3. COLLABORATIVE ONLINE INTERNATIONAL
LEARNING
(PART 1)
• Students work together to create a group résumé that
captures what characterizes the people and traditions
in each country. Students from Chile and Peru must
write 2-3 questions for the students abroad, in
advance, which must be approved by the teacher.
These are added to at least 3 of the pre-established
questions on the next slide. These questions must be
asked when meeting the international students in
groups.
4. COIL PRE-ESTABLISHED QUESTIONS (1)
Small talk questions:
• What is the most popular local food in your country? In
your city?
• What is your city known for? Why?
• What is the best thing about your town?
• What is the worst thing about your town?
• What do you know about Peru/Chile?
• What type of music do young people listen to in
Peru/Chile?
5. COIL PRE-ESTABLISHED QUESTIONS (2)
Critical thinking questions:
• What should the world know about Peru/Chile?
• What social sector needs improvement in your
country? Why?
• What makes you proud about Peruvian/Chilean
culture?
• What aspect of learning and speaking English would
you say is the hardest for you?
• What aspect of learning English do you like or find
6. COLLABORATIVE ONLINE INTERNATIONAL
LEARNING
(PART 2)
• The second meeting involves students setting up a
video to resemble a talk show and -after having
rehearsed the interaction beforehand- they will record
a video (their final assignment), containing the
intercultural interview. The script must be analysed by
students to identify where strong and weak forms
occur, as well as to mark all -s and -ed endings.
7. FINAL COIL ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS
• Students must record themselves, hand in the script
including a phonemic transcription of ONLY strong
and weak forms & suffixes -s and -ed in their
interview.
• Students will also make an effort to create a set-up
that resembles a live online interview broadcast.
Points are given for creativity.
8. 1ST MEETING BETWEEN STUDENTS FROM CHILE/PERU
• 1. Students get their international classmates’ emails and contact them via
email to agree on a time and day to meet for the interview with pre-selected
questions. They must algo agree on a platform to meet, preferably Microsoft
Teams. The online meeting where students interview one another must be
recorded and emailed to the instructor as evidence that the interview has
been conducted.
• 2. The questions are culturally related and will be provided by the instructor
(see set of questions above). After reviewing them, each group of students
must write 2-3 more questions about what they would like to know about
their classmates abroad, e.g., phonetical traits, customs, and traditions.
9. COIL CLASS – CHILE & PERU
• A lecture will be held at a time ideal for both countries to meet
simultaneously (Wednesday, May 18th at 9:30 a.m.).
• In this lecture, the instructions for the final COIL assignment will be
given in terms of how to incorporate the theory and concepts
reviewed in the COIL class into the collaborative assignment.
10. 2ND MEETING BETWEEN STUDENTS FROM CHILE/PERU
• Students agree on a time to meet once more, only this time they will have to
record themselves interviewing one another in the form of an online talk
show. The questions from the first meeting must be reviewed, translated if
necessary, and edited in advance. Students must exchange these questions
before the second meeting so both sides can rehearse and prepare for the
interview that this time will be done entirely in English. Each interview should
last no more than 5 minutes and should include between 4-5 questions.
• Students will have to incorporate the contents covered during the COIL class
into the assignment, i.e. they will focus on strong and weak forms & the
correct pronunciation of the –s and –ed endings.
