The First Naval Commander of the Ottoman Empire
Commandership: 1321-1324
He is the first beg of the Ottoman State as a sailor. He
captured Karamürsel and Yalova in order to block the
movements of the Byzantines and established the first
Ottoman dockyard in Karamürsel. His tomb is in
Kocaeli/Karamürsel.

Beyliği: 1081-1096
Anadolu Türklerinin ilk donanmasını inşa ettirmiştir. Adalar
Denizi’nin stratejik noktalarından Midilli, Sakız, Sisam ve
Rodos adalarını Türk topraklarına katarak, güçlü bir Türk
Donanması’nın bölgedeki faaliyetleriyle tarihin akışını
değiştirebileceğini kanıtlamıştır. Sayıca üstün Bizans
Donanması’nı yenilgiye uğrattığı 19 Mayıs 1090 Koyun
Adaları Zaferi, Türk Deniz Kuvvetlerinin kuruluş tarihi
olarak kabul edilmiştir. Mezarı Çeşme’dedir.

The First Naval Commander of the Turks
Commandership: 1081-1096
He had the first fleet of the Anatolian Turks constructed. He
captured some of the strategic points such as Lesbos, Chios,
Samos and Rhodes Islands in the Aegean Sea and proved
that a powerful Turkish fleet could change history through
the operations performed in the region. He defeated the
Byzantines and gained a victory in the Battle of Oinousses
on 19 May 1090 and this date was accepted as the
foundation date of the Turkish Naval Forces. His tomb is in
Çeşme.

Hükümdarlığı/Beyliği: 1334-1348
İzmir’i Cenovalılardan almıştır. Adalar Denizi üzerinde kesin
egemenlik kurmuştur. Büyük bir deniz kuvveti oluşturarak
Haçlı donanmalarına karşı mücadeleler vermiş, Korint
Kıstağı’nı geçerek Adriyatik’e kadar akınlar düzenlemiştir.
Adalar Denizi Anadolu Türkleri tarafından ilk kez geçilmiştir.

“GHAZI UMUR BEY, ADMIRAL”

The Ruler of Aydınoğulları
Reign: 1334-1348
He captured İzmir from the Genoese. He had an absolute
dominion over the Aegean Sea. Having organized a
powerful naval force, he struggled against the Crusaders,
passed through the Isthmus of Corinth and carried out
invasions to the Adriatic Sea. The Aegean Sea was passed
for the first time by the Turks. His tomb is in Ödemiş/Birgi.
5. “KAPTAN-I DERYA VE CEZAYİR BEYLERBEYİ GAZİ HIZIR
HAYREDDİN (BARBAROS) PAŞA”

Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: 1534-1546
Hızır Reis (Barbaros) ve kardeşi, 1515 yılında Cezayir
Devleti’ni kurmuşlardır. 1519 yılında bu bölgede,
İspanyollara karşı savaşmak üzere Yavuz Sultan Selim
tarafından gönderilen yardımcı kuvvetlerle birlikte,
Barbaros’a beylerbeyi ünvanı da verilmiş ve böylece Cezayir
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu topraklarına katılmıştır. 1534
yılında Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın kendisine verdiği
beylerbeyliği rütbesiyle kaptan-ı derya olmuş, 27 Eylül 1538
tarihinde Haçlı Donanması’nı Preveze Deniz Savaşı’nda ağır
bir yenilgiye uğratmış, Akdeniz’i bir Türk gölü haline
getirmiştir. Türbesi Beşiktaş’tadır.
“GHAZI HIZIR HAYREDDİN BARBAROS PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-
CHIEF AND GOVERNOR OF ALGERIA”
(Birth : 1467 Death : 1546)
Admiral-in-Chief: 1534-1546
Hızır Reis (Barbaros) and his brother established the
Algerian State in 1515. In order to fight against the Spanish,
supporting forces were sent to the region by Sultan Selim I
in 1519 and Barbaros was given the rank governor. Thus,
Algeria was annexed into the Ottoman territories. In 1534,
he was given the rank governor by Süleyman the
Magnificent and appointed as Admiral-in-Chief. On 27
September 1538, he defeated the Crusaders in the Battle of
Preveza and secured Ottoman dominance over the
Mediterranean. His tomb is in Beşiktaş.
9. “BÜYÜK TÜRK DENİZCİSİ VE KARTOGRAFYA BİLGİNİ
PİRİ REİS”

