At 28-30%growth, Indian events industry could reach$10 billion in a 10 year
horizon: Sudhanshu Vats
Author | exchange4media News Service | Wednesday, Oct 19,2016 8:12 AM

The Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), India’ apex
body of the events and experiential marketing industry hosted its eighth edition of
EEMAX Global Conclave & Awards. At the event Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO,
Viacom18 Media, was invited to speak on ‘A look into the future: Experiences in
a Connected World. Technology, Infrastructure, Consumer engagement,
emerging paradigm.’
He started with how he thinks of the events industry as a ‘sunrise industry’ and
moved on its size. He put a number, “Indian (events) industry just turned Rs
5,800 crore to be precise (excluding price of rights). Sabbas Joseph quoted
sometime back the size of New York’s event and entertainment industry which is
close to $10-12 billion. This included certain ecosystem number. Having said
that the disparity is high still.”
Then he asked the important question, “What do we need to do?”
“My view is that at 28-30 per cent growth, we could reach $10 billion in a 10 year
horizon. It’s important because I think this is going to remain an industry which
will grow fast. I want to make mention of four key areas where we can make an
intervention if at all we aspire to reach $5-10 billion.”
He started his first point with technology, “Within that there’s VR (virtual
reality). It’s at that tipping point and will go mainstream. If that happens, this
phenomena will dial up the industry to a whole different level. VR headsets are
becoming affordable. The trial pieces are as inexpensive as Rs 200. VR headset,
in my opinion, is largely taken care of. Then the smartphones are getting
affordable and have more features, thanks to India and China. The third key
piece for VR to go mainstream is data, both the data speed and data price.
These are driven by 4G which is spearheaded by Jio. So with that coming around
both data speed and data price are taken care of. With all of these in place, VR
will go mainstream. This means if you do an event at one place, you could have
1000 or 100,000s’ experiencing it absolutely live. You dial up experiential
entertainment to a different level. That’s just round the corner. It will happen. I am
a fan of VR as well as AR (Augmented Reality). But the scope of latter is slightly
less limited than VR. But then again it’s an important piece when it comes to live
pieces. In some of the reality areas in TV there is room for AR.”
He further added, “It is analytics drives ROI but data drives ROI. One of the key
issues which has already been there with events within media and entertainment
is the measurability of it. Can you measure it especially the
advertisers? Advertising pie is growing. It’s close to Rs 55,000-60,000 crore
across all mediums. But the events’ ability to get a substantial part of this pie is
limited. That’s because of the measurability and the scale of the piece. In future
with events, technology and social platforms and with the ability to put this data
together the proposition (which we could have) for advertisers as we move
forward is hugely compelling and the premiums they could command will be
phenomenal.”
Block-chain technology ‘which is being talked about in the financial world’ turns
out to be his third piece. He confesses that it’s futuristic ‘but also around the
corner.’ He explained how it is important to events, “My assessment is this
technology will give a great opportunity for live events once again because block
chain technology will enable artists much more. It can do is smart programming.
It means when the person is performing you are able to do real time transmission
of some of this piece along with encryption. The key is if you can get encryption
going there real time. This is not really far, around five years away in my
assessment. It also empowers the artist to a very large extent and takes away
the role of intermediaries. Live business will always bring artistes together. An
artist’s ability to get discovered and reach out to his/her target audience will get
dialled up considerably. This technology has far reaching and arguably big thing
coming up for us.”
Lastly, he mentioned, “The fourth piece is the physical infrastructure in a country
like India which can bring in global audiences. India does one of the biggest
events. Look at Kumbh Mela. It’s an event which has the largest aggregation of
human kind anywhere in the planet. The physical infrastructure with the ease of
doing business should come together. There are so many events in India which
have a large global curiosity and global audience available. Their ability to come
here would be determined by physical infrastructure which will take time. But the
good news is government is already working on roads and airports, amongst
others. These things also need to get dialled up. This is a 10 year horizon.”
Interestingly enough, he linked all the four points to tourism, “Media and
entertainment as an industry per se on its own may look small in numbers. But
the multiplier ability of media and entertainment as an industry and events
particularly within that and its ability to dial up tourism are extremely high. There
is absolutely no doubt in my mind along with tourism we could definitely get these
billions and maybe more. If we get these four key pieces in place we would be
able to get this done.”

Events and activation industry grown
at 15% to INR 4,258 crore in 2014-15:
EY Report
Delhi, 08 April, 2015
Inside
 News releases
 PR contacts
 PR activities
 Analyst relations
 Fact and figures
 Published Editorials
 Share
 Organized events industry to grow to INR 5, 779 crores by 2016 – 17
 Staff strength has increased from an average of 55 employees in 2011-12 to 84 employees
in 2014-15 resulting in an increase in payroll costs from 13% to 18% of total costs
 Margins are expected to decline from an average of 16% to 13% over the next two years
mainly due to a growth in overall costs by 12%, and more particularly in payroll costs by
15%, as companies expect to increase their average headcount from 84 to 104 employees.
The events and activations industry has grown at 15% annually from INR 2,800 crore in 2011-12 to
INR 4,258 crore in 2014-15 according to an EY – EEMA (Event and Entertainment Management
Association) report titled ‘Making experiences in India: The events and activations industry’. The
report, released today, states that while managed events remain the largest service offering, IP
(Intellectual Property) and digital events are growing at a faster rate than managed events. The key
strengths of the industry remains its ability to get things done, and the ideation and efficiency with
which it operates. That said, there is a need for the industry to work on acquiring the right talent,
managing costs, demonstrating ROI to marketers and increasing transparency in operations.
Ashish Pherwani, Partner and Media & Entertainment Advisory Leader, EY India says, “The
events and activations industry holds great potential and this is evident from the considerable growth
that the industry witnessed over the last few years. Our report aims to provide insights around key
strengths of the industry and the challenges it faces. The report also looks into the opportunities for
M&A transactions, implications around taxation and corporate governance.”
Sabbas Joseph, President, Event and Entertainment Management Association says, “With a
new government at the helm, there is a growing interest in the culture and people. The events and
activations industry is best poised to capitalize on this opportunity and there is a crying need for a
new world order - one in which event companies work along with government to create an events
calendar that drives tourism and related industries.”
According to the report, the events and activations industry is expected to grow to INR 5,779 crores
by 2016-17. This growth will be on the back of marketers increasing their below the line (including
digital) spends to 21% of their total marketing spends. The growth will also be led by personal
events, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), activations and sports.
Non-metro markets are expected to increase in importance as marketers look to tier II and tier III
cities for incremental growth, states the report. Digital events and activation is also expected to grow
significantly on the back of smart phone penetration, internet availability and the cost efficiency of
such campaigns for marketers.
While the industry has reported very few M&A transactions over the last few years, there exists
scope for consolidation. Valuations are driven by IPs owned, advertising agencies’ interest in
activations, and digital events and sports leagues. On the taxation front, double taxation, taxation
across multiple states, and varying and inconsistent application of different taxes are some of the
challenges faced by the industry. Also, the introduction of Goods and Services tax could have a
significant impact on the industry in terms of rates and implementation across multi-state activities.
The report also states that the introduction of the new Companies Act, 2013, will result in some key
changes in internal financial controls, compliance with more than 60 acts and regulations, and
implementing a vigil mechanism to identify undesirable activities.
EY also conducted a workshop with CEOs of the industry that resulted in Vision 20:20 for the
industry’s future success. The industry needs to work towards the following initiatives:
 Internal aspects: Improve the quality of talent through skill definition for various jobs, skill
development, job security, compensation benchmarking and implementation of health and
safety standards. The industry must build robust policies, processes and information systems
to manage business efficiently and safely, and implement technology and automation.
 External aspects: The industry needs to work on its positioning to marketers, build an
account focus and demonstrate returns more effectively. There is a need to improve the
supply chain by developing quality vendors, implementing a system of vendor accreditation
and improving overall risk management. The regulatory ecosystem needs to be made more
conducive by simplifying taxation, permissions and copyright issues.
 Strategic aspects: The industry must build more IPs focused on defined communities of
interest to marketers, and embrace the opportunity provided by marketers’ increasing spends
on digital media.
The report is based on the findings of a survey conducted via extensive discussion with over 60
respondents including the heads of events and activation companies across the country, along with
inputs from advertisers and sponsors.

