Boolean Algebra- Digital Logic gates
1. Digital logic design is a system in electrical and computer engineering that uses simple number values
to produce input and output operations. As a digital design engineer, you may assist in developing cell
phones, computers, and related personal electronic devices.
What Is Digital Logic Design?
Digital logic is rooted in binary code, which renders information through zeroes and ones
2. Title:
To verify the Truth Tables of Logic Gates & to practice the connections as per IC configuration.
Objective:
In this lab, our objective is to check the operation of logic gates according to their truth table
Apparatus:
Digital Electronic Trainer Model IPC 185 AD, flexible interconnected wires
LAB 1
Components:
Gates IC’s
AND gate 74LS08 X 1
OR gate 74LS32 X 1
NOT gate 74LS04 X 1
NAND gate 74LS00 X 1
NOR gate 74LS02 X 1
XOR gate 74LS86 X 1
3. AND Gate:
The output of an AND gate is High if and only if all the inputs are High. Otherwise, output will be Low. An AND
gate can have two or more inputs, while the output is one.
4. OR Gate:
The output of an OR gate is High if any of its input is High. The output can be Low only if
all the inputs are Low. An OR gate can have two or more inputs, its output is always one.
5. NOT Gate:
The output of NOT gate is High, when the input is Low. The output of NOT gate is inverse
of its input. The NOT gate always have 1 input & 1 output. A NOT gate is also called Inverter.
6. NAND Gate:
This is an AND gate with the output inverted, as shown by the “o” (Bubble) on the
output. The output is High if any of the input is Low. A NAND gate can have 2 or more inputs. The
output can be Low only if all the inputs are High.
7. NOR Gate:
This is an OR gate with the output inverted, as shown by the “o” (Bubble) on the output.
The output is High if & only if all the inputs are Low. The output is Low if any of the input is High.
A NOR gate can have 2 or more inputs & only 1 output.
8. The output of the XOR gate is High if either, but not both, inputs are High & the output is Low if
both the inputs are High or Low (same). The output is High if the 2 inputs are different. XOR gate
can only have 2 inputs & a single output.
XOR Gate:
9. Procedure:
1. Turn ON the Trainer.
2. Install the logic gate IC on the breadboard.
3. Wire the circuit by connecting two switches to the input pins & output pin of the gate to
the LED on the trainer. (Consult Logic gate datasheet for the pin configuration of IC).
4. Supply the +5V & GND to the pins 14 & 7 of the IC given respectively.
5. LED will give the output indication.
6. Test all the possible combination of inputs & verify the output according to the truth
table of the gate.
7. Fill in the truth tables according to the results.
8. Repeat the experiment for all the logic gates by IC’s on the trainer.
Conclusion:
(Do yourself).
