11. An ongoing list of brilliant murals and transformed public
spaces throughout Philadelphia are the final products of
year-round Porch Light workshops, community meetings,
health forums, and paint days. A finished Porch Light
artwork shines a light on the people who helped bring the
project to life and challenges social stigmas around
mental and behavioral health, offering a fresh window of
opportunity for continued progress and community growth.

finding out through interviews and observations what is
there both physically and socially. With this they
construct a narrative for the area that is led not by the
desire for commercial development but is instead a
powerful and very specific story to convince people of
the potential of the area.

20. I Am Here was initiated by artists who are themselves
long-term residents of Samuel House. Through their open
windows, facing on to the canal, they often overheard
passersby speculating on reasons for the buildings
demise and its current state. The installation aims to
disturb this one-way interrogation by replacing the 67
bright orange boards with large-scale photographs of
residents on the estate: onlookers no longer stand
unchallenged, as their gaze is met and returned by a
multitude of faces consisting of current and former
residents on the estate. Thus the project literally
