0.6", and wider by 0.3”
The weight savings, with increased engine
output (+35 hp on 540i models), has resulted
in faster (0-60 mph) times by up to 7/10ths
of a
second (2017 540xi Sedan vs. 2016 535xi
Sedan ).
4. Improved Steering
All 5 Series models now feature an electromechanical power steering system (hydraulic in F10
xDrive models) with variable steering ratio and speed-sensitive power assistance. The system
has been completely re-tuned for the all-new 5 Series which, in combination with
improvements to the architecture of the lightweight Double-wishbone front suspension and
five-link rear suspension, delivers excellent steering feel with clear road feedback.
Available Dynamic Damper Control with Adaptive mode
Vehicles equipped with Dynamic Damper Control receive a new Adaptive mode button that
has been integrated into the Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch on the center console.
When selected, the vehicle immediately begins learning the driver's tendencies by measuring
accelerator pedal, shifting, and steering movements. Vehicle dynamics will then change to
optimally match the driving style by adjusting the Dynamic Damper Control, Electric power
steering, and transmission character.
5. New engine family with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology
All members of the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics engine family feature an extremely lightweight,
thermodynamically optimized all-aluminum construction. The gasoline units employ twin-scroll turbocharging, High
Precision Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing.

Transmission
All 5 Series models come standard with an 8-speed STEPTRONIC Sport automatic transmission including steering
wheel-mounted shift paddles.

7. Exterior Design
Standard Sport design, available Luxury & M Sport Packages
Many of the design elements you may be familiar with from Sport Line, are now standard equipment on the
2017 5 Series Sedan. This includes the following in high-gloss black: kidney grille slats, front and rear bumper
trim finishers, and B-pillar. The window surround and Air breather cover are finished in high-gloss chrome,
while tailpipes are finished in black chrome. On the interior, standard 16-way electrically adjustable Sport
seats including power adjustable side bolsters, and an Anthracite headliner.
As an alternative to the standard Sport design elements, customers looking for a more elegant exterior design,
featuring high-gloss chrome exterior trim finishers and tailpipes, can opt for the Luxury Package, which
additionally includes a SensaTec upholstered dashboard.
The ever-popular M Sport Package, available from launch, features a more aggressively-designed
aerodynamic kit, Shadowline exterior trim, lowered M Sport suspension, 19” M Double-spoke wheels (+1”), M
steering wheel, aluminum pedal covers and footrest, and a SensaTec upholstered dashboard.
All 5 Series models also now come with tailpipes on both sides. Depending on the engine and exterior design
package ordered, the tailpipes will be circular (530i models) or trapezoidal (540i models and all models
equipped with M Sport Package).

13. Interior Highlights
Multi-contour seats with touch-sensitive controls, available Ventilation and Massage
In addition to the standard 16-way electrically adjustable Sport seats, the available 20-way adjustable Multi-contour seats
for the driver and passenger can be equipped with ventilation and massage. Eight different massage programs, each with a
choice of three intensity modes, relax the muscles in the back and relieve the strain on the spine while driving.
Another enhancement is the ability to set temperature thresholds for activating the seat heating and seat ventilation, as
well as the steering wheel heating – a convenient feature that starts heating or ventilation automatically when the
temperature falls below or rises above the respective limit.
The Multi-contour seats also include new seat adjustment switches with touch-sensitive sensors. Touching the switch
located on the outside edge of the seat illustrates a matching animation in the display.
