INTRODUCTION
 Higher education in United States of America.
 Developing Countries/Exchange Rates.
 High Volume of incoming international students.
 Low funding and Scholarship opportunities.
 Difficulty in managing funds.
PROBLEM DEFINITION
 High education cost in USA
 Students face difficulty in managing educational/non educational expenses
 Expenses like a) Tuition Fee
b) Living Cost
c) Food Cost
d) Recreational Cost
 So here in this project we tried to Optimize the overall
cost using Deterministic Optimization approach.
DECISION VARIABLES
 Let Ti (Cost of Tuition fee) = 1 If the ‘i’ course is selected
= 0 If the ‘i’ course is not selected
where ‘i’ is 1,2,….,7
1=Engineering
2=Business
3=Fine Arts
4=Nursing
5=Medical School
6=School of Pharmacy
7=Law School
DECISION VARIABLES
 Let Lj (Cost of Living Expenses) = 1 If the ‘j’ apartment is selected
= 0 If the ‘j’ apartment is not selected
where ‘j’ is 1,2,….,16

Please note:-
Fur – Furnished Apartment
Unfur- Unfurnished Apartment
SO- Single Occupancy
DO- Double Occupancy
DECISION VARIABLES
 Let Fk (Cost of Food Expenses) = 1 If ‘k’ meal pass is selected
= 0 If ‘k’ meal pass is not selected
where k=1,2….8
1=Warrior Pass 50 2=Warrior Pass 250 3=Warrior pass 400 4=Weekly 12 pass
5=Weekly 5 Pass 6=Block 15 Pass 7=Block 30 pass 8= Block 45 pass
DECISION VARIABLES
 Let Rl (Cost of Recreational Activities) = 1 If ‘l’ activity is selected
= 0 If ‘l’ activity is not selected
where l=1,2,3
1=Mort Harris fitness Center
2= Cross Fit fitness Center
3=Health Studio Centre
 Let Hm (Cost of Health Insurance) = 1 if ‘m’ insurance is selected
=0 if ‘m’ insurance is not selected
Where m=1,2
1= Annual Insurance cost
2= Semester(Fall+Winter) insurance cost
OBJECTIVE FUNCTION
 The objective of project is to minimize the total annual expenses (Budget) of international
students according to his priority.
Minimize Z= ( 21763 T1 + 23252 T2 + 22229 T3 + 28449 T4 + 65346 T5 + 40073 T6 +
33727 T7 ) + ( 7250 L1 + 5534 L2 + 4672 L3 + 7720 L4 + 5760 L5 + 6580 L6 + 7888 L7 + 5280

+ ( 3520 F1 + 3920 F2 + 4160 F3 + 3450 F4 + 1590 F5 + 1050 F6 + 2000 F7 + 2950 F8 ) + ( 432
R1 + 745 R2 + 600 R3) + (1193 H1+1112 H2 )
CONSTRAINTS
 Tuition Fee
T1+T2+T3+T4+T5+T6+T7=1
Student can select only one course at a time
 Living Expenses
L1+L2+L3+L4+L5+L6+L7+L8+L9+L10+L11+L12+L13+L14+L15+L16 = 1
Student can live in only one apartment at a time
 Food Expenses
F1+F2+F3+F4+F5+F6+F7+F8 = 1
 Recreational Activities
R1+ R2+R3 = 1
 Health Insurance
H1+H2=1
MODEL FORMULATION
 250 Unique Cases.
 Every Case have different Priorities and
budget.
CASE 1
CASE 2
CONCLUSION
 250 unique cases have been optimized using deterministic optimization using
excel solver technique
 The optimum solution for above two cases were
Case 1= $ 31,558
Case 2= $ 32,146
