Editor's Notes
Study in collegeBDS is like a condensed MBBS Course. The syllabus for the first 3 years is the same for both. Just that Dentistry is less in-depth wherein BDS students focus on the head, neck, chest, thorax [MBBS students learn about the limbs as well]
Subjects such as basic anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and microbiology are covered in the first two years. Some colleges will have a Dental specific subject in each year
2nd year – Pre clinical quota where you work on dummy teeth. When you are not doing too much damage to the teeth, then you are given an actual patient
3rd year – [Some colleges, like MBBS, start in 2nd year] onwards you start clinical work. You start with Oral Medicine Diagnosis and Radiology – simple silver fillings. Final year students are given deep cavities to fill. 3rd year students get shallow ones. At each level you are getting things approved by your senior.
In the 4th year you start specialty – there are currently 8 in India. More being added. [Implantology also being added. Deemed universities make their own subjects. Order in which you study subjects could vary – non clinical for 6 months and clinical for 6 months]
Prosthodontics – specialises in the replacement of missing teeth and the restoration of natural teeth. Treat facial deformities
Periodontics – diagnosing, preventing and treating gum disease. Periodontists can also place dental implants as well as perform cosmetic periodontal treatments.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – trained to treat and diagnose defects, injuries and diseases of the mouth, jaw, teeth, neck, gums and other soft tissues of the head.
