Hristo Botev was a Bulgarian poet and revolutionary who was killed fighting against the Ottoman Empire in 1876. He was born in 1847 in Veliko Turnovo and began publishing poems in newspapers in the 1860s. Considered one of Bulgaria's national heroes, Botev was killed near the Bansko Pass while organizing an uprising against Ottoman rule.
