Summary
John is the typical high school geek, fantasizing after the hottest
girl in the school. He is extremely negative and thinks everyone/
every- thing is against him. He has anti-friends, anti-subjects, anti-
school teachers, and a father who is not his father. His tuba is a
frog that tells him poems when he is playing it. This first section is
basically about how miserable he is with his very dull life.
My Thoughts –
I thought the introduction of this very original novel was a bit too
much of a depressant, because John is extremely depressed with
this and that. His tuba won’t play for him, or the girl who he likes
eats his note. However, the novel has plenty of humor and irony in
it to keep the pace up, I really enjoyed the part where Glory eats
John’s note and quite leaves him speechless. Typical school
behavior, but to an extreme level to make it hilarious, but not too
far-fetched is truly a talent that Klass has mastered.
Predictions – I predict once that John has finally figured out why
Gloria ate his note, that Gloria will play a horrendous joke on
John, just to be mean.
Vocabulary – incriminating- to prove or make somebody appear to be
guilty of a crime or mistake
2. Favorite Passage-
“But then her lovely lips, like twin rosebud petals in spring sunlight,
spread themselves open. Her pearly teeth part. She eats my note.”
