supplies needed to gesso
or prime a canvas…
DEMO
Prepare Surface with
gesso and small amount of
yellow ochre.
Let Dry.
Discuss Project.

8. Desaturated Saturated
Start with white add a
tiny amount of blue until
you reach the mid-tone.
Then switch to blue
adding white to achieve
similar value steps.
MID-TONE

Color + Black = Shading

MATERIALS NEEDED TODAY:
•Palette Paper
•Brushes
•Water
•Acrylic Painting Medium
•Chalk
COLOR PALETTE:
•Ultramarine Blue
•Cadmium Red Medium
•Titanium White

12. 1. Draw with
chalk the
basic
composition
(shapes)
onto
surface.
*Making sure
not to put
the
sun/moon
shape in the
center of
picture.

13. 2. Choose the color format for
painting the background:
• Blue sky (ULTRAMARINE BLUE)
OR
• Red sky (CADMIUM RED MEDIUM)

14. 3. Begin with sun/moon first. Paint the
circle with Titanium White.

15. REMEMBER:
Add a few drops of the medium each time you add
more color to the mixture…
This will keep the color from drying and getting darker.

16. 4. Add a tiny amount of
the Cadmium Medium
Red to the Titanium
White.
Use this to paint the
first ring.

the Ultramarine Blue
to the Titanium

21. Count how many rings you have left in the sky…
Notice the farthest ring is the pure (saturated) color.
Paint that outside ring… with the pure color.
Continue with the lighter mixture adding more color
until the sky is complete!

Start with pure Titanium White.
Paint the farthest mountain with the White *.

23. Count how many mountain gradations you will
need to create before you reach full
saturation of your color.

coming forward until you reach the closest
mountain.