Hint Kaptanlığı: 1547-1552
16.yüzyıl dünya pozitif bilim tarihinin önemli
şahsiyetlerinden biri olan Türk amirali, coğrafya ve
kartoğrafya bilginidir. Büyük eseri “Bahriye”nin yanı sıra
Amerika Kıtası ve Atlas Okyanusu’nu gösteren 1513 ve 1528
haritalarıyla da büyük ün kazanmıştır. 1547 yılında Hint
Kaptanlığı’na atanıp Kızıldeniz, Basra Körfezi ve Umman
Denizi’nde deniz harekatı icra etmiştir. 1551 yılındaki
Hürmüz Harekatı’ndan dolayı haksız yere suçlanarak
başarısız sayılmış ve Kahire’de idam edilmiştir.
“PİRİ REİS, GREAT TURKISH SAILOR AND CARTOGRAPHER”
(Birth : 1470? Death : 1552)
Commandership in the Indian Ocean: 1547-1552
He is a Turkish admiral who is one of the important figures
of the history of positive sciences in the 16th century a
scholar in geography and a cartographer. Besides his great
work “Bahriye” (Book of Navigation), he is also famous
with the maps dated 1513 and 1528. These maps depict
the American Continent and the Atlantic Ocean, In 1547 he
was appointed as the Admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the
Indian Ocean and conducted naval operations in the Red
Sea, Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. Owing to the operation
conducted in Hormuz in 1551, he was accused unjustly and
executed in Cairo.
10. “KAPTAN-I DERYA VEZİR PİYALE PAŞA”

Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: 1554-1568
Sarayda yetişmiş ve Türk deniz siyasetine yön veren
amirallerden biridir. Üstün yeteneklerinden dolayı Gelibolu
Sancak Beyi olarak atandığı derya kaptanlığı süresince
Akdeniz’deki Türk deniz egemenliğini başarıyla sürdürmüş,
özellikle Balear Adaları başarısıyla beylerbeyliğine
(paşalığa) yükseltilmiştir. 14 Mayıs 1560 tarihinde Cerbe
Deniz Savaşı’nda 200 parçalık güçlü Haçlı Donanması’na
karşı 86 parçalık bir donanma ile zafer kazanmıştır.
Batılılarda Türklerin denizlerde artık yenilmez bir güç
olduğu kanısını yerleştirmiştir. Mezarı Kasımpaşa’dadır.
“PİYALE PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-CHIEF, VIZIER”
(Birth : 1515 Death : 1578)

He is one of the admirals who were grown up in the palace
and gave direction to the Turkish maritime politics. Thanks
to his superior abilities, he was appointed as the Province
Governor of Gelibolu. Throughout his admiralty, he
maintained Ottoman dominance over the Mediterranean
and he was promoted to governer (pasha) after his
achievements he gained in the Balearic Islands. On 14 May
1560, he gained a victory in the Battle of Djerba with a fleet
consisting of 86 ships against the powerful fleet of the
Crusaders consisting of 200 ships. The Westerners began to
consider the Turks as the invincible power in the sea. His
tomb is in Kasımpaşa.
11. “TRABLUSGARP BEYLERBEYİ TURGUT REİS”

