some form of breathing and other natural body functions. An example of a negative feedback mechanism is a Thermostat If the heat is turned on and
is set at 80 degrees the heat is turned on, If the temperature drops below 80 degrees, After the heater heats the house to 80 degrees, it shuts off keeping
the desired temperature. An example of a positive feedback system is when a baby is born. while the mother is in labor, a hormone is released that
boosts and quickens her contractions. The more contractions causes more of that Hormone to be let out and it continues to goes on until the

Homeostasis
Homeostasis works to maintain the organism's internal environment, where the body's processes are able to function at a level that would allow life to
continue in that organism. The three systems which are controlled by homeostasis are the respiratory, cardiovascular, and muscular systems.
Changes to the cardiovascular system are often a result of changes in the activities of other systems. The heart rate, the cardiac output and the blood
pressure change to different degrees of bodily activity. The heart rate slows and cardiac output falls when demands on bodily systems are less high.
However the opposite is true when demands on the bodily systems are high, the heart rate...show more content...
All systems must have homeostasis to maintain stability and to survive. Homeostasis is so important because it can allow an animal to adapt to a
changing environment. The body attempts to maintain a constant level of physical output to achieve homeostasis. However, it can only work within its
limits, where extreme conditions can disable the negative feedback mechanism.
In humans, the process is a little different. It involves a constant monitoring of lots of different factors. An example of one of the factors it monitors is
the gases oxygen and carbon dioxide. The concentrations of these substances in body fluid remain unchanged, despite changes in the external
environment.
The body can regulate its internal environment through feedback systems. A feedback system is a cycle of events in which the condition of the body is
monitored, changed, reâmonitored and reâevaluated. Each monitored variable such as temperature, blood glucose and blood pressure is termed as a
controlled condition. Any disruption that changes a controlled condition is called a stimulus. Only three components make up the feed back system â a
receptor, a control center and an effecter.
Receptor â is a body structure that monitors changes in a controlled condition and sends input in the form of nerve impulses to the control center

For the Conceptual Learning portion of my spring portfolio I selected my notes over Temperature Maintaining Homeostasis. To maintain homeostasis
within a human body the endocrine system, skin receptors detect a change in external environment change, and based on if the body temperature rises
or lowers. If the body temperature lowers the blood vessels dilate, resulting in heat loss to the environment and the sweat glands secrete fluid, as sweat
and when the the fluid evaporates heat is lost from the body into the environment and normal body temperature or homeostasis is maintained again. If
the body temperature lowers the blood vessels constrict to conserve heat, the sweat glands do not secrete fluid, shivering, the involuntary contraction of
muscles, generates heat to warm the body, once heat is retained then the body temperature is back to normal and homeostasis is maintained.
From this I learned the reasoning behind sweat and shivering, before learning about homeostasis my prior knowledge was, that you sweat when it is
hot outside and you shiver or curl up when your cold or it is cold outside.
This piece is important because it represent my learning of new concepts and understanding how everything is connected in one way or another. Skill(s)

Homeostasis is defined as a state of equilibrium in which our body's systems work together to create an internal balance. Our bodies aim to keep
everything at a constant condition or within a normal range. Homeostasis is required in all organisms in order for them to live. Homeostasis in our
bodies is possible because the human body has sensors called receptors that monitor everything from temperature to blood pressure. These receptors
look out for stimuli and sends the information found to control center or the brain. The control center then sends out signals to an effector which can
be a muscle or an organ that will bring the body back to its normal range. The human body reacts to different stimuli with negative and positive
feedback. Negative feedback works to reduce the effect of the stimuli while positive feedback increases the effect of the stimuli. In the process of
negative feedback, the body reduces the output or activity of an organ to bring it back to its normal range. Most homeostatic control mechanisms are
negative. Positive feedback is the opposite of negative feedback and makes the body more unstable than because of the enhancement of the stimuli.