Today, sport’s contribution to India’s total employment is just .05%. The great initiatives such as Indian
Premier League (Cricket), Hockey India League, Indian Badminton League, Prokabbadi, Indian
Super League (Football) and professionalization of Heritage sports events such as Goti, Gilli Danda,
Lagori, Kilithatt, Gatta Gusthi are changing the old face of Indian sports. Once, we believed that only
cricket will succeed in India. But the above mentioned initiatives have shown Indians, a world of sports
beyond cricket. These initiatives prove that sports have a future in India as a business.
The growth and development of the Indian sport industry is creating opportunities for management
professionals in a wide variety of settings. Boosted by initiatives such as professional leagues of
developed sports, commercialization of underdeveloped sports, professionalization of heritage sports and
increased corporate sector investments, sports industry expects a faster growth in shorter time frame. It
has the potential to overtake IT and related industries before 2020 in every aspect.
The job opportunities above mentioned initiatives created and going to create are enormous. New sports
initiatives require professional human capital to speed up its growth. But in India, availability of
professional sports managers are less or minimal. Government of India takes initiatives to make India a
sports super power. It will not be realized without professional sports managers.
Indian sports industry has an impressive growth prospect even if its fundamentals are not solid. The
professional sports managers can only bring a solid foundation to India’s sports industry.
Sports Goods Industry in India
The sports goods industry in India is nearly a century old and has flourished due to the skills of its
workforce. Being labour-intensive in nature, the industry provides employment to more than 500,000
people. The nucleus of this industry in India is in and around the states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
 Jalandhar in the state of Punjab and Meerut in the state of Uttar Pradesh account for nearly 75
per cent of total production.
 Together, the two towns house more than 3,000 manufacturing units and 130 exporters.
 The Indian sports goods industry also has a presence in the cities of Mumbai, Kolkata and
Chennai, albeit at a lower scale.
Exports – A Momentous Growth
India’s share of the global sports goods export market is expected to grow manifold, with the country
establishing the credibility of its goods in the international market. Indian sporting goods are well known
around the world and have made a mark in the global sports goods market. The industry exports nearly
60 per cent of its total output to sports-loving people the world over.
 The sports goods market in India was valued at US$ 2 billion in 2012-13. The market is growing
as 35-40 per cent a year and is expected to reach US$ 3.6 billion by 2015. The growth is
expected on account of increasing awareness about health and fitness in the country.
 India exported sports goods worth around US$ 256 million in 2013-14 as compared to US$
214.95 million in 2012-13 and registering a growth of about 19 per cent.
 The major items to be exported during 2013-14 includes inflatable balls, cricket bats general
exercise equipments, sports nets and protective equipment for cricket.
The most interesting factor is that the land of Sports Engineering, United Kingdom is the major importer of
Indian sports goods. It shows India’s ability to grow as a sporting super power.
KERALA & SPORTS INDUSTRY
Kerala is a major sporting state of India. But, the sports industry is not yet developed in Kerala. We have
a great prospect in sport industry due to various factors like sports loving people, highly educated
workforce, and availability of basic infrastructures like electricity and raw materials and scope of MSEs. If
Kerala government can support sports industry like IT sector, Kerala can compete with Jalandar and
Meerut in a big way.
Moreover, the opportunities in sports never restrict to sports goods manufacturing. The following figure
will illustrate the unexploited opportunities in sports industry.
SMRI (Sports & Management Research Institute) explores this opportunity to strengthen the Indian
Sports Industry by creating excellent sports management and sports engineering professionals.

