The good health and quality of services offered to our fellow
residents of this great Routt County is vital to the goals of the Landon
Morley Sawyer Foundation.
The LMS Foundation has labored vigorously throughout the past six
years to bring about positive change affecting the health and services
available to youth involved in snowsports in America.
Over the past year, the LMS Foundation has centered itself in Routt
County and has focused it’s attention on implementing substantial
programs and services specifically to the city and outlying areas of
Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
In alignment with the LMS Foundation’s goals of broadening and
strengthening its existing, effective programs to more of Routt County,
the LMS Foundation is proud to apply for assistance from the United Way
in the form of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant.
The LMS Foundation intends to use the generosity of Arthur E.
Anderson to make significant, measurable and substantial improvements
to the lives and futures of Routt County residents.
We are excited about the opportunity of being an instrument
through which the philanthropic efforts of the United Way can be most
effective.
We are confident that the following proposed use of the Arthur E.

M i s s i o n
The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation is dedicated to promoting safety and superior
support for snowsports athletes.
Established in 2002, the LMS Foundation has endeavored over the last six years to
provide programs to effectively improve the safe training conditions and to offer services to
educate snowsport youth participants regarding health, substance abuse and life skills.
Having worked with and supported the Lowell Whiteman School since 2005 and
establishing its headquarters in Steamboat Springs, CO in 2007, the LMS Foundation has
broadened its immediate mission to including the entire community in its endeavors. The LMS
Foundation now uses its programs and services directed towards competitive snowsports
athletes to reach other demographics; particularly the youth and parents of Routt County.
The LMS Foundation is pleased to use its experience providing for the needs of the
snowsports world to endeavor to include those youth and families who may not have access
to the programs associated with snowsports. Because the pursuit of snowsports is oftentimes
an exclusive and financially restrictive activity, the LMS Foundation sees a great potential to
include those less fortunate in the same constructive activities associated with training for
skiing and snowboarding.
Because of the great history and recognition the community of Steamboat Springs, CO
has established based upon excellence in competitive snowsports, the LMS Foundation sees a
great need to include the benefits and opportunities associate with success in snowsports
with all of the communities in Routt County.
To date, all of the programs, services, scholarships, and activities provided by the LMS
Foundation have come from internal endowments. Based on the well established history of
the foundation, and the resulting confidence for longevity and effectiveness in the future, the
LMS Foundation is now excited to venture towards participating with other organizations to
maximize the breadth and effectiveness of its endeavors.

INTRODUCTION
The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation has a wonderful
individual to exist in memory of. Our efforts and
endeavors are patterned after the ideals and attitude of a
tremendous individual, Landon Sawyer.
There are some legacies left in life that seem
unfinished. Some paths destined for greatness are cut
short of fruition.
It may often seem these tragedies linger only to
be mourned. In this all-to-short existence we share,
those gleams of greatness are too often grieved for
instead of celebrated.
Landon loved skiing. It was an integral
interweaving in the fabric of his being. Unlike most
impassioned skiers, Landon didn’t grow up around the
sport. It wasn’t a part of the daily routine that many
skiers are raised near. His family were not skiers; he
wasn’t raised in a ski town, it wasn’t something he was
automatically presented with. Landon sought out skiing
on his own, as an adolescent, unexpectedly.
Skiing was a part of Landon. So much that he left family and friends to attend the Lowell Whiteman
School in Steamboat Springs to be closer to it. However, it wasn’t the competition in skiing or the insatiable
drive to win. It was the camaraderie, being on the mountain, the sublime nature of the winter elements and
the allure of the adventure. Landon was zealous about skiing and it emanated from him. With Landon in a
room, whether putting on ski boots or reminiscing of the day’s adventured, everyone felt like friends. It was
impossible knowing Landon and not instantly being friends.
Landon’s spirit of excitement and joviality was infectious. His inherent nature infused those around
him with hope and delight. His good-natured and mischievous sense of humor made laughter contagious.
Due to his innate benevolentness, it was habitual to be around Landon and smile.
This foundation exists both because of Landon’s fervent love of skiing and because of the way Landon
impacted others. This foundation also exists due to the abrupt and tragic death that stole Landon brightness
away from us.
Landon’s last moments were spent doing what he loved. Skiing with his friends and teammates
following a ski competition. Though the circumstances surrounding the accident that took Landon’s life may
have been unavoidable, it is possible that if different measures were in place, he may still be here today.
Landon’s death has had all kinds of repercussion and devastated friends and families. This foundation
stands as a beacon of hope and support to ensure that those measures that may make a difference between
life and death in snowsports are acknowledged and taken.
Out of the ashes of the tragic loss of Landon has come the positive development of the creation of this
foundation that bears his name. At the core of its purpose, the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation stands
proudly to help prevent the loss of others like Landon.

NEED ASSESSMENT
There exist innumerable, negative consequences of the many needs to fill for Rout
County. Problems ranging from substance abuse to the health risks posed by physical
inactivity create perpetual challenges for human services to abate.
The most hanious risk we face is recitivism and continuation of the problems by not
identifying and addressing the specific needs causing the dilemmas.
It is clear that the most prevalent problems facing Routt County are:
• A lack of facilities to provide free, fun, exciting and different after-school or evening
activities to all of the county’s youth.
• Candid, open dialogs about substance use and abuse targeted specifically to Routt
County, and presented by medical experts.
• Easy access to information about physical fitness and resources regarding staying
healthy in Routt county.
The most productive approach to solve these problems is to provide the tools and resources
to Routt County individuals to succeed for themselves.
This methodology not only creates viable solutions; but more importantly, empowers the
individual so they themselves become instruments of positive change to those around them.
These problems can be mitigated by designating the 2008 Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant
for the enactment of the Lanon Morley Sawyer Foundation’s program to expand its three
most impactful programs for all of Routt County.