The Circadian system plays the biggest role in the negative feedback loop and acts as an internal clock. It generates a pressure on the body for
sleep depending on how long it has been since the last sleep episode. The pressure is greater the longer a person has been awake and there is less
pressure the longer a person has been asleep. The pressure is a result of sleep regulating substances that build up in the cerebrospinal fluid while
awake. People generally sleep longer if they were awake for a long period of time to compensate for the sleep they had lost. The internal clock can be
affected by many external variables such as sunlight, nighttime, when meals are eaten, and the timing of other

Homeostasis is a simple term which holds a large significance in the functionality of the human body. This essay will discuss and define this term.
Explanation as to why homeostasis is important to be maintained and two examples of homeostasis relevant to its control mechanism will be stated in
this essay as well. The word homeostasis was first introduced by Walter B. Cannon, an American physiologist, to describe the body's ability to maintain
relative stability of its internal conditions even though there were constant changes in the surroundings outside. (Marieb & Hoehn, 2007). Thus,
homeostasis is utterly defined as "the condition of equilibrium in the body's internal environment due to the constant interaction of the body's many

The regulation of body temperature is one such mechanism to restore homeostasis. The human body temperature is controlled by the thermoregulatory
centre in the hypothalamus which is located in the middle of the brain. Inputs are received form two sets of thermoâreceptors. The first is the receptors
in the hypothalamus itself which monitors the temperature of blood passing through the brain â the core temperature, and the second is the receptors
in the skin which monitors external temperature. Both sets of the information are vital and are received alongside each other so that the appropriate
adjustments can be made by the body. The thermoregulatory center sends impulses to several different effectors so body temperature can be adjusted
swiftly. In the case of body temperature increasing (e.g. exercising or hot weather), the heat loss centre in the hypothalamus is triggered. The thermostat
in the hypothalamus activates cooling mechanisms. Output is send to the effectors such as the smooth muscles (arterioles in the skin), and the sweat
glands. Muscles relax causing vasodilatation â skin blood vessels dilate. Additional heat is carried from the core to the surface, where it is dissipated
by convection and radiation. That is why the skin has a reddish appearance to it. Glands secrete sweat onto surface of the skin, which later evaporates.
As water have a high latent heat of evaporation, meaning that extra energy is needed to aid the process of evaporation,

On the other hand, allostasis is different that regular homeostasis proposes maintenance of stability outside of the normal homeostatic range where an
organism must vary all the parameters of its physiological systems to match them appropriately to chronic demands (i.e., reset the system parameters to
a new set points). The main hormonal mediators of the stress response in this situation are cortisol and epinephrine (adrenaline). They have both
protective and damaging effects on the body. Allostasis implies that many, if not all, physiological functions are mobilized or suppresses as reflected in
a cascade of brainâorganism interactions overriding local regulation. In the short run, they are essential for adaption, maintenance of homeostasis,

role of the hypothalamus in homeostasis is to stimulate and change many of the body's important processes, which include: heart rate, blood pressure,
body temperature, water and glucose content in the blood. Thermoregulation is the process which allows for the body to maintain its internal core

Analyze and define internal and external respiration in terms of physiology and anatomy.
External respiration is the transfer of gases between the respiratory organs. This includes the transfer between the lungs and environment. It occurs

External respiration refers to the procedure of inhaling oxygen into the lungs and releasing carbon dioxide from the lungs into the air. The exchange
process of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs at the same time. External respiration is a physical procedure that happens when oxygen is taken up by
capillaries of the lung and alveoli where carbon dioxide is expelled from the blood (MedâHealth, 2016).
Internal respiration is recognized as a metabolic procedure in which oxygen is being released to living cells or tissues while carbon dioxide is being
absorbed by the blood. Once the oxygen is inside the cell it is used for energy as ATP or adenosine triphosphate (Med

11. Explain The Homeostasis Of Glucose In Humans
In this report I will explain the Homeostasis of Glucose in humans. Glucose is the sugar in a human's blood, hence it is most commonly referred to as
'blood sugar'. Humans need to maintain stable blood glucose levels to stay healthy, as if blood sugar levels rise too high, it can cause serious and
possibly life threatening illness. Abnormal blood sugar levels can lead to serious short term problems like hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or diabetic
ketoacidosis. The purpose of blood glucose homeostasis is to maintain an effective and safe level of blood glucose in the body, despite any internal or
external factors that may change â Blood glucose in the body is the main energy source, and is used by most cells in the body, this energy powers many