Sports Industry In India
Last Updated: August, 2015
India’s sports goods industry is nearly a century old and has flourished, driven by a skilled w orkforce. Being labour-intensive
in nature, the industry provides employment to more than 500,000 people. India’s sporting goods are popular around the
w orld and have made a mark in the global sports goods market. The domestic industry exports nearly 60 per cent of its total
output.
HIGHLIGHTS
In 2014–15, the UK, the US, the UAE, Australia, South Africa and Germany w ere the major export markets for Indian sports
goods. France, Poland, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, New Zealand and Italy, w ere among other export destinations.
Inflatable balls, cricket bats & leg pads, rugby balls, sports nets and gymnasium & athletics equipment accounted for about
35 per cent share of the total sports goods exports, as of 2014–15.
Indian sports products have been exported for global events. For the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Jalandhar supplied
80,000 soccer balls, w hereas Meerut supplied training and practice kits such as free-kick dummies, corner flags, cone
markers and linesmen flags.
India has emerged as the leading international sourcing destination for inflatable balls and other sports goods for
international brands such as Mitre, Lotto, Umbro and Wilson.
SPORTS GOODS EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL
The Sports Goods Export Promotion Council (SGEPC) promotes the export of sports goods and toys from India. SGEPC
represents the leading 200 manufacturers and exporters of sports goods and toys in India.
The global sports sector is estimated to be worth between $480-620 billion. However, in
India, sport is yet tobe recognized as an economic sector, mainly due to the fact there
has been little or no comprehensive study done on the industry’s size, potential, and on
the available opportunities that are on offer.
The sports industry sector may include several different segments such as sports
tourism, sporting goods (in manufacturing and retail), sporting garments, and the
available opportunities in sporting management and sponsorship. It is seen across the
globe that sports as a full-fledged industry can and may contribute about 1 to 5 percent
of the country’s GDP.
However, a lack of sporting culture has held back the growth of a similar industry in
India in the past, despite the growing awareness and interest in various different sports
besides cricket. Hence, due to a lack of industry status along with a lack of sporting
culture, corporate investments in India’s sports have traditionally been limited to only
non-profit corporate social responsibility activities and initiatives, while the scope for
exploring profit-related activities under the sports industry have not been explored in
vast depth.
///////////////////////////////////.Telangana ( i
/tɛlənˈɡɑːnə/) is one of the 29 states in India, located
in southern India. Formed in June 2014 as the youngest state in India, from the northwestern part of
the Joint State of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana has an area of 112,077 square kilometres
(43,273 sq mi), and a population of 35,193,978 (2011 census).[3]
It is the twelfth largest state in India,
and the twelfth most populated state in India. Its major cities
include Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Nizamabad. Telangana is bordered by
the states of Maharashtra to the north and north west, Chhattisgarh to the north, Karnataka to the
west and Andhra Pradesh to the east and south.[4]
Telangana had a history as the Telugu-speaking region of the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by
the Nizam of Hyderabad.[5]
It joined the Union of India in 1948. In 1956, the Hyderabad state was
dissolved as part of the linguistic reorganisation of states and Telangana was merged with
former Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. Following a movement for separation, Telangana was
awarded separate statehood on 2 June 2014. Hyderabad will continue to serve as the joint capital
city for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for no more than ten years.[6]

Etymology[edit]
According to Kingshuk Nag who authored "Battleground Telangana" (2011); Etymology of Telangana
is uncertain; it is believed that the word Telugu is derived from Telu in Gondi language-A dialact
spoken by the tribals of Chhattisgarh—(in present-day a state located in North of Telangana), and
plural form of Telu is Telunga which means "white skinned people", and thus making the word
Telangana.[7]
According to Campbell, Alexander Duncan (1789–1857); who authored a book "A Grammar of the
Teloogoo language" (1816) mentions that; A theory suggest that the name Telangana is derived
from the word Trilinga (Sanskrit: त्रित्रिङ्ग), as in the Trilinga Desa, which translates to "the country of
the three lingas". According to a Hindu legend, Shiva descended in the lingam form on three
mountains, Kaleshwaram, Srisailam and Draksharama, which marked the boundaries of
the Trilingadesa (Sanskrit: त्रित्रिङ्गदेश), later called Telinga, Telunga or Telugu.[8][9]
The word "Telinga" changed over time to "Telangana" and the name "Telangana" was designated to
distinguish the predominantly Telugu-speaking region of the erstwhile Hyderabad State from its
predominantly Marathi-speaking one, Marathwada. After Asaf Jahis ceded the Seemandhra region
to the British, the rest of the Telugu region retained the name Telingana and the other parts were
called Madras Presidency's Circars and Ceded.[10]
One of the earliest uses of a word similar to Telangana can also be seen in a name of Malik
Maqbul (14th century CE), who was called the Tilangani, which implies that he was from Tilangana.
He was the commander of the Warangal Fort (Kataka Pāludu).[11]
History[edit]
Main article: History of Telangana
Telangana was governed by many rulers, including the Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE to 220 CE),
the Kakatiya Dynasty (1083–1323), the Musunuri Nayaks (1326–1356) the Delhi Sultanate,
the Bahmani Sultanate (1347–1512), Qutb Shahi dynasty (1512–1687), Mughal Empire (1687–1724)
and Asaf Jahi Dynasty (1724–1948).
Early history[edit]
Main articles: Maurya Empire and Satavahana dynasty
The Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE to 220 CE) became the dominant power in this region. It
originated from the lands between the Godavari and Krishna rivers and was based at Amaravathi
and Dharanikota.[12]
After the decline of the Satavahanas, various dynasties, such as
the Vakataka, Vishnukundina, Chalukya, Rashtrakuta and Western Chalukya, ruled the area.[13]

