2. National Technology Day on May 11
National Technology Day is a very special day for
Indian Technology since 1999. It is so significant
because India achieved a huge technological
advancement on the day. The first, indigenous
aircraft “Hansa-3” was test flown at Bangalore on
this day. Not only this, India also performed
successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the
same day. India also executed three successful
nuclear tests, carried out at Pokhran, in Rajasthan
May 11.
3. Every year, `National Technology Day' is celebrated across
India on May 11; being commemorated to memorize the
anniversary of Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test held on 11
May 1998. The day glorifies the importance of science in
day to day life and motivates students to adopt science as
the career option.
Several events are organized in various engineering
colleges and technical institutes to mark the occasion.
Lectures, competitions, quizzes, presentations and
interactive sessions on different aspects of science are
organized all over the planet. The day is important for
scientists, engineers, planners and all others engaged in
governance and nation building.
The companies and individual are awarded with National
Technology Awards for adopting new technologies by the
president of India. The ministry of science and technology
coordinate different events.
4. India has made several technological breakthroughs in the field
of science. One such breakthrough was mastering of nuclear
weapons technology. Hardly a handful of countries in the world
have mastered nuclear weapons and missile technology.
Through the series of controlled tests at Pokhran, India joined
an elite group of nations to achieve the feat.
The arrival of Indian technology got a further boost with test
flight of the indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 and test firing of
indigenously developed Trishul, Agni and Prithvi missile. These
technological marvels made the world sit and notice the rapid
advancements made by India.
National Technology Day falls on 11th May. The occasion is
celebrated all over the India to commemorate technological
breakthroughs. All these achievements are significantly diverse
in nature and that makes them even more commendable.
Before Pokhran, India was not really acknowledged as a force
to reckon with in international technology but the nuclear tests
completely changed the scenario for the nation.
5. It is a scientific miracle to develop nuclear power technology
and when India managed to do it indigenously, the country
had every reason to feel proud of itself. 11th May is the day
when India flexed its technological muscle. It is also a sweet
reminder of the success of the country in a strategically
important area.
Today, India has institutional, strategic, technological and
manpower strengths and National Technology Day makes us
remember this fact. The day enabled India to make its
commanding presence felt in the global arena. Now, India
cannot be taken lightly in any sphere of technology.
National Technology Day symbolizes achievements of India in
the field of science and technology. India has made rapid
strides in every field of technology. Right from agriculture to
software, India is a giant force in the world and very few
countries can boast of such turnarounds.
6. o 11th May the National Technology Day is celebrated annually all over the
India to commemorate technological breakthroughs which included
1. Mastering of the nuclear weapons technology (Pokharan II) through a
series of controlled tests at Pokhran,
2. Test firing of the indigenously developed Trishul missile and
3. Test flight of the indigenous aircraft Hansa-3.
These diverse and significant achievements on a single day, in a way,
indicated the resurgence of Indian Technology. Nuclear power represents
perhaps one of the most powerful technologies developed in the 20th
century and this was a technology that is not easily available. The
success of India in a developing nuclear power not only represented India
developing its own technological muscle but also success in an area which
is strategically important.
What Exactly happened on 11th May 1998 ?
On May 11 and May 13, 1998, India conducted five nuclear tests at the
Pokhran test range in Rajasthan, India. First of the five tests were carried
out on May 11, 1998 when three nuclear devices were detonated
simultaneously registering in nearby seismic stations as a 5.3 Richter
Scale earthquake. The next two tests were carried out on May 13, 1998.
Since then, India has imposed a self-moratorium on nuclear tests.
