- June 29, 2005 Main Message: The Panasas ActiveScale Parallel atorage architecture solves the I/O bottleneck created by cluster computing. Let’s look at how data flows in parallel to the cluster. In order for this to work, we have designed a protocol called DirectFLOW. Before starting, all cluster nodes are empowered with a small installable file system We call the file system the DirectFLOW client It enables direct communication between clients and StorageBlades When there is a request for data from the cluster, First, the DirectFLOW client makes a request to the DirectorBlade to get and/or store data files DirectorBlade authenticates the user and request, then obtains the latest map of all applicable objects across the StorageBlades and sends a virtual copy of the map to the client. DirectorBlades provide authorization to access data and a map of where the data is Data is then accessed directly and in parallel from the Object Storage Devices, that is, the StorageBlades Data does not have to flow through the DirectorBlades. The beauty of the Panasas system is that it provides customers ultimate flexibility in determining how they would like to access data. If you are interested in zero alterations to the existing infrastructure, then you are free to use the in-band NFS/CIFS solution. If performance is critical, the DirectFLOW solution provides record setting performance. And if you, like many customers, have diverse needs, you can institute both NFS/CIFS and DirectFLOW solutions into a single pool of storage for easy management. That means that a single file can be access in the system by all three protocols! Panasas is the ONLY company to offer DirectFLOW and this level of customer flexibility in terms of performance.