The Telangana area experienced its golden age during the reign of the Kakatiya dynasty , which
ruled most parts of the present day Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from 1083 to 1323
CE.[13]
Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra II were prominent rulers from the Kakatiya dynasty. The
dynasty weakened with the attack of Malik Kafur in 1309 and was dissolved after the defeat of
Prataparudra by the forces of Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1323.[14][15]
Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi's[edit]
Golkonda Fort
Charminar in Hyderabad
The area came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century, followed by the Bahmani
Sultanate. Quli Qutb Mulk, a governor of Golkonda, revolted against the Bahmani Sultanate and
established the Qutb Shahi dynasty in 1518. On 21 September 1687, the Golkonda Sultanate came
under the rule of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after a year-long siege of the Golkonda fort.[16]
In 1712, Qamar-ud-din Khan was appointed by emperor Farrukhsiyar as the viceroy of Deccan with
the title Nizam-ul-Mulk (meaning "Administrator of the Realm"). He was later recalled to Delhi, with
Mubariz Khan appointed as the viceroy. In 1724, Qamar-ud-din Khan defeated MubarizKhan to
reclaim the Deccan suba, establishing it as an autonomous province of the Mughal empire. He took
the name Asif Jah, starting what came to be known as the Asif Jahi dynasty.[13]
He named the
area Hyderabad Deccan. Subsequent rulers retained the title Nizam ul-Mulk and were called Asif
Jahi nizams or nizams of Hyderabad. The Medak and Warangal divisions of Telangana were part of
their realm.[17]
When Asif Jah I died in 1748, there was political unrest due to contention for the throne among his
sons, who were aided by opportunistic neighbouring states and colonial foreign forces. In 1769,
Hyderabad city became the formal capital of the nizams. The nizam Nasir-ud-dawlah, Asaf Jah
IV signed the Subsidiary Alliance with the British in 1799 and lost its control over the state's defence
and foreign affairs. Hyderabad State became a princely state among the presidencies and provinces
of British India.[17]
Telangana was the seat of numerous dynasties. The Chowmahalla Palace was home to the Nizams of
Hyderabad.
Post-independence[edit]
When India became independent from the British Empire in 1947, the Nizam of Hyderabad did not
want to merge with the Indian Union and wanted to remain independent. The Government of
India annexed Hyderabad State on 17 September 1948 after a military operation called Operation
Polo.[13]
It appointed a civil servant, M. K. Vellodi, as first chief minister of Hyderabad State on 26
January 1950.[18]
He administered the state with the help of English-educated bureaucrats from
the Madras and Bombay states, who were familiar with British systems of administration unlike the
bureaucrats of Hyderabad state who used a completely different administrative system. The official
language of the state was switched from Urdu to English.
In 1952, Dr. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao was elected chief minister of the Hyderabad State in its first
democratic election. During this time, there were violent agitations by some Telanganites to send the
Madras state bureaucrats back and implement a rule by the natives (mulkis) of Hyderabad.[19]
Telangana Rebellion[edit]
Main article: Telangana Rebellion
The Telangana Rebellion was a peasant revolt supported by the communists. It originated in the
Telangana regions of the Hyderabad state between 1946 and 1951, led by the Communist Party of
India (CPI).[20]
The revolt began in the Nalgonda district against the feudal lords of Reddy and Velama castes. It
quickly spread to the Warangal and Bidar districts. Peasant farmers and labourers revolted against
the local feudal landlords (jagirdars and deshmukhs) and later against the Nizam Osman Ali Khan.
The violent phase of the movement ended after the Government of India's Operation Polo.[21]
Starting
in 1951, the CPI shifted to a more moderate strategy of seeking to bring communism to India within
the framework of Indian democracy.[22]
States Reorganisation Commission[edit]
In December 1953, the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) was appointed to form states on a
linguistic basis.[23]
An agreement was reached between Telangana leaders and Andhra leaders on 20
February 1956 to merge Telangana and Andhra with promises to safeguard Telangana's
interests.[24]
After reorganisation in 1956, the region of Telangana was merged with Andhra State to
form Andhra Pradesh.
Following this Gentlemen's agreement, the central government established the unified state of
Andhra Pradesh on 1 November 1956.[25][26][27]
G.O 553 of 1959 from the united Andhra Pradesh state
moved two revenue divisions of Bhadrachalam from East Godavari and Aswaraopeta from West
Godavari to Khammam for administrative convenience.
Telangana movement[edit]
Main article: Telangana movement
There have been several movements to revoke the merger of Telangana and Andhra, major ones
occurring in 1969, 1972 and 2009. The movement for a new state of Telangana gained momentum
in the 21st century by an initiative of Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, the chief of Telangana
Rashtra Samithi, on 29 November 2009.[28]
On 9 December 2009 the Government of India
announced the process of formation of the Telangana state. Violent protests led by people in
the Coastal Andhra and Rayalseema regions occurred immediately after the announcement, and the
decision was put on hold on 23 December 2009.
The movement continued in Hyderabad and other districts of Telangana.[29]
There have been
hundreds of claimed suicides,[30]
strikes, protests and disturbances to public life demanding separate
statehood.
Formation of Telangana state in 2014[edit]
See also: Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014
On 30 July 2013, the Congress Working Committee unanimously passed a resolution to recommend
the formation of a separate Telangana state. After various stages the bill was placed in
the Parliament of India in February 2014.[31]
In February 2014, Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act,
2014 bill was passed by the Parliament of India for the formation of Telangana state comprising ten
districts from north-western Andhra Pradesh.[32]
The bill received the assent of the President and
published in the Gazette on 1 March 2014.[33]
The state of Telangana was officially formed on 2 June 2014. Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was
elected as the first chief minister of Telangana, following elections in which the Telangana Rashtra
Samithi party secured majority.[34]
Hyderabad will remain as the joint capital of both Telangana and
Andhra Pradesh for a period not more than 10 years after that period Hyderabad shall be the capital
of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra
Pradesh. [35]
Andhra Pradesh picked Amaravathi as its capital; moved its secretariat in 2016 and
legislature in March 2017 to its new capital.[36][37]

Telangana is situated on the Deccan Plateau, in the central stretch of the eastern seaboard of the
Indian Peninsula. It covers 114,840 square kilometres (44,340 sq mi). The region is drained by two
major rivers, with about 79% of the Godavari River catchment area and about 69% of the Krishna
River catchment area, but most of the land is arid.[4]
Telangana is also drained by several minor
rivers such as the Bhima, the Maner, the Manjira and the Musi.
The annual rainfall is between 900 and 1500 mm in northern Telangana and 700 to 900 mm in
southern Telangana, from the southwest monsoons. Various soil types abound, including chalkas,
red sandy soils, dubbas, deep red loamy soils, and very deep black cotton [clarification needed]
soils that
facilitate planting mangoes, oranges and flowers.[38]
Climate[edit]
Telangana is a semi-arid area and has a predominantly hot and dry climate. Summers start in
March, and peak in May with average high temperatures in the 42 °C (108 °F) range.
The monsoon arrives in June and lasts until September with about 755 mm (29.7 inches) of
precipitation. A dry, mild winter starts in late November and lasts until early February with little
humidity and average temperatures in the 22–23 °C (72–73 °F) range.
Ecology[edit]
The Central Deccan Plateau dry deciduous forests ecoregion covers much of the state, including
Hyderabad. The characteristic vegetation is woodlands of Hardwickia binata and Albizia amara.
Over 80% of the original forest cover has been cleared for agriculture, timber harvesting, or cattle
grazing, but large blocks of forest can be found in Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve and
elsewhere.[39]
The more humid Eastern Highlands moist deciduous forests cover the Eastern
Ghats in the eastern part of the state.
National Parks and Sanctuaries[edit]
Telangana has three National Parks: Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park in Hyderabad district,
and Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park and Mrugavani National Park in Ranga Reddy district.

Telangana is governed through a parliamentary system of representative democracy, a feature the
state shares with other Indian states. Universal suffrage is granted to residents. There are three
branches of government.
1. Executive authority is vested in the Council of Ministers headed by the Chief Minister,
although the titular head of government is the Governor. The Governor is the head of
state appointed by the President of India. The leader of the party or coalition with a majority
in the Legislative Assembly is appointed as the Chief Minister by the Governor, and the
Council of Ministers are appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister. The
Council of Ministers reports to the Legislative Assembly.
2. The legislature, the Telangana Legislative Assembly and the Telangana Legislative Council,
consists of elected members and special office bearers such as the Speaker and Deputy
Speaker, that are elected by the members. Assembly meetings are presided over by the
Speaker or the Deputy Speaker in the Speaker's absence. The Assembly is bicameral with
119 Members of the Legislative Assembly and 40 Member of the Legislative Council. Terms
of office run for 5 years, unless the Assembly is dissolved prior to the completion of the term.
The Legislative Council is a permanent body with one-third members retiring every two
years.
3. The judiciary is composed of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad and a system of
lower courts.
Auxiliary authorities known as panchayats, for which local body elections are regularly held, govern
local affairs. The state contributes seats to Lok Sabha.
The main players in the regional politics are the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, All India Majlis-e-
Ittehadul Muslimeen, Telugu Desam Party , Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress.
Following the Telangana Legislative Assembly Election in 2014, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi
under Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was elected to power.

