TODAY WE WILL LEARN ABOUT
3. Observe all your surroundings. what things do you
see? While coming to school, going back home , going
to playground etc.
We see many plants around us- around our homes , in
the school ground, on the way to the school, in the
parks and gardens, isn’t it??
Let us get to know the different parts of plant.
Introduction
5. Absorption of water and nutrients
from the soil.
Storage of food.
Conduction of absorbed water and
nutrients to stem.
Hold the plant.
Functions of root
6. It supports and holds leaves, flowers,
and fruits.
Provides energy, keeps the leaves in
the sunlight.
It carries water and nutrients from the
roots to different parts of plants
(Provides transportation).
Functions of stem
7. Manufacture of food-
It is the primary function of green leaves.
The process is called photosynthesis by which leaf
manufactures food material in the presence of
sunlight and green pigment-chlorophyll present in the
leaf.
The preparation of food material takes place out of
water and carbon-dioxide obtained from the soil and
the air respectively.
Functions of leaf
8. Evaporation of water-
Water absorbed by the root hairs of the plant is
evaporated from the leaf surface during the day time.
It generally takes place through the stomata
openings. This phenomenon is known as
transpiration.
This process allows the plant to absorb water and
minerals from the soil and conduct the same to the
top of the plant.
Functions of leaf
9. Interchange of gases-
It takes place both from respiration and
photosynthesis.
There are numerous , minute openings present on the
leaves, called stomata , through which gaseous
exchange takes place between the atmosphere and
the plant body.
Functions of leaf
10. Development of fruits and seeds.
Formation of new offspring.
Protection to male and female reproductive
parts of plant.
Primary purpose of a flower is reproduction.
Reproductive part of most plants.
Functions of flower
11. Plant are one source of our food.
Which parts of a plant??
We eat many leafy vegetables.
We eat fruits of some plants.
Seed of mustard plant give us oil and the
leaves are used as vegetables.
Sometimes roots , stems , and even flowers.
Importance
12. Edible parts-some plants have two or more edible(eatable)
parts.
Think of more examples where two or more parts of a
single plant are used as food!!
Root-carrots , onions, beetroot etc.
Stem- sugarcane , celery etc.
Leaf-cabbage , spinach etc.
Flower- broccoli , cauliflower etc.
Fruit-tomato, apple, cucumber etc.
Seeds-peas , beans etc.
Plant Parts
13. Take some dry seeds of moong or chana.
Put a small quantity of seeds in a container filled with
water.
Leave this aside for a day.
Next day, drain the water completely and leave the seeds
in the vessel.
Wrap them with a piece of wet cloth and set aside.
What changes do you observe??
A small white structure may have grown out of the seeds.
Activity Time
14. If so , the seeds have sprouted.
After washing these sprouted seeds, you can eat
them. They can also be boiled . Add some spices and
get a tasty snack.
Activity Time
15. Seeds are the part of the plant that make new
plants.
When they germinate(starts to grow) , they
will develop into new plants.
SEEDS
16. Do you know where honey comes from or how it is
produced??
Have you seen a beehive where so many bees keep
buzzling about ?
Bees collect nectar(sweet juices) from flowers, convert it
into honey and store it in their hive.
Flowers and their nectar may be available only for a part of
the year.
So, bees store this nectar for their use all through the year.
When we find such a beehive, we collect the food stored
by the bees as honey.
Do you know??
17. Parts of plant are-roots , stem, leaf and flower.
Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Stem conducts water to other parts of plants.
The Leaves prepare food.
Flower is the reproductive part of plant.
Seeds make new plants.