NEED ASSESSMENT
Our greatest resources is our youth. Providing for the strong and sustained future of
Routt County means investing in the future of Routt County: the youth.
However, the youth of Routt County face a myriad of potential pitfalls lying in wait to rob
them of their potential for happy, successful lives. Drug and alcohol use, apathy and the health
problems caused by inactivity are all major problems that all of Routt County faces as a result
of being a rural area.
These problems have a direct correlation to a lack of constructive activities outside of
school time.
The over arching, vital need for after-school activities is especially true in Routt County.
The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation proposes a two step approach to aid in filling
the need of after-school activities:
• The first step is supplying a facility that will be enticing enough to encourage
attendance while being able to accommodate Routt County youth and allow them to
engage in physical activities .
• The second is to provide constructive, accessible, physical activities that are both fun
and that the youth of Routt County want to participate in.
The final need is cost. The Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will allow the LMS
Foundation to provide these activities and the aforementioned facility to Routt County youth
for free. By ensuring they have access to excellent facilities with specific activities that are as
alluring as negative choices, together we can provide the structure that will lead to the success
of our youth.
“After-school hours are a critical time for youth. That
time can represent either an opportunity to learn and
grow, through quality after-school programs, or a time of
risk to youth's health and safety.
The after-school hours are the peak time for
juvenile crime and risky behaviors such as alcohol
and drug use. Most experts agree that after-school
programs offer a healthy and positive alternative.
These programs keep kids safe, improve academic
achievement and help relieve the stresses on
today's working families.”
From The National Youth Violence
Prevention Resource Center:
“There is a real need in Routt County of
affordable and accessible after-school activities ...
There is a big chunk of our youth in our community
that don’t have a place to go or things to do. In the
rural areas, especially in South Routt and Hayden,
there are limited options.”
In a July 1st, 2007 Steamboat Pilot
Article, Colleen Lyon, Routt
County director for Grand Futures
Prevention Coalition, stresses this
reality:

NEED ASSESSMENT
NEED ASSESSMENT: Substance Ignorance
The misuse and abuse of pharmaceutical and elicit drugs along with alcohol is, and will
continue to remain a serious problem in Routt County.
Ignorance is currently the greatest need to fill in order to combat the abuse of
substances. The need to continue to effectively educate individuals and groups regarding
what these substances are and their actual impact on human health is imperative.
Many programs have made attempts at educating both the youth and adults regarding
drug and alcohol abuse. While some methods have been effective, others have failed.
The most important need is not deciding whether one method was more effective than
another. Instead, it is continuing a barrage of new education and information.
There will always be a need regarding ignorance, confusion and misunderstanding
regarding substances. The most effective way to address that need now is to provide
open, candid discussions directly to the people of Routt County from medical experts.
The Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will allow the LMS Foundation to extend its
already successful “Substance Use” seminar and round-table discussions (from the
“Architecture for a New World”Speaker Seminar Series) to all of Routt County.
“There are feasible solutions to substance abuse in
rural areas. Since access to treatment services is a
fundamental hurdle to addressing substance abuse in
rural areas ... alternative methods of providing
education and counseling are relevant”
From the 2002 report, Substance
Abuse - Trends in Rural Areas by
Linnae Hutchison and Craig
Blakely:
“The National Association of Counties says [drug use] is
the biggest problem facing local authorities... [drug]
addiction is rampant in rural areas...
... the biggest danger may be ignorance.”
In a December 21st, 2007
Independent News and Media
article, Andrew Buncombe, reports
the most recent data regarding rural
areas:
“A meta-analysis of 143 adolescent drug prevention
programs ... indicated that peer education
programs had positive health outcomes in 5 distinct
areas:
• knowledge • attitudes • drug use • skills and
behavior”
From his presentation from the
2001 2nd International Drugs and
Young People Conference, A.
Bleeker reports :
“The abuse of prescription drugs has increased
sharply since the mid-1990s ...data indicate[s] that
rates of abuse for prescription narcotics ... and
codeine have increased sharply over the past
decade.

NEED ASSESSMENT
NEED ASSESSMENT: Access to Information
NEED ASSESSMENT: Summation
Sustainability is the final need addressed by the LMS Foundation’s program to improve
the health and human services of Routt County.
Once Routt County individuals have participated in either the physical activities offered
by free access to the LMS Training Center, or have been a part of seminars or discussions
regarding substances, there is a great need to continue to provide access to those experiences
and education.
Continuing education is vital to sustaining any initiated purpose. The same is true for
Routt County. There is a need for an easily accessible, user-friendly source of information to
maintain and perpetuate the positive outcomes caused by the LMS Foundation’s Arthur E.
Anderson Impact Grant program.
There is a need for an aesthetically-pleasing, intuitive, web-based reference system.
The need of sustainability is satisfied by immediate and simple access to information. This final
solution provides access to Routt County specific health and exercise information and
suggestions, training/health tips from experts. In addition, cataloged and downloadable
reference materials from the“Substance Use”programs to review and share with others.
By addressing and filling the three Routt County needs of (1) after-school youth
activities/facilities, (2) seminars and open discussions about substances from experts and (3)
sustainability through access to information, the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will have
substantial positive impact on the health and human services of Routt County.

GOALS&OBJECTIVES
PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Overview
The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation is pleased to be able to provide effective
programs and services to the specific group of youth snowsports participants. However, it is
unfortunate that our current target is so defined in number, and does not reach the entire
community.
The LMS Foundation’s main goal with regard to using the Arthur E. Anderson
Impact Grant is to provide access to the these established programs and services by all
the youth and families throughout the entirety of Routt County as well as expand them
for enhanced effectiveness.
With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant it would be possible to accomplish the
following objectives :
• Combat the lack of safe and constructive after-school activities through the
availability of the LMS Training Center.
• Encourage healthy exercise routines and programs by Routt County youth
utilizing the LMS Training Center.
• Help stem substance abuse by provide free information regarding prescription and
elicit drug and alcohol abuse throughout Routt County through the LMS Foundation
Speaker Seminar Series.
• Establish a central location to gain accessible, complete specialized and
innovative information regarding health, training, exercise, drug abuse, treatment
possibilities and modalities, as well as other resources.
The over-arching goals of implementing the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant are:
(1) To promote the health and development of Routt County Youth by providing
free access to the LMS Foundation Steamboat Springs Training Center.
(2) Expand the services of the existing LMS Foundation“Architecture for a New
World” speaker seminar series from the confines of Steamboat Springs to schools,
educators, community workers, doctors, health clinics, and residents throughout Routt
County.
(3) Building an addition to the LMS Foundation website, www.landosmojo.org, to
house easy-to-access resources for Routt County residents.

