Villages in Bahrain consist mainly of flat, concrete or stone houses, though some fishermen and poor families still live in huts made of palm branches. While much of the country is a bare desert, this area has great fertility. Over a third of the population lives in the largest cities, Manama and Al-Muḥarraq.
