1. Is it expensive?
You have choices. $300 will give you a
professional recorded family history on
sound with a CD/DVD and a photo book.
$500 will give you a video interview on a
DVD and a photo book.
How long will the whole process take?
I talk with you, record your memories, edit
the sound and picture for quality control
and then present you with the memories on
CD/DVD and a photo book. Together it
take us four weeks.
Have I much experience?
Will over twenty years be OK? I can show
you samples of my work and you can listen
to them too.

destination unknown.
When you arrive in this place you
never knew existed, you are
handed over to strangers. You
have no idea when you will see
your family again.
It sounds unbelievable but during

Patrick Craddock is a former New Zealand
broadcaster with a long and varied history in using
media. He was a radio producer during the early days
of “Morning Report” and on “Radio NZ
International” and the first Manager of “The Radio
New Zealand Continuing Education Unit”.
His professional skills embrace journalism, oral
history and using media for education. He worked for
three years in Papua New Guinea in Broadcasts to
Schools, for several years at The University of the
South Pacific in Fiji teaching broadcast journalism
and media education and running workshops in
Tonga, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
His African experience includes work in Kenya,
Mozambique and Malawi where he trained local
broadcasters to write and produce a series of radio
educational drama programs using “soap opera”
techniques and public broadcasting field days.
His first venture into Oral History took place many
years ago when he recorded his mother in England as
she sat at the piano singing songs she loved.
“Recording a life story is an exciting process. I have
professional equipment and when I record with you,
it will be under a tree in your garden, or in your home
or my home. It can be sound only or video or both.
From the start of a project to the end, it will take us
around a month. As a extra, I will ask you for some of
your favourite photographs or slides. I’ll scan them
and put them into a beautiful coloured photo book.”
Patrick Craddock is a permanent resident of
Greytown and lives with his partner Peggy Duncan in
Wood Street who enjoys developing an organic fruit
and vegetable garden.
