Presented by Brian Turner, President of OTI, Yann Padmore, President and Founder of Evolved Buildings, and Pook-Ping Yao, CEO and Founder of Optigo Networks at Realcomm IBCon 2017. Part of the Smart Building Integrator Summit, the three business leaders discussed the benefits associated with connecting disparate systems to a standard IP network.

SESSION:
Designing a Base Building Network – The Integrator's Role
PRESENTED BY:
Brian Turner, OTI (Moderator)
Yann Palmore, President and Founder, Evolved Buildings
Ping Yao, CEO and Founder, Optigo Networks
2. The Topic - Summarized
Single system connectivity is becoming less of an option each year. The benefits
associated with connecting disparate systems to a standard IP network are too
compelling to ignore. This extensive segment will cover all aspects of building
networks ranging from strategy to technical design. Some of the issues for
discussion will be the importance of building networks, understanding the different
types of networks ranging from LANs to WiFi, IT cyber governance, network
design considerations as well as special issues associated with smart building
connectivity.
For any integrator who is interested in providing clients with a long term,
comprehensive smart building strategy, a strong understanding of building
networks is imperative, which this session will provide.
3. What is the Integrator’s Role?
• Learn IT – Not all of it, but enough…
– IT is integral to the success of all modern OT projects
– Learn to speak intelligently about network security
– Learn the differences in how IT applications use IT resources and OT applications use
resources
• Be a resource
– It is important to be seen as a resource to the user and to the IT staff
– The applications in OT behave differently and require specific settings that may seem strange
to IT
– IT will be your biggest asset, if you are theirs
5. IT vs OT
Information Technology Operational Technology
Owned & Managed by IT Experts Building Owner/Manager
OT Integrator
Users Internal Tenants
Covers to tenant space
External Vendors
Covers entire property
Planning Ongoing process by IT Designed upfront
Reviewed Periodically
System Changes Often, BYOD, Upgrades Limited to replace-on-fail, or renovation.
SW Upgrades Automatic Scheduled and Rare
Internet Access Many web connections Restricted to few connections
Bandwidth Oversubscribed and Bursty Undersubscribed and Regular
8. The integrator’s Role
Should the integrator install an advanced technical backbone
when the designer has not specified one?
9. Best Practices for OT Networks
• Separated from IT
• Designed for coverage,
performance and scalability
• VLAN and subnets for each
service
• Dedicated VPN access
• Use PoE as necessary
• MDF & IDF Cabinets
• Managed by OT Integrators