GOALS&OBJECTIVES
PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Activities/Facilities
When the LMS Foundation moved its headquarters to Steamboat Springs in 2007, it was
presented with a request to fill an immediate need for the community: a training center. Over
the last seven months the LMS Foundation - in partnership with the Steamboat Springs Winter
Sports Club - has donated the financial means necessary to help the SSWSC turn a simple
warehouse into a world-class training center.
At the present time, admittance to use the training center is restricted to
individuals with a U.S.S.A. (United States Ski and Snowboard Association) licence.
Furthermore, due to the high costs of maintaining the facility, individuals not associated
with the SSWSC must pay a $15.00 entry fee. The LMS Foundation would like to
designate a significant portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards Routt County
youth, especially those“at risk”, being able to use the LMS Training Center for free.
The following objectives are accomplished through the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant making
it possible for Routt County youth to utilize the LMS Training center for free :
• Provide accessible, safe and constructive“after-school”& evening times for Routt
County youth to participate in fun, physical activities in a top-notch facility.
• Educate Routt County youth regarding physical fitness, setting and achieving goals,
and the possibilities of athletic endeavors.
• Interaction of“at risk”Routt County youth with positive role models in the form of
SSWSC coaches/staff during“Open Nights”.
The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards“after-school”activities:
(1) Making possible weekly“Routt County Youth Open Nights”at the LMS Training Center:
º All Routt County youth with a USSA licence can attend the“Open Nights”.
(2) To supply, by application, USSA Licenses (which are required to use the training center)
to needy Routt County youth who could otherwise not afford a licence :
º A total of 160 licences would be available by application.
º Application approval process would be based upon financial need, earnest
desire to use the facility and potential of being“at risk”.
º Time Spent reviewing and making decisions regarding acceptance of the
applications will be donated by LMS Foundation personnel.
(3) To provide trained, licensed and certified SSWSC coaches/staff to instruct during open
nights and for additional costs associated with keeping the training center open for“Open
Night”sessions.
GOALSOBJECTIVES
A strong component of the LMS Foundation’s philanthropic endeavors is the creation
and implementation of its “Architecture for a New World” speaker seminar series. So far, the
LMS Foundation has provided one substantial seminar to the community of Steamboat
Springs. The speakers were internationally renown doctors who specialize in the chemical
makeup and treatment modalities of both prescription and elicit drugs. Through this one
seminar, the speakers were able to meet with and educate the Routt County Sheriffs Dept.,the
staff of the Steamboat Springs Middle School and provided a free seminar to the community.
The response was overwhelming: many requests were made for additional presentations,
information and access to the topics discussed.
A portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will go towards providing more
of the same and related topics to educate all of Routt County.
The following objectives are accomplished through the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant making
it possible for the expansion of health seminars throughout Routt County :
• Reduction in drug use, and violent crime as a result of candid discussions and
education about the real impact of substances.
• Awareness of the truth regarding the substances we all deal with every day.
• Stimulation of discussions about these topics between parents and youth.
• Reduce prescription and elicit drug and alcohol abuse in Routt County.
The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards expanding on the LMS Foundation’s
Educational Speaker Series:
(1) Bringing in medical experts to have candid and thorough discussions regarding
prescription and street drug abuse, treatments modalities, physical effects of substances and
how to deal with the topics to the following venues:
º Routt County schools via assemblies.
º Routt County general populous via community events.
º Routt County educators and school staff via private discussions.
º Routt County law enforcement officials via private discussions.
º Routt County health clinics and doctors via private discussions.
(2) To supply reference literature regarding the topics specific to Routt County.
º Time required to compile materials donated by LMS Foundation staff.
(3) Informing Routt County community members regarding the speakers and topics.
(4) Securing low cost venues for general session and/or providing minimal snacks and/or
soft drinks/coffee at the events.

GOALSOBJECTIVES
With the designation of funds from the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant towards creating an
informative section of the LMS Foundation website, it would be possible to accomplish the
following objectives :
• Provide specific heath related information tailored to Routt County regarding
illegal and prescription drug use and abuse, methods and tools to deal with substances,
complete educational resources pertaining to substances, information and instructions about
seeking treatment , etc.
• Create and maintain a user-friendly and fun-to-use database regarding exercise,
nutrition, examples of constructive outdoor activities, fitness ideas/information and a wealth
of data from coaches, trainers, and athletes** associated with the foundation about improving
quality of life through physical activities.
• Provide detailed information regarding“Open Nights”at the LMS Training Center
made possible by the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant. Website will contain detailed
information regarding the application for a U.S.S.A. licence,“Open Night”schedule times and
other important information.
The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards accessible learning tools:
(1) Building an addition to the LMS Foundation website, www.landosmojo.org, for the
purpose of providing information regarding:
º Health and substance abuse topics specific to Routt County resulting the LMS
Foundation’s access to the nation’s leading Ph.D.s, M.D.’s and Medical Companies.
º Webcasts of the Speaker Seminar Series and downloadable additional resources
and topics from the seminars.
º Information on the LMS Foundation training center and its accessibility to Routt
County Residents.

GOALS&OBJECTIVES
PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Inform/Sustain
The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation website is currently a place for individuals to
find information regarding the foundation’s mission and history. Currently, the LMS
Foundation does not have within its budget, funds necessary to expand the website to include
access to interactive information about its programs and services.
Information is one of the most valuable tools in supporting the heath of
individuals and assisting them in accessing beneficial services. It is vital that residents
of Routt County are aware of the programs available to them through the LMS
Foundation. A portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will go towards building
a new component of the LMS Foundation website.
Page: 13
THE LANDON MORLEY SAWYER TRAINING CENTER
After making a $25,000 donation to the SSWSC, a
world-class trampoline and exercise training center has
emerged.
The center contains two (2) Olympic quality
fly-bed trampolines, wooden safety decking, a complete
custom-pad system, safety harnesses and a
workout/exercise area.
This great facility is currently only being
advertised as available to SSWSC athletes and
individuals with a U.S.S.A. licence.
Maintaining such an exclusive ‘guest list’ for this
center is a travesty. The LMS Foundation recognizes that
this separation is unhealthy and should be remedied.
It is possible to make it available to everyone. With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact
Grant the training center can be made available to all of Routt County youth.
This facility stands to diminish the problems caused by the lack of after-school activities.
However, for most everyone in Routt County, the most significant hurdle in using this facility is cost.
The cost for an individual to enter the facility, maintaining the facility, staffing qualified
coaches/monitors and insurance.
The liability risk associated with such a facility in this day and age is enormous. The insurance
question is therefore a difficult one to solve. This debacle is accomplished and insurance for
individuals to use the facility is achieved through the United States Ski and Snowboard Association
(U.S.S.A.). Purchasing a U.S.S.A. licence enables anyone to use the facility.
Anyone can purchase a U.S.S.A. licence. However, for many Routt County individuals, even the
least expensive, 1 year, $50 youth U.S.S.A. licence is too expensive. It is these individuals who are most
often in the most need of an opportunity like using the LMS Training Center.
With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant, 160 U.S.S.A. licences will be available
through a need-based application process to Routt County youth. In addition, one evening per week
for an entire year will be designated as “Open Nights”. Any Routt County individual with U.S.S.A.
licence will be able to participate in the facility for free, instead of paying the $15.00 cost.
Finally, the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will make it possible to keep the facility open and
running those additional evenings as well as have a trained SSWSC staff member overseeing,
instructing and mentoring the Routt County participants.
Making the LMS Training Center available to all of Routt County is a fabulous improvement to
the health of Routt County. Not only are exercise and activity promoted, but unity, diversity and goal
setting are accomplished. This provides significant improvement to the needs left by apathy,
boredom, inactivity and a lack of after-school activities and facilities.

