recent economic cultural and political drivers" (Allen, 2014, p.275). Bauman's theory divides society into two categories; the seduced and the repressed. The seduced are those fully able to consume effectively in society. These are often seen as people that are more likely to "fit" into society with the clothes they wear, the places they go and the goods they buy for example. • 15. The Consumer Society Essay "People recognise themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobiles, hi–fi sets, split level homes.........social control is anchored in the new needs which the consumer society has produced." (Marcuse,1968:24)To what extent are we controlled by the consumer society we live in? The rise of the consumer culture is a phenomenon characteristic for the twentieth century. The impact of this cultural movement is disputable. The quote above was taken from Marcuse's book "One dimensional man."(1964) Marcuse believed that the products of consumer capitalism indoctrinate and manipulate society to promote a false consciousness of needs which become a way of life. He saw this as another form of totalitarianism which binds...show more content... He argues that in the age of consumption the identities are negotiated though consumption, with which he means that we define ourselves more and more by what we consume. His last characteristic to the definition of consumer culture is that Consumer Culture represents the increasing importance of Culture in the exercise of power. Ritzer (1999) refers to the places in which consumption takes place "cathedrals of consumption." He argues that there are obvious cathedrals of consumption such as the supermarket, internet shopping or the shopping malls, but also ordinary everyday locations, which we would not associate with consumption, such as the railway station, the library or even our living room at home. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by cathedrals of consumption which aim to entice us to consume. Once can detect three different theories, to the power of these cathedrals of consumption. Weberian theory leads to the view that the cathedrals of consumption, when taken together, create a rationalized iron cage from which it is difficult, if not impossible, to escape. This is totally commodified world in which it would be futile, or nearly so, to hope to find a space in which one is free from commercial pressure. Supportive of this view is the proliferation of the new means of consumption, especially their spread into the home, so that even one is unable to avoid opportunities Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Corporations that claim to be concerned with their carbon footprint can expect their credibility to be regularly contested. This relentless scrutiny stems from environmental activists like Naomi Klein who firmly denounce capitalism and propagate a belief that businesses care only for competition and profit. Admittedly, businesses require profit to survive; such is the nature ofcapitalism. However, motive is irrelevant when tangible progress is being made. As per the clichГ©, actions speak louder than words, and the electronics industry in particular exemplifies this proverb. Consumer electronics are so seamlessly integrated into society that people rarely consider the environmental impact of cell phones and computers; consumers, for example, may be unaware that electronic waste (aka e–waste) accounts for 70% of toxic waste produced ("11 facts About E–Waste"). Fortunately, the industry has adopted eco–friendly business practices to combat the repercussions of socio–technological integration. Critics of corporations, however, continuously dismiss any progress made in the industry because it is motivated by market competition. This view of economic competition is misguided. While their intentions fall short of magnanimous, leading corporations in the electronics industry have become more sustainable as a result of capitalism and competition, demonstrating that motive is of little concern when real progress is made and, ultimately, critics' expectations of the industry are Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 20. The producers of goods here in the UK would inevitably buy goods that have been produced or manufactured abroad. Food journalist Felicity Lawrence (2004) says in her book "Not on the label" about the plight of the foreign worker, agency staff and gang masters around the country. The staffs are paid low wages and deductions are illegally taken from them by the gang masters, they work outside their restrictions and have no health or safety rules in the work place, these people work many hours at food processing plants. These are the losers of the consumer society; we could argue that though the cheaper labour is a part of why we get our food cheaper, supermarkets are taking advantage of this. But Lawrence argues you would not find any evidence of underpay or illegal activities on a salad packet or on other labelled food. Power again comes into play here, the big stores are taking huge advantages using the cheap labour and this is how the supermarket survives by selling cheaper produce. It is not only food that warrants cheap labour. In 200–7 a large organisation "War on Want" based in the UK looked into howAsda and Tesco boosted their profits and found they were utilising garment workers in the sweatshops of Bangladesh. The mostly female staffs worked in terrible conditions, unhygienic and overcrowded, unlike conditions we have here in the UK, Asda and Tesco were found to be paying less than the hourly rate and in the case of one worker in Dhaka, she brought home Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Consumer Society and Choice A consumer society is a post–industrial term used to describe the fact that society is characterised more by what people consume and less by the jobs they do or goods they produce (Hetherington, 2009). As our relationship with consumerism has changed so too have the choices available of why, when, where and how we consume. The first part of this assignment will look at the characteristics of a consumer society, the choices available and identify the divisions created from unequal choices. The second part will consider the role of the Big four supermarkets (TESCO, Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison's) in providing choice to people. The term consumer society goes beyond the mere act of shopping and the functional use of goods with contemporary...show more content... Larger stores also offer people the convenience of additional services along with their shopping, for example post office, pharmacy and opticians. By addressing consumer's expectations and using their buyer power they can offer a choice of products to reflect consumer's diverse budgetary, dietary, ethical and environmental requirements. Furthermore their global buyer power enables consumers to benefit from choosing exotic produce all year round. With 30,000,000 customers (Bevan cited in Allen, 2009) choosing to use the big four supermarkets on a weekly basis it would suggest that they provide a format that consumers want. Supermarkets also claim that their economic leverage enables them to benefit local communities by building stores and providing social and economic regeneration packages. One such example is Linwood, on the outskirts of Glasgow (Allen, 2009). The closure of a main employer left the centre of Linwood economically scarred. A proposal to build a new Tesco supermarket in the area and attract other special retailers to the ailing Town Centre was met with enthusiasm by local residents. Supporters of supermarkets advocate that everyone within the supply chain (customers, communities and suppliers) benefit from supermarkets, a concept Dennis Wrong terms the "positive sum game" (Allen, 2009). Anti–supermarket campaigners have a counterclaim that the big four abuse their dominant position in the marketplace and restrict Get more content on HelpWriting.net
