HISTORY
The story of the Tata Group of business unfolds
with the birth of its founder Jamshedji Tata in
Gujarat in 1839. Jamshedji graduated in 1858 and
joined his father trading firm.
In 1868 he started a trading company on his own,
with a capital of Rs.21, 000/- He set up a cotton mill
in Nagpur in 1874. with the times Jamshedji named
it Empress Mill. A.
Tata Group is a private company with
headquarters at Mumbai. The present Chairman is
Ratan Tata who took over from J.R.D. Tata in 1991.

CURRENT STATUS
On January 31, 2007, under the chairmanship of
Ratan Tata, Tata Sons successfully acquired Corus
Group.The merger created the fifth largest steel
producing entity in the world.
On March 26, 2008, Tata Motors, under Ratan
Tata, bought Jaguar & Land Rover from Ford Motor
Company, for £1.15 billion ($2.3 billion).
On March 23,2009, Tata Motors, under Ratan
Tata, made world’s cheapest car Named “Nano”.

Tata argues that the Nano is exactly the right car for the
right time.
Ratan Tata said;
“If I had conceived a million- dollar super car today, I
think you’d have every reason to question whether that’s
the right product at the right time in the planet that we are
living in”.
Nano is going on sale on April 9 2009, at a factory price
of 100,000 rupees, with in a few years, Nano could also be
available in Europe & the U.S.

CONCLUSION
Tata is Indian largest auto-maker industry. The
2009 annual survey by the Reputation Institute
ranked Tata Group as the 11th most reputable
company in the world. The survey included 600
global companies. But Tata still need more and
more innovation and change in itself.