So what is a negative feedback system? This is a process that senses changes in the body, and activates mechanisms that reverse the changes that occur
due to external factors, with its aim to restore conditions back to normal levels as quickly as it can. Negative feedback systems are crucial in
Homeostasis of Glucose levels in the human body to enable the maintenance of constant internal body conditions. Disruptions to homeostasis can be
potentially lifeâthreatening. Constant blood glucose levels are essential to keeping cells and the body and its functions healthy.
So what can affect Glucose levels in the human body? Things that can increase blood glucose levels are glucose absorbed through the small intestine
(eating), and the production of new glucose molecules from liver cells. Things that decrease blood glucose levels are the transport of glucose to cells
(energy used or stored) and the loss of glucose in urine (this happens in people with

Homeostasis is the human body's maintenance of stable, constant internal conditions. To achieve this equilibrium consistently in various environmental
circumstances, internal and external factors are monitored and altered as the body requires. Different types of receptors are responsible for detecting
specific environmental stimuli. For example Chemoreceptors detect changes in chemical concentrations within the blood (eg. Carbon Dioxide (CO2),
pH and Oxygen (O2)) and Mechanoreceptors detect sound, touch and pressure. The nervous system and the endocrine (hormonal) system both act as
regulatory pathways, linked primarily by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. They are used by the body to communicate disturbances in

This is done by glands, such as the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid, as well as organs such as the pancreas, kidneys and reproductive systems. It is this
system that is primarily responsible for the fluctuation of blood glucose. The main two hormones which effect its regulatory are insulin, produced from
ĐĐ (beta) cells and glucagon, produced from ĐÂą (alpha) cells in the pancreas.
3)
As can been seen in the diagram above, Insulin acts as an extracellular signalling molecule, attaching itself to receptors on the membrane of cells.
This communicates a signal which triggers receptor proteins, Gluts, to allow the transfusion of glucose through the plasma membrane. This process
causes a steady drop in blood glucose concentration and gives cells the necessary energy to function. Glucagon acts as a hormone which can raise
the blood glucose level by stimulating the conversion of glycogen into glucose as seen in the equation below. Glycogen is stored in the liver as an
energy storage polysaccharide, however it must by broken down into glucose, as a monosaccharide, before it can become usable. Glucagon and
insulin act as increase/ decrease effectors of a feedback system in order to maintain glucose concentration in the blood between about 80 and 130 mg/dl.
When glucose concentration is below the equilibrium, the drop is detected the pancreas. Low blood sugar is called hypoglycemia (hypo meaning low).
Glucagon is then released by pancreatic alpha

: Homeostasis of the body or the existence of a stable internal environment inside of an organism is essential to life. Organisms maintain certain levels
internally to sustain life, and oftenâoutside factors can cause these levels to change in a manner not intended. Thus the body responds to the new
stresses of the environment with autoâ regulation, and extrinsic regulation through the use of positive and negative feedback loops in the body. In
particular exercise evokes different reactions as the body undergoes stresses. In the experiment performed, the test subject was required to undergo
changes in order to maintain optimal homeostatic conditions. In this experiment, skin color, perspiration level, body temperature, breathing rate, and

These findings all are because of the bodies ability to use negative and positive feed back loops to maintain homeostasis. The skin color began to take
a pinkish shade as the exercise increased went on because the blood vessels in the body began to dilates in an effort to increase blood flow to the
surface in an effort to move the heat in the body towards the surface to cool the rising core temperatures by evaporating the heat off the body. If the
body got to a hot enough temperature, the specimen would have began to perspire to move heat to cool the body core temperature by opening the
sweat glands up, but the specimen did not work hard enough for that point to be reached. The reason the body temperature rises is because the energy
used for your muscles is mostly lost to heat, and the rest goes towards the actual activity at hand, eventually the core temperature is lowered by
different cooling methods. The breathing rate increased because the body needed to increase the level of oxygen coming into the body to increase the
amount of oxygenated blood that can be pumped to the cells packed with extra nutrients for the muscles, as well as to get rid of carbon dioxide out of

In the human body, many mechanisms work together to maintain water balance. The mechanisms within the body allow changes that aid in supporting
the psychological and physical functioning of different cells. This process is crucial to the survival of the person and species. By definition,
homeostasis is the process that maintains the stability of the human body's internal environment in response to changes in external conditions (Karen

responsible for breaking down and absorbing substances that are toxic and sustaining carbohydrate metabolism. The hypothalamus (located in the
central brain) controls the body temperature, sleep, hunger and thirst of a human or species and the kidneys control regular blood water levels,

