There are many cultures around the world, each with a unique set of characteristics. For example, I identify myself as a Korean–American. Education
and family is valued over the individual. We hold the superstition that shaking one's leg means shaking away one's luck. As a Korean–American, we
believe that our elders should be respected. For example, when we see an elder, we bow and say hello. Birthday celebrations for immediate family
members and relatives include eating seaweed soup to promote health. Growing up in a Korean–American household, my family did not talk and
discuss mental health. However, my family showed a lot of verbal and non–verbal affection with one another. This is one kind of culture. Culture is
denoted as "a system of values, beliefs, ways of thinking, routines, rituals, and institutions established by a group or population ... provides ways of
looking at the world ... determines patterns of feelings and behavior in everyday life" (Brooks, 2013, p. 34). Two cultural models are used in order to
categorize cultures into one group or the other.
Two Cultural Models Individualistic. This is also known as the independent model of social systems. Many cultures in "Europe, North America,
Australia, and New Zealand" (Brooks, 2013, p. 35) use this cultural model. Cultures that follow the individualistic model define self "in terms of
personal choices, goals, and achievements. This system is a self– or ego–centric system" (Brooks, 2013, p. 35). The individual's

The people of the world speak approximately 250 different languages across countries; they dress in different ways and eat different foods. Societies
share basic institutions such as government, the educational system and religious institutions. Therefore, culture is a learned system of shared beliefs
and habits of doing activities that guide a person`s daily behavior.
In this essay, I will be comparing the cultural dimensions of Japanese culture with that of the culture of my country, India. I will be comparing the four

to explain everything. India scores 51, in preference towards long term culture. In India, religious and philosophical thoughts are ruled by 'karma'.
They favor religious thoughts because the nations dominate religion; Hinduism is more of a philosophy of ideas, views and mysterious beliefs. Japan
scores 88, one of the highest long–term oriented society. They believe in 'doing the best in one`s lifetime' and are guided by those virtues. Even
Managers are future oriented and strive for long term goals and value investments.

In the world we live in, we are surrounded by hundreds of people with different backgrounds and identities different then our own. Fresno itself,
according to the Fresno County Website, says we are one of the "most diverse counties in the state of California" (County Department). With all that

In one study US students from the US and Japanese students from Japan were asked to describe an animated underwater scene where one large fish is
swimming amongst a school of smaller fish. The American students had a tendency to only report the large fish and ignore all other small objects and

How Balancing Two Different Cultures
Balancing two different cultures is a thing that most people from immigrant and/or strong culturally, traditionally rooted families have come accustom
to. Over the years they have learned about things that they should or should not do when dealing with a certain culture. For instance, someone who
comes from a very conservative family doesn't wear revealing clothes, unless they are out with their friends and know that their family won't see them.
On contrast people, who don't have more than one culture might not understand why you cover up so much in front of your parents. There's a thing
that most people don't understand about people who deal with two different cultures. People with a split culture have to make their own mold, so to
say; they have to learn from their own and others experiences to conform to a certain norm. Since different cultures have different social norms, you
can't behave unacceptably without being judged. People, who have never dealt with diverse communities, especially don't understand why people act
differently when they're around unalike people. For example, my friends never understood why my parent didn't allow me to go to places in high
school such as football games, dances or even to my friends' houses. They didn't understand that my family was very conservative; however I don't
blame them for not knowing, since they haven't experienced any diversity by living in a predominantly white area.