Architecture for a New World Speaker Seminar Series
In an effort to provide education on a variety of important subjects to
young minds in the ski community, the LMS Foundation created the
“Architecture for a New World” Speaker Seminar Series in the summer of
2007.
In collaboration with the Lowell Whiteman School, the first seminar
was conducted in Steamboat Springs in January, 2008. The topic,
“Substance Use”, involved a candid discussion regarding the basic chemical
makeup and subsequent effects on the human body of pharmaceutical
drugs, elicit drugs and alcohol.
The speakers brought in for the event are internationally renown experts in the fields of
chemistry, biochemistry, substance addiction and treatment modalities.
A two stage approach was taken to deliver the message to the Steamboat Springs community:
a large seminar-format lecture in an auditorium setting and small, round-table discussions with
specific groups.
The response from the event was overwhelming. Particularly from public servants of the
community. Two round-table discussion events that were especially encouraging were a discussion
with the Steamboat Springs Middle School nurses and teachers and a dialog with the Routt County
Sheriffs Department.
It was made clear that specific, candid discussions from experts regarding the true nature of
the substances surrounding us and their impact is a definite need in Routt County. Many comments
were made requesting more information, reference materials regarding the expert’s presentations
and additional sessions.
From the success of the initial endeavor to the Steamboat Springs community, it will provide a
much needed human service to expand the “Substance Use” seminar from the LMS Foundation’s
“Architecture for a New World”Speaker Seminar Series for the benefit of the health of all Routt County.

The primary aspect of the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundations’ s aspirations is to promote
safety and provide supirior support for snowsports athletes. The purpose of the LMS Foundation with
regard to this objective is threefold: to educate, empower and enrich the lives of snowsports athletes.
The maturation of our
youth is not an issue to be
taken lightly.
Activities, events and
competitive arenas must be
structured in such a way as to
provide the upcoming
generation with the inspira-
tion to strive towards better-
ment.
It takes more than simply running
through a specific set of motions to be
successful.
A complete, varied understanding
is necessary to both properly instruct
others as well as endeavor towards one’s
own goals.
Greatness in athletics does not
equate to a fulfilling existence.
Pursuance of more powerful
presence to flourish in life, does.

Architecture for a New World Speaker Seminar Series
How we can build for everyone's future
A gathering of interesting, engaging people from varied aspects of life
contributing towards the idea of how to live together as humans, conscious entities and
components of a living earth more purposefully.
Goals:
- Promoting the adult in the child and the child in the adult.
- Education is paramount.
- Stressing the importance of learning and knowledge.
- Putting athletics and other endeavors in their proper perspective:
[success in sports is not the end, but rather should be a means to incorporate
towards accomplishing a greater end.]
- Helping "youngsters, parents, coaches..." maximize their experiences together. -
- Promoting ways for youth to "make it in life" without loosing their sense of self,
purpose and soul.
- Integrating what youth do in sports and other activities to important components
of life.
Supporting Snowsport Competition
Without a venue to showcase talent and challenge one’s self, there exists the risk of
giving up, not following through and not striving for one’s best. Snowsports
competitions are too often underfunded and athletes left abandoned.
Goals:
- Infusing energy and excitement into achievement based events.
- Promoting strong work ethics, team work and persistence.
- Perpetuate an attitude of accomplishment at competitions instead of commercialism.
- Make it possible for athletes to remain competitive without sacrificing their integrity.

- Stimulating coaches education
- Establishing a helmet scholarship program to encourage the constant use of helmets.
- Providing inspiration to athletes to encourage them to pursue their best and prevent
burnout.

APPENDICES
Appendices - References Cited

The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation has turned the loss of an
outstanding freestyle skier, Landon Sawyer, into a win for today’s
snowsports competitors and, effectively, for all skiers. The foundation’s
funding goes towards educating, training, and inspiring young athletes to
safely purse their aspirations. These elite and highly-visible competitors,
who have been positively influenced by LMS’ programs, then set an
example that millions of regular skiers observe and follow. The Steamboat
Springs Winter Sports Club tips its hat to the LMS foundation and we
appreciate the positive results that come from its funding investment in
skiing.
---Rick DeVos,
Executive Director, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club
“The Steamboat Ski Resort is aligned with the Landon Morely Sawyer
foundation because it brings to life, in very practical terms, one of our
main goals and objectives: skier safety. LMS creates a ripple effect that
looks like this: the foundation supports and educates elite skiers on safety;
these highly-visible elite skiers practice safety by doing things like
wearing helmets in magazines and on the hill; the general ski populace,
and kids specifically, watch and emulate the elite skiers and, BINGO, we
see safer skiing throughout the sport.”
---Mike Lane, Public Relations Director,
Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp
Companies in and out of the ski industry should be fully on-board with the
Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation’s investment in promoting safe skiing.
The foundation accomplishes this ambitious goal by funding educational
and training programs for elite young competitors. These programs teach
athletes that ‘hucking’ their bodies off cliffs for fame and fortune does not
equal a long and healthy skiing career or productivity over a lifetime.
Regular skiers watch and learn from these elite competitors who appear in
the media. Non-competing skiers undoubtedly hear these athletes talking
the importance of intelligent training as critical safety preparation for their
huge aerial tricks in the terrain park. In this way, ‘Joe-skier’ is influenced
to ski both more safely and smarter. By changing the behavior of
spotlighted athletes, the LMS foundation’s funding produces an increase
in safety among skiers of all ages and abilities.

of Sales & Marketing, Intrawest.

