Africa Online Volunteering Service is a not for profit organization that provides a platform to
connect offsite volunteers with organizations in Africa. Our Mission is to bridge the gap between
people and groups interested in Africa’s development and charity organizations and initiatives for
the African people. By the use of a computer and an internet connection screened organizations
can post realistic volunteer opportunities for free and individuals can volunteer for these
organizations. Our objective is to provide a convenient platform and conditions for the best virtual
volunteering experience and making impact in Africa.

Who is an AOVS online volunteer?
An AOVS online volunteer is any individual above age 18 that volunteers time and skills over
the Internet, freely and without financial considerations, for the benefit of Africa.
What can AOVS online volunteers do?
AOVS online volunteers can support civil society organizations, community based
organizations, non-governmental organizations, orphanages and other charitable
organizations in their activities over the internet. Upon agreement with the organization
AOVS online volunteers can also travel for onsite volunteering.
How does online volunteering work?
The Africa Online Volunteering Service offers a database of online volunteering opportunities
submitted by development organizations in Africa. Interested individuals identify opportunities
that match their interests, expertise and skills, and submit their applications directly to the
organizations, which select the volunteers they would like to engage in their activities.
What services are offered by AOVS?
The Africa Online Volunteering Service offers a reliable platform to facilitate the management
of opportunities and online volunteers, makes referrals for guidance on online collaboration, and
shares best practices and lessons learned via the website, the monthly newsletter and email-based
user support. AO V S ensures that the host organization communicates with volunteers
appropriately and efficiently, understands the fundamentals of volunteer management, and is
ready to involve volunteers before they are actually recruit online volunteers.
Does AOVS screen organizations?
Development organizations that apply for registration are screened before they can use our
services and recruit volunteers. Organizations are eligible if they are officially registered, non-
profit, active in the field of sustainable human development, non-discriminatory.

Do AOVS online volunteers receive financial compensation?
AOVS online volunteers share their time and expertise on a voluntary basis and do not receive
any financial compensation. Being able to contribute to sustainable human development, develop
knowledge and skills, expand networks and work in a multicultural environment are some of the
many benefits of online volunteering.
Who can apply for the AOVS online volunteering opportunities?
Everyone above the age of 18 can apply for an opportunity published on the AOVS website.
Why do I have to be 18 or above to apply for opportunities?
This is for the protection of people who have not yet reached the age of legal majority (which in
most countries is 18), and also a way of ensuring that AOVS online volunteers possess the skills
and experience required by African development organizations.
How do I apply for an volunteering opportunity?
To apply for an opportunity that matches your profile and interest, click on Impact Search and
on the opportunity’s description page and complete the application form. You have to attach
your CV before submitting the application directly to the organization.
Can I get a certificate?
The Africa Online Volunteering service offers a ready-made certificate that organizations may
issue to their volunteers. It features the title of the opportunity, the volunteer’s name, and the
organization’s name and logo. Once both you and the organization have submitted a feedback,
the organization can issue the certificate.
The Africa Online Volunteering Service, do not at any time charge any application, processing or
training fee. Any announcement with a fee attached should be rejected and reported.
Unauthorized commercial reapplication, reproduction, or retransmission, in a whole or part, is
prohibited and should be reported.