Religion in Telangana[43]
Religion Percent
Hinduism   85.09%
Islam   12.68%
Christianity   1.3%
Others   0.9%
According to the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme 2009–10, There are 9 backward
districts (all except Hyderabad) from Telangana and the rest are from other regions.[44]
The religious makeup of Telangana is about 85.1% Hindu, 12.7% Muslim, and 1.3% Christian, and
0.9% others.[45][46]
Telugu and Urdu are the official languages of Telangana. About 77% of the population of Telangana
speak Telugu, 12% speak Urdu, and 13% speak other languages.[47][48]
Before 1948, Urdu was the
official language of Hyderabad State, and due to a lack of Telugu-language educational institutions,
Urdu was the language of the educated elite of Telangana. After 1948, once Hyderabad State joined
the new Republic of India, Telugu became the language of government, and as Telugu was
introduced as the medium of instruction in schools and colleges, the use of Urdu among non-
Muslims decreased.[49]
The Urdu spoken in Telangana is called Hyderabadi Urdu, which in itself is a
dialect of the larger Dakhini Urdu dialects of South India. Although the language is orally spoken by
most Hyderabadi Muslims, the language in a literary context has long been lost, and standard Urdu
is used.[50]
According to the 2011 census, Telangana's literacy rate is 66.46%. Male literacy and female literacy
are 74.95% and 57.92% respectively.[1]

Automobiles and auto components industry, spices, mines and minerals, textiles and
apparels, pharmaceutical, horticulture, poultry farming are the main industries in Telangana.[58]
In
terms of services, Hyderabad is usually nicknamed as Cyberabad due to its information technology
foray and location of major software industries in the city.[59][60]
Prior to secession, it contributed 15%
to India's and 98% to Andhra Pradesh's exports in IT and ITES sectors last 2013[61]
With Hyderabad
as in the front line of Telangana's aims to promote information technology in India, the city boasts
the HITEC City as its premier hub.
The state government is in the process of developing Industrial Parks at different places, for specific
groups of industries. The existing parks are Software Park at Hyderabad, HITEC City for software
units, Apparel Park at Gundlapochampalli, Export Promotion Park at Pashamylaram, Bio-technology
park at Turkapally.[citation needed]
Hyderabad is also a major site for healthcare related industries including hospitals and
pharmaceutical organizations such as Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences,Yashoda Hospitals,LV
Prasad Eye Care,Akruti Institute of cosmetic and plastic surgery,Fever Hospital,Durgabai