  • 3. Page: 02 The good health and quality of services offered to our fellow residents of this great Routt County is vital to the goals of the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation. The LMS Foundation has labored vigorously throughout the past six years to bring about positive change affecting the health and services available to youth involved in snowsports in America. Over the past year, the LMS Foundation has centered itself in Routt County and has focused it’s attention on implementing substantial programs and services specifically to the city and outlying areas of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. In alignment with the LMS Foundation’s goals of broadening and strengthening its existing, effective programs to more of Routt County, the LMS Foundation is proud to apply for assistance from the United Way in the form of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant. The LMS Foundation intends to use the generosity of Arthur E. Anderson to make significant, measurable and substantial improvements to the lives and futures of Routt County residents. We are excited about the opportunity of being an instrument through which the philanthropic efforts of the United Way can be most effective. We are confident that the following proposed use of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant funds will provide the greatest improvement to the health and human services of Routt County. The LMS Foundation appreciates your time and consideration. Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [I] : (1.) INTRODUCTION Executive Summary
  • 4. Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part (I) : (2.) INTRODUCTION M i s s i o n The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation is dedicated to promoting safety and superior support for snowsports athletes. Established in 2002, the LMS Foundation has endeavored over the last six years to provide programs to effectively improve the safe training conditions and to offer services to educate snowsport youth participants regarding health, substance abuse and life skills. Having worked with and supported the Lowell Whiteman School since 2005 and establishing its headquarters in Steamboat Springs, CO in 2007, the LMS Foundation has broadened its immediate mission to including the entire community in its endeavors. The LMS Foundation now uses its programs and services directed towards competitive snowsports athletes to reach other demographics; particularly the youth and parents of Routt County. The LMS Foundation is pleased to use its experience providing for the needs of the snowsports world to endeavor to include those youth and families who may not have access to the programs associated with snowsports. Because the pursuit of snowsports is oftentimes an exclusive and financially restrictive activity, the LMS Foundation sees a great potential to include those less fortunate in the same constructive activities associated with training for skiing and snowboarding. Because of the great history and recognition the community of Steamboat Springs, CO has established based upon excellence in competitive snowsports, the LMS Foundation sees a great need to include the benefits and opportunities associate with success in snowsports with all of the communities in Routt County. To date, all of the programs, services, scholarships, and activities provided by the LMS Foundation have come from internal endowments. Based on the well established history of the foundation, and the resulting confidence for longevity and effectiveness in the future, the LMS Foundation is now excited to venture towards participating with other organizations to maximize the breadth and effectiveness of its endeavors. INTRODUCTION The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation has a wonderful individual to exist in memory of. Our efforts and endeavors are patterned after the ideals and attitude of a tremendous individual, Landon Sawyer. There are some legacies left in life that seem unfinished. Some paths destined for greatness are cut short of fruition. It may often seem these tragedies linger only to be mourned. In this all-to-short existence we share, those gleams of greatness are too often grieved for instead of celebrated. Landon loved skiing. It was an integral interweaving in the fabric of his being. Unlike most impassioned skiers, Landon didn’t grow up around the sport. It wasn’t a part of the daily routine that many skiers are raised near. His family were not skiers; he wasn’t raised in a ski town, it wasn’t something he was automatically presented with. Landon sought out skiing on his own, as an adolescent, unexpectedly. Skiing was a part of Landon. So much that he left family and friends to attend the Lowell Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs to be closer to it. However, it wasn’t the competition in skiing or the insatiable drive to win. It was the camaraderie, being on the mountain, the sublime nature of the winter elements and the allure of the adventure. Landon was zealous about skiing and it emanated from him. With Landon in a room, whether putting on ski boots or reminiscing of the day’s adventured, everyone felt like friends. It was impossible knowing Landon and not instantly being friends. Landon’s spirit of excitement and joviality was infectious. His inherent nature infused those around him with hope and delight. His good-natured and mischievous sense of humor made laughter contagious. Due to his innate benevolentness, it was habitual to be around Landon and smile. This foundation exists both because of Landon’s fervent love of skiing and because of the way Landon impacted others. This foundation also exists due to the abrupt and tragic death that stole Landon brightness away from us. Landon’s last moments were spent doing what he loved. Skiing with his friends and teammates following a ski competition. Though the circumstances surrounding the accident that took Landon’s life may have been unavoidable, it is possible that if different measures were in place, he may still be here today. Landon’s death has had all kinds of repercussion and devastated friends and families. This foundation stands as a beacon of hope and support to ensure that those measures that may make a difference between life and death in snowsports are acknowledged and taken. Out of the ashes of the tragic loss of Landon has come the positive development of the creation of this foundation that bears his name. At the core of its purpose, the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation stands proudly to help prevent the loss of others like Landon.
  • 6. Page: 05 NEED ASSESSMENT: Overview Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [II] NEED ASSESSMENT There exist innumerable, negative consequences of the many needs to fill for Rout County. Problems ranging from substance abuse to the health risks posed by physical inactivity create perpetual challenges for human services to abate. The most hanious risk we face is recitivism and continuation of the problems by not identifying and addressing the specific needs causing the dilemmas. It is clear that the most prevalent problems facing Routt County are: • A lack of facilities to provide free, fun, exciting and different after-school or evening activities to all of the county’s youth. • Candid, open dialogs about substance use and abuse targeted specifically to Routt County, and presented by medical experts. • Easy access to information about physical fitness and resources regarding staying healthy in Routt county. The most productive approach to solve these problems is to provide the tools and resources to Routt County individuals to succeed for themselves. This methodology not only creates viable solutions; but more importantly, empowers the individual so they themselves become instruments of positive change to those around them. These problems can be mitigated by designating the 2008 Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant for the enactment of the Lanon Morley Sawyer Foundation’s program to expand its three most impactful programs for all of Routt County. Heath Problems OBESITY, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE APATHY, CRIME, DEPRESSION, SUICIDE DRUG & ALCOHOL ABUSE INSUFFICIENT ACCESS TO INFORMATION IGNORANCE ABOUT DRUGS AND ALCOHOL LACK OF AFTER SCHOOL FACILITIES caused by a vicious cycle of Routt County needs Specific health problems
  • 7. Page: 06 NEED ASSESSMENT: Activities/Facilities Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [II] : (a.) NEED ASSESSMENT Our greatest resources is our youth. Providing for the strong and sustained future of Routt County means investing in the future of Routt County: the youth. However, the youth of Routt County face a myriad of potential pitfalls lying in wait to rob them of their potential for happy, successful lives. Drug and alcohol use, apathy and the health problems caused by inactivity are all major problems that all of Routt County faces as a result of being a rural area. These problems have a direct correlation to a lack of constructive activities outside of school time. The over arching, vital need for after-school activities is especially true in Routt County. The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation proposes a two step approach to aid in filling the need of after-school activities: • The first step is supplying a facility that will be enticing enough to encourage attendance while being able to accommodate Routt County youth and allow them to engage in physical activities . • The second is to provide constructive, accessible, physical activities that are both fun and that the youth of Routt County want to participate in. The final need is cost. The Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will allow the LMS Foundation to provide these activities and the aforementioned facility to Routt County youth for free. By ensuring they have access to excellent facilities with specific activities that are as alluring as negative choices, together we can provide the structure that will lead to the success of our youth. “After-school hours are a critical time for youth. That time can represent either an opportunity to learn and grow, through quality after-school programs, or a time of risk to youth's health and safety. The after-school hours are the peak time for juvenile crime and risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. Most experts agree that after-school programs offer a healthy and positive alternative. These programs keep kids safe, improve academic achievement and help relieve the stresses on today's working families.” From The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center: “There is a real need in Routt County of affordable and accessible after-school activities ... There is a big chunk of our youth in our community that don’t have a place to go or things to do. In the rural areas, especially in South Routt and Hayden, there are limited options.” In a July 1st, 2007 Steamboat Pilot Article, Colleen Lyon, Routt County director for Grand Futures Prevention Coalition, stresses this reality:
