2. What is CEDAW?
▶ It was an international treaty that was adopted in
1979 by the United Nations General Assembly.
▶ It talks about women's rights
▶ Points out all constitutes on discrimination against
women.
▶ This idea sets up an agenda for national action to
end such discrimination.
3. Build Up Information:
▶ The convention was signed on 18 December 1979
▶ It’s headquarter is located in New York City
▶ This became effective from 3 September 1981
▶ The treaty was written in Chinese, English, French,
Russian and Spanish.
4. To Do List:
▶ Convention on the elimination of all forms of
discrimination against women and making it a global
concern.
▶ It’s main aspect to give people realization about the
equality between men and women.
▶ This idea try to ensure the basic rights and national,
political and personal rights of an woman.
▶ It treat reproductive rights of women and targets
traditional influences.
5. Characteristics:
▶ Include the principles of gender equality, repeal all
discriminatory laws and accept the right to prohibit
discrimination against women.
▶ In order to ensure the effective protection of women
against discrimination, courts and other public
authorities must be established.
▶ Ensure that all forms of discrimination against
women are eliminated by individual organizations.
6. Terms & Condition:
▶ The convention has a similar format to the idea of
convention on the elimination of all forms of racial
discrimination.
▶ The convention has six parts
▶ It conveys almost 30 articles total.
▶ It clearly declares the do and don’t about women
treatment and about their rights.
7. Misunderstandings
Social and religious conservatives misunderstanding
the convention.
▶ Detriment of social values by imposing feminist,
liberal, progressive ideas.
▶ Skepticism about CEDAW’s actual goal. Thinking it
adheres to weak liberal feminism.
8. Conclusion
The aim of CEDAW is to eradicate the gender
discrimination completely. Currently there are some
disagreements and some misunderstandings about
the articles and the convention as a whole. But all
these needs to be solved to attain a society where a
person’s gender doesn’t specify what type of
treatment they get.