  • 52.  Career At 28-30%growth, Indian events industry could reach$10 billion in a 10 year horizon: Sudhanshu Vats Author | exchange4media News Service | Wednesday, Oct 19,2016 8:12 AM A+ AA A-
  • 53. The Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), India’ apex body of the events and experiential marketing industry hosted its eighth edition of EEMAX Global Conclave & Awards. At the event Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO, Viacom18 Media, was invited to speak on ‘A look into the future: Experiences in a Connected World. Technology, Infrastructure, Consumer engagement, emerging paradigm.’ He started with how he thinks of the events industry as a ‘sunrise industry’ and moved on its size. He put a number, “Indian (events) industry just turned Rs 5,800 crore to be precise (excluding price of rights). Sabbas Joseph quoted sometime back the size of New York’s event and entertainment industry which is close to $10-12 billion. This included certain ecosystem number. Having said that the disparity is high still.” Then he asked the important question, “What do we need to do?” “My view is that at 28-30 per cent growth, we could reach $10 billion in a 10 year horizon. It’s important because I think this is going to remain an industry which will grow fast. I want to make mention of four key areas where we can make an intervention if at all we aspire to reach $5-10 billion.” He started his first point with technology, “Within that there’s VR (virtual reality). It’s at that tipping point and will go mainstream. If that happens, this phenomena will dial up the industry to a whole different level. VR headsets are becoming affordable. The trial pieces are as inexpensive as Rs 200. VR headset, in my opinion, is largely taken care of. Then the smartphones are getting affordable and have more features, thanks to India and China. The third key piece for VR to go mainstream is data, both the data speed and data price. These are driven by 4G which is spearheaded by Jio. So with that coming around both data speed and data price are taken care of. With all of these in place, VR
  • 54. will go mainstream. This means if you do an event at one place, you could have 1000 or 100,000s’ experiencing it absolutely live. You dial up experiential entertainment to a different level. That’s just round the corner. It will happen. I am a fan of VR as well as AR (Augmented Reality). But the scope of latter is slightly less limited than VR. But then again it’s an important piece when it comes to live pieces. In some of the reality areas in TV there is room for AR.” He further added, “It is analytics drives ROI but data drives ROI. One of the key issues which has already been there with events within media and entertainment is the measurability of it. Can you measure it especially the advertisers? Advertising pie is growing. It’s close to Rs 55,000-60,000 crore across all mediums. But the events’ ability to get a substantial part of this pie is limited. That’s because of the measurability and the scale of the piece. In future with events, technology and social platforms and with the ability to put this data together the proposition (which we could have) for advertisers as we move forward is hugely compelling and the premiums they could command will be phenomenal.” Block-chain technology ‘which is being talked about in the financial world’ turns out to be his third piece. He confesses that it’s futuristic ‘but also around the corner.’ He explained how it is important to events, “My assessment is this technology will give a great opportunity for live events once again because block chain technology will enable artists much more. It can do is smart programming. It means when the person is performing you are able to do real time transmission of some of this piece along with encryption. The key is if you can get encryption going there real time. This is not really far, around five years away in my assessment. It also empowers the artist to a very large extent and takes away the role of intermediaries. Live business will always bring artistes together. An artist’s ability to get discovered and reach out to his/her target audience will get dialled up considerably. This technology has far reaching and arguably big thing coming up for us.” Lastly, he mentioned, “The fourth piece is the physical infrastructure in a country like India which can bring in global audiences. India does one of the biggest events. Look at Kumbh Mela. It’s an event which has the largest aggregation of human kind anywhere in the planet. The physical infrastructure with the ease of doing business should come together. There are so many events in India which have a large global curiosity and global audience available. Their ability to come here would be determined by physical infrastructure which will take time. But the good news is government is already working on roads and airports, amongst others. These things also need to get dialled up. This is a 10 year horizon.” Interestingly enough, he linked all the four points to tourism, “Media and entertainment as an industry per se on its own may look small in numbers. But the multiplier ability of media and entertainment as an industry and events
  • 55. particularly within that and its ability to dial up tourism are extremely high. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind along with tourism we could definitely get these billions and maybe more. If we get these four key pieces in place we would be able to get this done.” Tags: EEMAX Global Conclave | Sudhanshu Vats | VR | AR | blockchain technology Events and activation industry grown at 15% to INR 4,258 crore in 2014-15: EY Report Delhi, 08 April, 2015 Inside  News releases  PR contacts  PR activities  Analyst relations  Fact and figures
  • 56.  Published Editorials  Share  Organized events industry to grow to INR 5, 779 crores by 2016 – 17  Staff strength has increased from an average of 55 employees in 2011-12 to 84 employees in 2014-15 resulting in an increase in payroll costs from 13% to 18% of total costs  Margins are expected to decline from an average of 16% to 13% over the next two years mainly due to a growth in overall costs by 12%, and more particularly in payroll costs by 15%, as companies expect to increase their average headcount from 84 to 104 employees. The events and activations industry has grown at 15% annually from INR 2,800 crore in 2011-12 to INR 4,258 crore in 2014-15 according to an EY – EEMA (Event and Entertainment Management Association) report titled ‘Making experiences in India: The events and activations industry’. The report, released today, states that while managed events remain the largest service offering, IP (Intellectual Property) and digital events are growing at a faster rate than managed events. The key strengths of the industry remains its ability to get things done, and the ideation and efficiency with which it operates. That said, there is a need for the industry to work on acquiring the right talent, managing costs, demonstrating ROI to marketers and increasing transparency in operations. Ashish Pherwani, Partner and Media & Entertainment Advisory Leader, EY India says, “The events and activations industry holds great potential and this is evident from the considerable growth that the industry witnessed over the last few years. Our report aims to provide insights around key strengths of the industry and the challenges it faces. The report also looks into the opportunities for M&A transactions, implications around taxation and corporate governance.” Sabbas Joseph, President, Event and Entertainment Management Association says, “With a new government at the helm, there is a growing interest in the culture and people. The events and activations industry is best poised to capitalize on this opportunity and there is a crying need for a new world order - one in which event companies work along with government to create an events calendar that drives tourism and related industries.” According to the report, the events and activations industry is expected to grow to INR 5,779 crores by 2016-17. This growth will be on the back of marketers increasing their below the line (including digital) spends to 21% of their total marketing spends. The growth will also be led by personal events, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions), activations and sports. Non-metro markets are expected to increase in importance as marketers look to tier II and tier III cities for incremental growth, states the report. Digital events and activation is also expected to grow significantly on the back of smart phone penetration, internet availability and the cost efficiency of such campaigns for marketers. While the industry has reported very few M&A transactions over the last few years, there exists scope for consolidation. Valuations are driven by IPs owned, advertising agencies’ interest in activations, and digital events and sports leagues. On the taxation front, double taxation, taxation across multiple states, and varying and inconsistent application of different taxes are some of the challenges faced by the industry. Also, the introduction of Goods and Services tax could have a significant impact on the industry in terms of rates and implementation across multi-state activities.
  • 57. The report also states that the introduction of the new Companies Act, 2013, will result in some key changes in internal financial controls, compliance with more than 60 acts and regulations, and implementing a vigil mechanism to identify undesirable activities. EY also conducted a workshop with CEOs of the industry that resulted in Vision 20:20 for the industry’s future success. The industry needs to work towards the following initiatives:  Internal aspects: Improve the quality of talent through skill definition for various jobs, skill development, job security, compensation benchmarking and implementation of health and safety standards. The industry must build robust policies, processes and information systems to manage business efficiently and safely, and implement technology and automation.  External aspects: The industry needs to work on its positioning to marketers, build an account focus and demonstrate returns more effectively. There is a need to improve the supply chain by developing quality vendors, implementing a system of vendor accreditation and improving overall risk management. The regulatory ecosystem needs to be made more conducive by simplifying taxation, permissions and copyright issues.  Strategic aspects: The industry must build more IPs focused on defined communities of interest to marketers, and embrace the opportunity provided by marketers’ increasing spends on digital media. The report is based on the findings of a survey conducted via extensive discussion with over 60 respondents including the heads of events and activation companies across the country, along with inputs from advertisers and sponsors. - Ends - The Next Big Industry in India- SPORTS HOME The game is changing Sport is regarded as one of the largest industries globally in terms of employment and revenue. The Business of Sports is a multi-billion dollar global industry propelled by enormous consumer demand. The sports business means many different things to different people. This is a truly global industry, and sports stir up deep passion within spectators and players alike in countries around the world. But in past, it was just a loss-making affair in India. Now, sport is going to be the next big industry in India. In developed countries, sports contribute around 2 to 4 percentage of total employment. It includes a variety of career profiles such as athletes, coaches, trainers, event managers, public relation officers, Coordinator of sport organizations, Marketing Consultant, Program and Facility Manager,
  • 58. Professional Sport Promoter, Sport equipment and product sales, Sport Event Planner and Manager and Sport Sponsorship Specialist. Today, sport’s contribution to India’s total employment is just .05%. The great initiatives such as Indian Premier League (Cricket), Hockey India League, Indian Badminton League, Prokabbadi, Indian Super League (Football) and professionalization of Heritage sports events such as Goti, Gilli Danda, Lagori, Kilithatt, Gatta Gusthi are changing the old face of Indian sports. Once, we believed that only cricket will succeed in India. But the above mentioned initiatives have shown Indians, a world of sports beyond cricket. These initiatives prove that sports have a future in India as a business.
  • 59.
  • 60. The growth and development of the Indian sport industry is creating opportunities for management professionals in a wide variety of settings. Boosted by initiatives such as professional leagues of developed sports, commercialization of underdeveloped sports, professionalization of heritage sports and increased corporate sector investments, sports industry expects a faster growth in shorter time frame. It has the potential to overtake IT and related industries before 2020 in every aspect. The job opportunities above mentioned initiatives created and going to create are enormous. New sports initiatives require professional human capital to speed up its growth. But in India, availability of professional sports managers are less or minimal. Government of India takes initiatives to make India a sports super power. It will not be realized without professional sports managers. Indian sports industry has an impressive growth prospect even if its fundamentals are not solid. The professional sports managers can only bring a solid foundation to India’s sports industry. Sports Goods Industry in India The sports goods industry in India is nearly a century old and has flourished due to the skills of its workforce. Being labour-intensive in nature, the industry provides employment to more than 500,000 people. The nucleus of this industry in India is in and around the states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.  Jalandhar in the state of Punjab and Meerut in the state of Uttar Pradesh account for nearly 75 per cent of total production.  Together, the two towns house more than 3,000 manufacturing units and 130 exporters.  The Indian sports goods industry also has a presence in the cities of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, albeit at a lower scale. Exports – A Momentous Growth India’s share of the global sports goods export market is expected to grow manifold, with the country establishing the credibility of its goods in the international market. Indian sporting goods are well known around the world and have made a mark in the global sports goods market. The industry exports nearly 60 per cent of its total output to sports-loving people the world over.  The sports goods market in India was valued at US$ 2 billion in 2012-13. The market is growing as 35-40 per cent a year and is expected to reach US$ 3.6 billion by 2015. The growth is expected on account of increasing awareness about health and fitness in the country.  India exported sports goods worth around US$ 256 million in 2013-14 as compared to US$ 214.95 million in 2012-13 and registering a growth of about 19 per cent.  The major items to be exported during 2013-14 includes inflatable balls, cricket bats general exercise equipments, sports nets and protective equipment for cricket. The most interesting factor is that the land of Sports Engineering, United Kingdom is the major importer of Indian sports goods. It shows India’s ability to grow as a sporting super power. KERALA & SPORTS INDUSTRY Kerala is a major sporting state of India. But, the sports industry is not yet developed in Kerala. We have a great prospect in sport industry due to various factors like sports loving people, highly educated workforce, and availability of basic infrastructures like electricity and raw materials and scope of MSEs. If Kerala government can support sports industry like IT sector, Kerala can compete with Jalandar and Meerut in a big way. Moreover, the opportunities in sports never restrict to sports goods manufacturing. The following figure will illustrate the unexploited opportunities in sports industry.