  • 8. Page: 07 Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [II] : (b.) NEED ASSESSMENT NEED ASSESSMENT: Substance Ignorance The misuse and abuse of pharmaceutical and elicit drugs along with alcohol is, and will continue to remain a serious problem in Routt County. Ignorance is currently the greatest need to fill in order to combat the abuse of substances. The need to continue to effectively educate individuals and groups regarding what these substances are and their actual impact on human health is imperative. Many programs have made attempts at educating both the youth and adults regarding drug and alcohol abuse. While some methods have been effective, others have failed. The most important need is not deciding whether one method was more effective than another. Instead, it is continuing a barrage of new education and information. There will always be a need regarding ignorance, confusion and misunderstanding regarding substances. The most effective way to address that need now is to provide open, candid discussions directly to the people of Routt County from medical experts. The Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will allow the LMS Foundation to extend its already successful “Substance Use” seminar and round-table discussions (from the “Architecture for a New World”Speaker Seminar Series) to all of Routt County. “There are feasible solutions to substance abuse in rural areas. Since access to treatment services is a fundamental hurdle to addressing substance abuse in rural areas ... alternative methods of providing education and counseling are relevant” From the 2002 report, Substance Abuse - Trends in Rural Areas by Linnae Hutchison and Craig Blakely: “The National Association of Counties says [drug use] is the biggest problem facing local authorities... [drug] addiction is rampant in rural areas... ... the biggest danger may be ignorance.” In a December 21st, 2007 Independent News and Media article, Andrew Buncombe, reports the most recent data regarding rural areas: “A meta-analysis of 143 adolescent drug prevention programs ... indicated that peer education programs had positive health outcomes in 5 distinct areas: • knowledge • attitudes • drug use • skills and behavior” From his presentation from the 2001 2nd International Drugs and Young People Conference, A. Bleeker reports : “The abuse of prescription drugs has increased sharply since the mid-1990s ...data indicate[s] that rates of abuse for prescription narcotics ... and codeine have increased sharply over the past decade. From the National Drug Intelligence Center’s February, 2005 National Drug Threat Assessment on pharmaceutical drug use:
  • 9. Page: 08 Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [II] : (c.) & (d.) NEED ASSESSMENT NEED ASSESSMENT: Access to Information NEED ASSESSMENT: Summation Sustainability is the final need addressed by the LMS Foundation’s program to improve the health and human services of Routt County. Once Routt County individuals have participated in either the physical activities offered by free access to the LMS Training Center, or have been a part of seminars or discussions regarding substances, there is a great need to continue to provide access to those experiences and education. Continuing education is vital to sustaining any initiated purpose. The same is true for Routt County. There is a need for an easily accessible, user-friendly source of information to maintain and perpetuate the positive outcomes caused by the LMS Foundation’s Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant program. There is a need for an aesthetically-pleasing, intuitive, web-based reference system. The need of sustainability is satisfied by immediate and simple access to information. This final solution provides access to Routt County specific health and exercise information and suggestions, training/health tips from experts. In addition, cataloged and downloadable reference materials from the“Substance Use”programs to review and share with others. By addressing and filling the three Routt County needs of (1) after-school youth activities/facilities, (2) seminars and open discussions about substances from experts and (3) sustainability through access to information, the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will have substantial positive impact on the health and human services of Routt County. • 10. Page: 09 Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [III] : (1.) GOALS&OBJECTIVES PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Overview The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation is pleased to be able to provide effective programs and services to the specific group of youth snowsports participants. However, it is unfortunate that our current target is so defined in number, and does not reach the entire community. The LMS Foundation’s main goal with regard to using the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant is to provide access to the these established programs and services by all the youth and families throughout the entirety of Routt County as well as expand them for enhanced effectiveness. With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant it would be possible to accomplish the following objectives : • Combat the lack of safe and constructive after-school activities through the availability of the LMS Training Center. • Encourage healthy exercise routines and programs by Routt County youth utilizing the LMS Training Center. • Help stem substance abuse by provide free information regarding prescription and elicit drug and alcohol abuse throughout Routt County through the LMS Foundation Speaker Seminar Series. • Establish a central location to gain accessible, complete specialized and innovative information regarding health, training, exercise, drug abuse, treatment possibilities and modalities, as well as other resources. The over-arching goals of implementing the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant are: (1) To promote the health and development of Routt County Youth by providing free access to the LMS Foundation Steamboat Springs Training Center. (2) Expand the services of the existing LMS Foundation“Architecture for a New World” speaker seminar series from the confines of Steamboat Springs to schools, educators, community workers, doctors, health clinics, and residents throughout Routt County. (3) Building an addition to the LMS Foundation website, www.landosmojo.org, to house easy-to-access resources for Routt County residents. GOALSOBJECTIVES
  • 11. Page: 10 Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [III] : (1.), (a.) GOALS&OBJECTIVES PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Activities/Facilities When the LMS Foundation moved its headquarters to Steamboat Springs in 2007, it was presented with a request to fill an immediate need for the community: a training center. Over the last seven months the LMS Foundation - in partnership with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club - has donated the financial means necessary to help the SSWSC turn a simple warehouse into a world-class training center. At the present time, admittance to use the training center is restricted to individuals with a U.S.S.A. (United States Ski and Snowboard Association) licence. Furthermore, due to the high costs of maintaining the facility, individuals not associated with the SSWSC must pay a $15.00 entry fee. The LMS Foundation would like to designate a significant portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards Routt County youth, especially those“at risk”, being able to use the LMS Training Center for free. The following objectives are accomplished through the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant making it possible for Routt County youth to utilize the LMS Training center for free : • Provide accessible, safe and constructive“after-school”& evening times for Routt County youth to participate in fun, physical activities in a top-notch facility. • Educate Routt County youth regarding physical fitness, setting and achieving goals, and the possibilities of athletic endeavors. • Interaction of“at risk”Routt County youth with positive role models in the form of SSWSC coaches/staff during“Open Nights”. The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards“after-school”activities: (1) Making possible weekly“Routt County Youth Open Nights”at the LMS Training Center: º All Routt County youth with a USSA licence can attend the“Open Nights”. (2) To supply, by application, USSA Licenses (which are required to use the training center) to needy Routt County youth who could otherwise not afford a licence : º A total of 160 licences would be available by application. º Application approval process would be based upon financial need, earnest desire to use the facility and potential of being“at risk”. º Time Spent reviewing and making decisions regarding acceptance of the applications will be donated by LMS Foundation personnel. (3) To provide trained, licensed and certified SSWSC coaches/staff to instruct during open nights and for additional costs associated with keeping the training center open for“Open Night”sessions. GOALSOBJECTIVES