Introduction
My investigation is about Homeostasis. Homeostasis is maintaining a physiological system in a higher animal to maintain coâordinated responses. It
tries to maintain the environmental changes, and a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment. Homeostasis is the process of
keeping everything constant. The higher animal I have chosen is Humans. The reason why I have chosen Humans is because there are so many
homeostatic mechanisms available for this higher animal. Homeostatic mechanisms are important because it maintains your core body temperature so
the enzymes within the body are able to run at an optimum level. "(pers comm [Nicole Mitchell], 2016) If an enzyme get too cold the process of
bonding with proteins will slow until they are unable to bond, if an enzyme is too hot it will deânature meaning its shape will change and be unable to
bond with proteins, both being too cold and too hot will kill the host as organs are unable to function without proteins". It regulates the body
temperature so you don't heat up too much. A negative feedback loop is important because it allows the mechanism to stop, so you don't die. The
mechanism I have chosen to do for my investigation are thermoregulation (temperature) and blood pressure. A human is an Endotherm (warmâblooded).
Endotherm is an organism which generates heat to maintain its body temperature and

Homeostasis Homeostasis is defined as the maintenance of a constant internal environment. This is very important for organisms because:
ĐâĐ¡ Chemical reactions can take place at predictable rates.
ĐâĐ¡ Mechanisms are more efficient as optimum conditions can be maintained for enzymes, etc.
ĐâĐ¡ Organisms can acquire a degree of independence from the environment. They need not be limited to one geological location where the conditions
fit their needs, but can spread out. Their activity is also not restricted to a certain time, season, etc.
Principles of Homeostasis:
All homeostasis mechanisms follow approximately the same steps....show more content...
Fat Metabolism:
* Lipids entering the liver may either be broken down or modified for transport to storage areas elsewhere in the body.
* Excess cholesterol in the blood is excreted into the bile by the liver, which conversely can synthesize cholesterol when that absorbed by the intestines
is inadequate for the body's need.
Breakdown of Erythrocytes:
* The liver breaks down red blood cells at the end of their 120âday life span.
* The Kupffer cells lining the sinusoids carry out this breakdown, producing the bile pigment bilirubin which is excreted in the bile.
* Iron from red blood cells is either stored in the liver or used in the formation of new blood cells by the bone marrow.
19. Detoxification:
* The liver renders harmless or removes toxic materials absorbed by the intestines.
* Kupffer cells ingest foreign organisms or material, while toxic chemicals (e.g. alcohol, nicotine) are made safe by chemical conversions within

Deamination of Amino Acids:
ĐâĐ¡ The liver breaks down any surplus amino acids because the body is unable to store them as such.

This means when blood glucose levels rise above the optimum level, the organ's cells can't absorb the glucose into the cells, and the liver can't
convert it into glycogen to store, like it usually would if insulin were present. (5) Type 2 diabetes is when the body doesn't recognize the insulin and
therefore cannot spread the glucose out of the blood to the rest of the body's organs. As a result of the high levels of glucose, the pancreas (The

22. How Homeostasis Is Important For Your Life
Homeostasis
The term I would like to introduce today is Homeostasis. This term is used in psychology and means having balanced body or life. A simpler
definition to keep things constant, or in a balanced flow. This could be an organ in the body, your mind, or simply the area of your life. It is important
for us to know what homeostasis is because, we all need balance in our lives. Psychology today says "Homeostasis is critical to survival. If our bodies
do not maintain themselves within certain tolerances (temperature being one example) we cannot function. Growing through creative change is also
critical. If we cannot adapt to shifts in our environment (changing food sources being one example) we cannot function either." (psychologytoday)
Homeostasis can have many different applications in everyday life. It can mean keeping the body in balance, in regards to weight, health etc. It can
mean keeping the mind in balance, not sinking into a depression, not succumbing to harmful addictions, or not caving under everyday stress. I feel
this term is very important, because developing balance, or homeostasis in my life was one of the main ways I battled and won depression. I plan on
entering the field of counseling psychology, because of this I want to learn more about homeostasis.
First I would like to start out with clarifying the different kinds of homeostasis in greater detail.
Homeostasis is the term used to describe a body or system in balance, but one of the process the