  • 63. India has emerged as the leading international sourcing destination for inflatable balls and other sports goods for international brands such as Mitre, Lotto, Umbro and Wilson. SPORTS GOODS EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL The Sports Goods Export Promotion Council (SGEPC) promotes the export of sports goods and toys from India. SGEPC represents the leading 200 manufacturers and exporters of sports goods and toys in India. The global sports sector is estimated to be worth between $480-620 billion. However, in India, sport is yet tobe recognized as an economic sector, mainly due to the fact there has been little or no comprehensive study done on the industry’s size, potential, and on the available opportunities that are on offer. The sports industry sector may include several different segments such as sports tourism, sporting goods (in manufacturing and retail), sporting garments, and the available opportunities in sporting management and sponsorship. It is seen across the globe that sports as a full-fledged industry can and may contribute about 1 to 5 percent of the country’s GDP. However, a lack of sporting culture has held back the growth of a similar industry in India in the past, despite the growing awareness and interest in various different sports besides cricket. Hence, due to a lack of industry status along with a lack of sporting culture, corporate investments in India’s sports have traditionally been limited to only non-profit corporate social responsibility activities and initiatives, while the scope for exploring profit-related activities under the sports industry have not been explored in vast depth. ///////////////////////////////////.Telangana ( i /tɛlənˈɡɑːnə/) is one of the 29 states in India, located in southern India. Formed in June 2014 as the youngest state in India, from the northwestern part of the Joint State of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana has an area of 112,077 square kilometres (43,273 sq mi), and a population of 35,193,978 (2011 census).[3] It is the twelfth largest state in India, and the twelfth most populated state in India. Its major cities include Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar and Nizamabad. Telangana is bordered by the states of Maharashtra to the north and north west, Chhattisgarh to the north, Karnataka to the west and Andhra Pradesh to the east and south.[4] Telangana had a history as the Telugu-speaking region of the princely state of Hyderabad, ruled by the Nizam of Hyderabad.[5] It joined the Union of India in 1948. In 1956, the Hyderabad state was dissolved as part of the linguistic reorganisation of states and Telangana was merged with former Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. Following a movement for separation, Telangana was awarded separate statehood on 2 June 2014. Hyderabad will continue to serve as the joint capital city for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for no more than ten years.[6]

According to a Hindu legend, Shiva descended in the lingam form on three mountains, Kaleshwaram, Srisailam and Draksharama, which marked the boundaries of the Trilingadesa (Sanskrit: त्रित्रिङ्गदेश), later called Telinga, Telunga or Telugu.[8][9] The word "Telinga" changed over time to "Telangana" and the name "Telangana" was designated to distinguish the predominantly Telugu-speaking region of the erstwhile Hyderabad State from its predominantly Marathi-speaking one, Marathwada. After Asaf Jahis ceded the Seemandhra region to the British, the rest of the Telugu region retained the name Telingana and the other parts were called Madras Presidency's Circars and Ceded.[10] One of the earliest uses of a word similar to Telangana can also be seen in a name of Malik Maqbul (14th century CE), who was called the Tilangani, which implies that he was from Tilangana. He was the commander of the Warangal Fort (Kataka Pāludu).[11] History[edit] Main article: History of Telangana Telangana was governed by many rulers, including the Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE to 220 CE), the Kakatiya Dynasty (1083–1323), the Musunuri Nayaks (1326–1356) the Delhi Sultanate, the Bahmani Sultanate (1347–1512), Qutb Shahi dynasty (1512–1687), Mughal Empire (1687–1724) and Asaf Jahi Dynasty (1724–1948). Early history[edit] Main articles: Maurya Empire and Satavahana dynasty The Satavahana dynasty (230 BCE to 220 CE) became the dominant power in this region. It originated from the lands between the Godavari and Krishna rivers and was based at Amaravathi and Dharanikota.[12] After the decline of the Satavahanas, various dynasties, such as the Vakataka, Vishnukundina, Chalukya, Rashtrakuta and Western Chalukya, ruled the area.[13] Kakatiya Dynasty[edit] Main article: Kakatiya dynasty