  • 12. A strong component of the LMS Foundation’s philanthropic endeavors is the creation and implementation of its “Architecture for a New World” speaker seminar series. So far, the LMS Foundation has provided one substantial seminar to the community of Steamboat Springs. The speakers were internationally renown doctors who specialize in the chemical makeup and treatment modalities of both prescription and elicit drugs. Through this one seminar, the speakers were able to meet with and educate the Routt County Sheriffs Dept.,the staff of the Steamboat Springs Middle School and provided a free seminar to the community. The response was overwhelming: many requests were made for additional presentations, information and access to the topics discussed. A portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will go towards providing more of the same and related topics to educate all of Routt County. The following objectives are accomplished through the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant making it possible for the expansion of health seminars throughout Routt County : • Reduction in drug use, and violent crime as a result of candid discussions and education about the real impact of substances. • Awareness of the truth regarding the substances we all deal with every day. • Stimulation of discussions about these topics between parents and youth. • Reduce prescription and elicit drug and alcohol abuse in Routt County. The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards expanding on the LMS Foundation’s Educational Speaker Series: (1) Bringing in medical experts to have candid and thorough discussions regarding prescription and street drug abuse, treatments modalities, physical effects of substances and how to deal with the topics to the following venues: º Routt County schools via assemblies. º Routt County general populous via community events. º Routt County educators and school staff via private discussions. º Routt County law enforcement officials via private discussions. º Routt County health clinics and doctors via private discussions. (2) To supply reference literature regarding the topics specific to Routt County. º Time required to compile materials donated by LMS Foundation staff. (3) Informing Routt County community members regarding the speakers and topics. (4) Securing low cost venues for general session and/or providing minimal snacks and/or soft drinks/coffee at the events. Page: 11 Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. • 13. Page: 12 GOALSOBJECTIVES With the designation of funds from the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant towards creating an informative section of the LMS Foundation website, it would be possible to accomplish the following objectives : • Provide specific heath related information tailored to Routt County regarding illegal and prescription drug use and abuse, methods and tools to deal with substances, complete educational resources pertaining to substances, information and instructions about seeking treatment , etc. • Create and maintain a user-friendly and fun-to-use database regarding exercise, nutrition, examples of constructive outdoor activities, fitness ideas/information and a wealth of data from coaches, trainers, and athletes** associated with the foundation about improving quality of life through physical activities. • Provide detailed information regarding“Open Nights”at the LMS Training Center made possible by the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant. Website will contain detailed information regarding the application for a U.S.S.A. licence,“Open Night”schedule times and other important information. The goals of the Arthur E. Anderson Grant towards accessible learning tools: (1) Building an addition to the LMS Foundation website, www.landosmojo.org, for the purpose of providing information regarding: º Health and substance abuse topics specific to Routt County resulting the LMS Foundation’s access to the nation’s leading Ph.D.s, M.D.’s and Medical Companies. º Webcasts of the Speaker Seminar Series and downloadable additional resources and topics from the seminars. º Information on the LMS Foundation training center and its accessibility to Routt County Residents. Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [III] : (1.), (c.) GOALS&OBJECTIVES PROGRAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES: Inform/Sustain The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation website is currently a place for individuals to find information regarding the foundation’s mission and history. Currently, the LMS Foundation does not have within its budget, funds necessary to expand the website to include access to interactive information about its programs and services. Information is one of the most valuable tools in supporting the heath of individuals and assisting them in accessing beneficial services. It is vital that residents of Routt County are aware of the programs available to them through the LMS Foundation. A portion of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will go towards building a new component of the LMS Foundation website.
  • 14. Page: 13 THE LANDON MORLEY SAWYER TRAINING CENTER After making a $25,000 donation to the SSWSC, a world-class trampoline and exercise training center has emerged. The center contains two (2) Olympic quality fly-bed trampolines, wooden safety decking, a complete custom-pad system, safety harnesses and a workout/exercise area. This great facility is currently only being advertised as available to SSWSC athletes and individuals with a U.S.S.A. licence. Maintaining such an exclusive ‘guest list’ for this center is a travesty. The LMS Foundation recognizes that this separation is unhealthy and should be remedied. It is possible to make it available to everyone. With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant the training center can be made available to all of Routt County youth. This facility stands to diminish the problems caused by the lack of after-school activities. However, for most everyone in Routt County, the most significant hurdle in using this facility is cost. The cost for an individual to enter the facility, maintaining the facility, staffing qualified coaches/monitors and insurance. The liability risk associated with such a facility in this day and age is enormous. The insurance question is therefore a difficult one to solve. This debacle is accomplished and insurance for individuals to use the facility is achieved through the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (U.S.S.A.). Purchasing a U.S.S.A. licence enables anyone to use the facility. Anyone can purchase a U.S.S.A. licence. However, for many Routt County individuals, even the least expensive, 1 year, $50 youth U.S.S.A. licence is too expensive. It is these individuals who are most often in the most need of an opportunity like using the LMS Training Center. With the help of the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant, 160 U.S.S.A. licences will be available through a need-based application process to Routt County youth. In addition, one evening per week for an entire year will be designated as “Open Nights”. Any Routt County individual with U.S.S.A. licence will be able to participate in the facility for free, instead of paying the $15.00 cost. Finally, the Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant will make it possible to keep the facility open and running those additional evenings as well as have a trained SSWSC staff member overseeing, instructing and mentoring the Routt County participants. Making the LMS Training Center available to all of Routt County is a fabulous improvement to the health of Routt County. Not only are exercise and activity promoted, but unity, diversity and goal setting are accomplished. This provides significant improvement to the needs left by apathy, boredom, inactivity and a lack of after-school activities and facilities. Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Building on a successful seminar, and expanding it to Routt County: Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [III] : (2.), (b.) METHODOLOGY PROGRAM METHODOLOGY: Substance Education Architecture for a New World Speaker Seminar Series In an effort to provide education on a variety of important subjects to young minds in the ski community, the LMS Foundation created the “Architecture for a New World” Speaker Seminar Series in the summer of 2007. In collaboration with the Lowell Whiteman School, the first seminar was conducted in Steamboat Springs in January, 2008. The topic, “Substance Use”, involved a candid discussion regarding the basic chemical makeup and subsequent effects on the human body of pharmaceutical drugs, elicit drugs and alcohol. The speakers brought in for the event are internationally renown experts in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, substance addiction and treatment modalities. A two stage approach was taken to deliver the message to the Steamboat Springs community: a large seminar-format lecture in an auditorium setting and small, round-table discussions with specific groups. The response from the event was overwhelming. Particularly from public servants of the community. Two round-table discussion events that were especially encouraging were a discussion with the Steamboat Springs Middle School nurses and teachers and a dialog with the Routt County Sheriffs Department. It was made clear that specific, candid discussions from experts regarding the true nature of the substances surrounding us and their impact is a definite need in Routt County. Many comments were made requesting more information, reference materials regarding the expert’s presentations and additional sessions. From the success of the initial endeavor to the Steamboat Springs community, it will provide a much needed human service to expand the “Substance Use” seminar from the LMS Foundation’s “Architecture for a New World”Speaker Seminar Series for the benefit of the health of all Routt County.

