Design Thinking Action Lab 2013
-I wish we’d been taught to be a little neater
or more organized.
-One thing we didn’t really learn was how to standardize our
work.
-Sometimes I come into a project and have to use other people’s assets.
-I would like to have had a project changed mid-stream; where I had to finish
someone else’s project.
-Sometimes I’ll see someone’s work and think they’re just adequate, but
they may be a better hire than another person because they can deliver,
they really handle their s**t.
-Working on a team wasn’t emphasized as much as it could have
been. A client may ask for a 30 second reel, but then partway
through they decide they need a 15 and 45 second spot, too.
-…or sometimes, a client will nix an idea because
they don’t like the color blue.
I think that he felt his schooling gave him an excellent foundation
to work from, but that he was essentially unprepared for the reality of
working in industry (graphic design).
I feel as though, while he SAID he was basically happy
with how his education and subsequent experiences turned out,
he has kind of a nagging doubt that maybe things would be
a little different if he'd been prepared differently.
A driven, self-reliant, confident freelance

individual contribution
Practice or better engage in the core
competency of working in groups
One thing not quoted was that he is
considering a job offer with a
journalistic publication. While he has
been doing freelance work for the last
several years, it seems like the offers
he's been contemplating (he received
two from different departments!)
legitimize the course he's been on.
Moving to a (somewhat) buttoned-up,
regulat paycheck, large-scale operation
is a growth step that shows he's got
what it takes to compete and contribute
in an environment he cares about. I say
this because, while not listed in "Say,"
he also mentioned that he's a little tired
of working on spots for things he either
doesn't care about or doesn't impact
him. Working for this publication would
be fulfilling, and not just creatively.
He's spent much of his freelance career
learning how to jump into and contribute to
projects, and now it's time to become part of
an established team.