Beylerbeyliği: 1554-1565
Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa’nın “Turgudca benden yeğdir”
dediği Batılıların “Dragut” ismiyle bildikleri ünlü Türk
denizcisidir. Barbaros Hızır Hayrettin Paşa ile birlikte
katıldığı Preveze Savaşı’nda komuta ettiği levent filosuyla
ün kazanmıştır.1540 yılında İspanyol Armadası’nın yaptığı
baskında üç yıl esir kalmış, ancak Barbaros’un yaptığı akınla
esaretten kurtulabilmiştir. 1560 yılında Piyale Paşa
komutasındaki Cerbe Savaşı’nda, adayı Osmanlı
toprakları’na katmış, Malta Kuşatması’nda hayatını
kaybetmiştir. Türbesi Libya/Trablusgarp ‘tadır.
“TURGUT REİS, GOVERNOR OF TRIPOLI”
(Birth : ? Death : 1565)
Governorship: 1554-1565
He is a famous Turkish sailor who was called “Dragut” by
the Westerners. He became famous with the fleet which he
commanded during the Battle of Preveza with the fleet of
Barbaros Hızır Hayrettin Pasha. In 1540, he was captured in
a raid conducted by the Spanish Armada and imprisoned
for three years. However, he was released due to the
invasion launched by Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha. During the
Battle of Djerba under the command of Piyale Pasha in
1560, he annexed the island into the Ottoman territories
and lost his life during the siege of Malta. His tomb is in
Libya/Tripoli.
12. “KAPTAN-I DERYA KILIÇ ALİ PAŞA”
(D. : 1507 Ö. : 1587)
Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: 1571-1587
Büyük Türk deniz komutanlarından olup Cezayir Beylerbeyi
iken Tunus’u İspanyollardan almıştır. 1571 yılında sol kanat
komutanı olarak İnebahtı Savaşı’na katılan fakat mağlup
olan Osmanlı Donanması’ndan kendi gemilerini kurtararak
İstanbul’a getirmiştir. Bu olaydan sonra “Uluç” olan lakabı
“Kılıç” a çevrilmiş, kaptan-ı deryalığa atanmıştır. 4 aylık kış
mevsimi boyunca 150 parçalık bir donanma inşa ettirerek
Akdeniz’de, kendisinden sonra uzun yıllar daha sürecek
Türk deniz egemenliğinin temellerini atmıştır. Türbesi
Tophane’dedir.
“KILIÇ ALİ PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-CHIEF”
(Birth : 1507 Death : 1587)
Commandership: 1571-1587
He is one of the great Turkish commanders. When he was
the Governor of Algeria, he captured Tunisia from the
Spanish. In 1571 he joined in the Battle of Lepanto as the
commander of the left flank and when the Ottoman defeat
became obvious, he succeeded in extricating his ships and
gathered up them in İstanbul. Then he was given the
honorary title Kılıç “sword” and appointed as Admiral-in-
Chief. He constructed a fleet consisting of 150 ships within
4 months in winter and laid the foundations of Turkish
dominance over the Mediterranean which would continue
for more years after him. His tomb is in Tophane.
13. “KAPTAN-I DERYA VEZİR GAZİ HACI HÜSEYİN PAŞA”

Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: I. defa: 1690 (bir ay) II. defa: 1695-1701
Gençliğinde bir savaşta ağır yaralanıp öldü sanılarak terk
edilmesinden sonra iyileşmesi üzerine “yarı ölü (mezzomorto)”
anlamına gelen “Mezemorta” lakabıyla anılmıştır. Cezayir
Beylerbeyliği’nden, atandığı kaptanı deryalığa zamanında gelemediği
için Tuna Kaptanlığı’na verilmiştir. 1695 yılında kalyonlar kaptanı
olarak katıldığı II. Koyun Adaları Deniz Savaşı’nda Venedik
Donanması’nı yenmesi üzerine yeniden kaptan-ı deryalığa
getirilmiştir. Kurduğu ilk kalyon filosu ile uzak mesafeden top ateşine
dayanarak Venediklilerle yapılan savaşları kazanmış ve deniz
savaşlarında topçuluğun önemini ispatlamıştır. Düzenlediği “Bahriye
Kanunnamesi” ile Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri’ne yeni bir düzen vermiştir.

“GHAZI HAJJI HÜSEYİN PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-CHIEF, VIZIER”
(Mezzomorto)”
(Birth : ? Death : 1701)

He acquired his epithet mezzomorto which means “half-dead” during
a fight he was gravely injured, When he was Governor of Algeria, he
was appointed as Admiral-in-Chief, but since he was late for that
mission he became the commander of the fleet of the Danube. He
joined in the Battle of Oinousses II as the galleon captain in 1695 and
defeated the Venetians. Then he was promoted to Admiral-in-Chief
again. He constructed the first galleon fleet and gained victories
against the Venetians in the wars which were fought based on
gunfires at distant rate. Thus, he proved the significance of gunnery
in naval battles. He carried out reforms in the navy and his reforms
were compiled into a book, Bahriye Kanunnamesi (The Navy Code of
Laws). By means of this book,he put. His tomb is in Rodos Island.
14. “KAPTAN-I DERYA GAZİ HASAN PAŞA”
(Cezayirli)

Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: I. dönem: 1770-1774 II. dönem: 1774-1789
Tilimsan Sancak Beyi iken Cezayir’den ayrılarak Osmanlı
Donanması’na kaptan olarak girmiştir. Çeşme felaketinin ardından
devlet donanmasız kalmasına rağmen, Limni Adası’nı Ruslardan
kurtararak kaptanı deryalığa atanmıştır.1773 yılında “Mekteb-i
Bahriye”yi açmış, kalyoncu kışlasını kurmuştur.Batılılara yeni gemiler
inşa ettirerek Deniz Kuvvetleri’nin ileri düzeye çıkması için çaba
göstermiştir. 20 Nisan 1789 tarihinde kara cephesine gönderilmiş,
Tabak Köprüsü Savaşı’nda Rusları yendiği için 3 Aralık 1789 tarihinde
sadrazamlığa terfi etmiştir. Mezarı Bulgaristan/Şumnu’dadır.
“GHAZI HASAN PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-CHIEF”
(The Algerian)
(Birth : 1713 Death : 1790)

When he was the Province Governor of Tlemcen, he left Algeria and
joined in the Ottoman fleet as a captain. Although the Ottoman fleet
scattered after the disastrous battle in Chesma, he was able to take
Limni (Lemnos) from the Russiansand promoted to Admiral-in-Chief.
In 1773, he opened the Naval High School and established the Naval
Engineering Golden Horn Shipyard. He had the Westerners
constructed new ships and struggled for the development of the
Naval Forces. He commanded the Turkish troops on 20 April 1789
and was promoted to grand vizier on 3 December 1789 after he
defeated the Russians in the War of Tabak Köprüsü. His tomb is in
Shumen/Bulgaria.
15. “KAPTAN-I DERYA TAHİR MEHMET PAŞA”
(Çengeloğlu)

Kaptan-ı Deryalığı: I. dönem: 1832-1836 II. dönem: 1841-1843
Denizcilikten yetişmiş olup, Mısır ve Cezayir filolarında uzun süre
leventlik ve kalyon kaptanlığı yaptıktan sonra 1821 yılında Osmanlı
Donanması’nda riyale daha sonra patrona olmuştur. 1827 yılında
Mora Ayaklanması’nı bastırmak üzere Navarin Limanı’nda
bulunurken İngilis-Fransız-Rus bağlaşık filosunun baskınına uğrayarak
tüm gayretlerine rağmen filosunun yarısını kaybetmiştir. 1832 yılında
kaptan-ı deryalığa atanarak yeni gemi yapımı ve donanmanın ıslah
edilmesi için çalışmış, yakılmış olan Osmanlı Donanması’nı yeniden
kurmayı başarmış bir komutandır. Mezarı Eyüp Sultan’dadır.
“TAHİR MEHMET PASHA, ADMIRAL-IN-CHIEF”

After being levent (sailor) and galleon captain in the fleets of Egypt
and Algeria for long years, he became commodore in the Ottoman
navy in 1821. Later, he became vice amiral. When he was in
Navarino Harbor in 1827, he was raided by the Allied force of British,
French and Russian vessels. Despite his great efforts, he lost half
ofhis fleet. In 1832, he was promoted to Admiral-in-Chief and
endeavored to construct ships and reform the Ottoman fleet. He was
also a great commander who was able to achieve to reconstruct the
Ottoman fleet which had been burnt. His tomb is in Eyüb Sultan.
16. “BAHRİYE NAZIRI MİRALAY HÜSEYİN RAUF (ORBAY)”

Bahriye Nazırlığı: 14.10.1918-23.11.1918
Çağının iyi eğitim görmüş değerli deniz subaylarındandır.
Ününü Balkan Savaşları’nda Hamidiye Kruvazörü ile
Akdeniz’de yaptığı akınlarla kazanmıştır. Kurtuluş Savaşı’na
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’ün yakın arkadaşı olarak katılmış ve
Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi Hükümeti’nin de başkanı
olmuştur. 1942 yılında II. Dünya Savaşı’nın en kritik
döneminde Türkiye’nin Londra Büyükelçiliği görevini
üstlenmiştir. Mezarı Erenköy’dedir.
“COLONEL HÜSEYİN RAUF (ORBAY), MINISTER OF NAVY”
(Birth : 1881 Death : 1964)

He was one of the well educated naval officers of his era.
He achieved his fame for his raids he conducted in the
Black Sea and the Mediterranean as the captain of the
Cruiser Hamidiye during the Balkan Wars. He joined in the
War of Independence as the best friend of Mustafa Kemal
Atatürk and became the Prime Minister of the Grand
National Assembly of Turkey. In 1942, during the most
critical period of the World War II, he was the Turkish
ambassador in London. His tomb is in Erenköy.