The dynasty weakened with the attack of Malik Kafur in 1309 and was dissolved after the defeat of Prataparudra by the forces of Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1323.[14][15] Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi's[edit] Golkonda Fort
  • 67. Charminar in Hyderabad The area came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century, followed by the Bahmani Sultanate. Quli Qutb Mulk, a governor of Golkonda, revolted against the Bahmani Sultanate and established the Qutb Shahi dynasty in 1518. On 21 September 1687, the Golkonda Sultanate came under the rule of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after a year-long siege of the Golkonda fort.[16] In 1712, Qamar-ud-din Khan was appointed by emperor Farrukhsiyar as the viceroy of Deccan with the title Nizam-ul-Mulk (meaning "Administrator of the Realm"). He was later recalled to Delhi, with Mubariz Khan appointed as the viceroy. In 1724, Qamar-ud-din Khan defeated MubarizKhan to reclaim the Deccan suba, establishing it as an autonomous province of the Mughal empire. He took the name Asif Jah, starting what came to be known as the Asif Jahi dynasty.[13] He named the area Hyderabad Deccan. Subsequent rulers retained the title Nizam ul-Mulk and were called Asif Jahi nizams or nizams of Hyderabad. The Medak and Warangal divisions of Telangana were part of their realm.[17] When Asif Jah I died in 1748, there was political unrest due to contention for the throne among his sons, who were aided by opportunistic neighbouring states and colonial foreign forces. In 1769, Hyderabad city became the formal capital of the nizams. The nizam Nasir-ud-dawlah, Asaf Jah IV signed the Subsidiary Alliance with the British in 1799 and lost its control over the state's defence and foreign affairs. Hyderabad State became a princely state among the presidencies and provinces of British India.[17]
  • 68. Telangana was the seat of numerous dynasties. The Chowmahalla Palace was home to the Nizams of Hyderabad. Post-independence[edit] When India became independent from the British Empire in 1947, the Nizam of Hyderabad did not want to merge with the Indian Union and wanted to remain independent. The Government of India annexed Hyderabad State on 17 September 1948 after a military operation called Operation Polo.[13] It appointed a civil servant, M. K. Vellodi, as first chief minister of Hyderabad State on 26 January 1950.[18] He administered the state with the help of English-educated bureaucrats from the Madras and Bombay states, who were familiar with British systems of administration unlike the bureaucrats of Hyderabad state who used a completely different administrative system. The official language of the state was switched from Urdu to English. In 1952, Dr. Burgula Ramakrishna Rao was elected chief minister of the Hyderabad State in its first democratic election. During this time, there were violent agitations by some Telanganites to send the Madras state bureaucrats back and implement a rule by the natives (mulkis) of Hyderabad.[19] Telangana Rebellion[edit] Main article: Telangana Rebellion The Telangana Rebellion was a peasant revolt supported by the communists. It originated in the Telangana regions of the Hyderabad state between 1946 and 1951, led by the Communist Party of India (CPI).[20] The revolt began in the Nalgonda district against the feudal lords of Reddy and Velama castes. It quickly spread to the Warangal and Bidar districts. Peasant farmers and labourers revolted against the local feudal landlords (jagirdars and deshmukhs) and later against the Nizam Osman Ali Khan. The violent phase of the movement ended after the Government of India's Operation Polo.[21] Starting in 1951, the CPI shifted to a more moderate strategy of seeking to bring communism to India within the framework of Indian democracy.[22]
  • 69. States Reorganisation Commission[edit] In December 1953, the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) was appointed to form states on a linguistic basis.[23] An agreement was reached between Telangana leaders and Andhra leaders on 20 February 1956 to merge Telangana and Andhra with promises to safeguard Telangana's interests.[24] After reorganisation in 1956, the region of Telangana was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. Following this Gentlemen's agreement, the central government established the unified state of Andhra Pradesh on 1 November 1956.[25][26][27] G.O 553 of 1959 from the united Andhra Pradesh state moved two revenue divisions of Bhadrachalam from East Godavari and Aswaraopeta from West Godavari to Khammam for administrative convenience. Telangana movement[edit] Main article: Telangana movement There have been several movements to revoke the merger of Telangana and Andhra, major ones occurring in 1969, 1972 and 2009. The movement for a new state of Telangana gained momentum in the 21st century by an initiative of Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, the chief of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, on 29 November 2009.[28] On 9 December 2009 the Government of India announced the process of formation of the Telangana state. Violent protests led by people in the Coastal Andhra and Rayalseema regions occurred immediately after the announcement, and the decision was put on hold on 23 December 2009. The movement continued in Hyderabad and other districts of Telangana.[29] There have been hundreds of claimed suicides,[30] strikes, protests and disturbances to public life demanding separate statehood. Formation of Telangana state in 2014[edit] See also: Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 On 30 July 2013, the Congress Working Committee unanimously passed a resolution to recommend the formation of a separate Telangana state. After various stages the bill was placed in the Parliament of India in February 2014.[31] In February 2014, Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 bill was passed by the Parliament of India for the formation of Telangana state comprising ten districts from north-western Andhra Pradesh.[32] The bill received the assent of the President and published in the Gazette on 1 March 2014.[33] The state of Telangana was officially formed on 2 June 2014. Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was elected as the first chief minister of Telangana, following elections in which the Telangana Rashtra Samithi party secured majority.[34] Hyderabad will remain as the joint capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period not more than 10 years after that period Hyderabad shall be the capital of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra Pradesh. [35] Andhra Pradesh picked Amaravathi as its capital; moved its secretariat in 2016 and legislature in March 2017 to its new capital.[36][37] Geography[edit] See also: List of cities in Telangana

(July 2014) (Learn how and when to remove this template message) Telangana is governed through a parliamentary system of representative democracy, a feature the state shares with other Indian states. Universal suffrage is granted to residents. There are three branches of government. 1. Executive authority is vested in the Council of Ministers headed by the Chief Minister, although the titular head of government is the Governor. The Governor is the head of state appointed by the President of India. The leader of the party or coalition with a majority in the Legislative Assembly is appointed as the Chief Minister by the Governor, and the Council of Ministers are appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister. The Council of Ministers reports to the Legislative Assembly. 2. The legislature, the Telangana Legislative Assembly and the Telangana Legislative Council, consists of elected members and special office bearers such as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, that are elected by the members. Assembly meetings are presided over by the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker in the Speaker's absence. The Assembly is bicameral with 119 Members of the Legislative Assembly and 40 Member of the Legislative Council. Terms of office run for 5 years, unless the Assembly is dissolved prior to the completion of the term. The Legislative Council is a permanent body with one-third members retiring every two years. 3. The judiciary is composed of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad and a system of lower courts. Auxiliary authorities known as panchayats, for which local body elections are regularly held, govern local affairs. The state contributes seats to Lok Sabha. The main players in the regional politics are the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen, Telugu Desam Party , Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress. Following the Telangana Legislative Assembly Election in 2014, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi under Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was elected to power.
