Goal of this talk is to introduce you to:
The overall Sitecore e-commerce strategy
Sitecore Commerce Connect
What a Commerce Connect platform can do
Which Commerce Connect platforms exist
And when to use them
Why should you listen to me?
14 years in e-commerce
10 years as a consultant
Founder of uCommerce
Close working relationship with Sitecore
SEGWAY
Before we begin
Let me tell you the story about how we got started with Sitecore
I call it….
The story about Sitecore asking us to integrate with them and then acquiring Commerce Server
The good news for us is that Sitecore chose a wise approach to doing e-commerce
One size does not fit all
Sitecore’s strategy is pretty similar to naval warfare
You need different types of ships to fight the battles
Many classes of ships, each with their own purpose
Ship of the line fights in the main naval engagements – in the line
Frigate is used in multiple different roles when fast maneuvering is required and for intercepting of ships
You can’t fight a battle with just one class of ship you need different ones
Same thing is true for e-commere
There are many different types of online stores
Each with their own needs

You need a certain type of ship to perform a certain type of function in a battle.
Same thing goes e-commerce platforms.
They are not all created equal,
Different solutions require different platforms.
The technology to enable this is called Sitecore Commerce Connect
SEGWAY
But before we dive into the technology, let’s talk about a related topic…
Before we talk about technology, let’s talk naval warfare some more
In the mid 17th century the Line of Battle first came into use
Compared to earlier when individual ships engagement each other willy nilly, it had the major advantages of:
Maximize firepower of the broadside
Avoid friendly fire
By 1675, this naval tactic was in wide use in naval engagements
So how does this relate to Commerce Connect?
Think of CC as the line, the tactic if you will
Individual commerce platforms slot into the line
They each play their role in battle against other platforms like Adobe, EpiServer, etc.
And we avoid friendly fire, because everybody has a different position in the line

Remember we need different ships to fight the battle?
Let’s take a look at which ships the Sitecore platform has to offer
I want to give you a chart by which to navigate the high seas of commerce
We’ll slot each of the commerce connect platforms in
To ultimately enable you to pick the right platform for the job
Need to modify the map a bit to suit our needs

Ship of the line
"The heaviest of warships used in the line. Typically the battle was won by whatever side had the heaviest ships with the most guns“
Lots of firepower
Large size
Difficult to manoeuvre
Requires more hands to operate
HMS Terror
"Bomb vessels were highly specialized and expensive to fit out and maintain, and only marginally suited for their secondary role as cruisers.“
Specialized for bombarding stationary targets on land.
Targeted at a narrow audience - B2C, brick and mortar retailers
Requires AX for Retail
Enterprise level because of the investments required
Use it if
- you are a Sitecore and Dynamic AX for Retail partner
- if the clent operates brick and mortar stores and wants a piece of online
- if the client already has AX or is willing to invest
Thomas Larson - transport ship - 7 masted schooner
Used mainly for the purpose of hauling coal and oil by the Eastern coast of the United States
B2B is important, as is the transport of coal
B2B, unsexy, complex
Use if:
Client is enterprise
Client is traditional B2B
You need complex price matrices
You need distributed user management
Frigate
“In the 17th century, the term was used for any warship built for speed and maneuverability, the description often used being "frigate-built“
uCommerce is like that: Fast and agile. Usable in many different situations.
Use if
- Client is SMB
- You need fast time to market
- Ability to extend anything and everything
- Integration with LOB system via uConnector
With that thank you for your attention
