2. Research Question
How effective the Ohio University
orientation program is in terms of
meeting international graduate
student academic and social
needs?
4. Why qualitative interviewing?
Rubin and Rubin 2012 state that
qualitative interview enables us to see what is
hidden and examine what is obvious … it is a
gate to understand the world … it addresses
the problems in its naturalistic status … (Rubin
and Rubin, 2012)
5. Why qualitative interviewing?
In his book How to Use Qualitative
Research Methods in Evaluation, Patton
claimed that in-depth intensive interviewing is a
leading path by which qualitative evaluators
inquire for better insight of how people interact,
feel, and understand (Patton,1987).
6. Three types of interview
Structured : Patton (1987) called the structured interview the
interview guide that simply serves as checklist of topics the
interviewer prepared in advance in order to investigate about
during the interview (Patton, 1987).
Semi-structured: Wengraf ( 2001) stated that this type
consists of number of prepared questions that are designed to
be sufficiently open-ended …
Unstructured: Kvale and Brinkman (2009) named it
unstandardized because of the absence of the preparation
procedures that happen in the other types (Kavale & Brinkman,
2009).
7. Interview Questions
Do you think orientation program is important for
international students? If yes please explain.
Can you describe the activities were involved in the
orientation program?
“Yeah exactly!! It was not like I thought it would be…”
What was your expectation or thoughts?
8. Interviews
Two of them was in a quite area at Baker Center ,
and the other one was here in McCracken
Interviewees were the ones who chose the place and
time.
I used an app that in my Ipad to record the interviews
and I transcribed them the next day.