  • 23. Page: 22 The primary aspect of the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundations’ s aspirations is to promote safety and provide supirior support for snowsports athletes. The purpose of the LMS Foundation with regard to this objective is threefold: to educate, empower and enrich the lives of snowsports athletes. The maturation of our youth is not an issue to be taken lightly. Activities, events and competitive arenas must be structured in such a way as to provide the upcoming generation with the inspira- tion to strive towards better- ment. It takes more than simply running through a specific set of motions to be successful. A complete, varied understanding is necessary to both properly instruct others as well as endeavor towards one’s own goals. Greatness in athletics does not equate to a fulfilling existence. Pursuance of more powerful presence to flourish in life, does. Application for: Routt County United Way Arthur E. Anderson Impact Grant Part [V] : (1.) Goals: - Promoting the adult in the child and the child in the adult. - Education is paramount. - Stressing the importance of learning and knowledge. - Putting athletics and other endeavors in their proper perspective: [success in sports is not the end, but rather should be a means to incorporate towards accomplishing a greater end.] - Helping "youngsters, parents, coaches..." maximize their experiences together. - - Promoting ways for youth to "make it in life" without loosing their sense of self, purpose and soul. - Integrating what youth do in sports and other activities to important components of life. Supporting Snowsport Competition Without a venue to showcase talent and challenge one’s self, there exists the risk of giving up, not following through and not striving for one’s best. Snowsports competitions are too often underfunded and athletes left abandoned. • 29. Page: - The Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation has turned the loss of an outstanding freestyle skier, Landon Sawyer, into a win for today’s snowsports competitors and, effectively, for all skiers. The foundation’s funding goes towards educating, training, and inspiring young athletes to safely purse their aspirations. These elite and highly-visible competitors, who have been positively influenced by LMS’ programs, then set an example that millions of regular skiers observe and follow. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club tips its hat to the LMS foundation and we appreciate the positive results that come from its funding investment in skiing. ---Rick DeVos, Executive Director, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club “The Steamboat Ski Resort is aligned with the Landon Morely Sawyer foundation because it brings to life, in very practical terms, one of our main goals and objectives: skier safety. LMS creates a ripple effect that looks like this: the foundation supports and educates elite skiers on safety; these highly-visible elite skiers practice safety by doing things like wearing helmets in magazines and on the hill; the general ski populace, and kids specifically, watch and emulate the elite skiers and, BINGO, we see safer skiing throughout the sport.” ---Mike Lane, Public Relations Director, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp Companies in and out of the ski industry should be fully on-board with the Landon Morley Sawyer Foundation’s investment in promoting safe skiing. The foundation accomplishes this ambitious goal by funding educational and training programs for elite young competitors. These programs teach athletes that ‘hucking’ their bodies off cliffs for fame and fortune does not equal a long and healthy skiing career or productivity over a lifetime. Regular skiers watch and learn from these elite competitors who appear in the media. Non-competing skiers undoubtedly hear these athletes talking the importance of intelligent training as critical safety preparation for their huge aerial tricks in the terrain park. In this way, ‘Joe-skier’ is influenced to ski both more safely and smarter. By changing the behavior of spotlighted athletes, the LMS foundation’s funding produces an increase in safety among skiers of all ages and abilities. ---Andy Wirth, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Intrawest.
