2. Facts
• An estimated 5.3 million Americans of all ages have
Alzheimer’s disease in 2015
• A recent study using the latest data from the 2010 U.S.
Census and the Chicago Health and Aging Project
(CHAP), a population-based study of chronic health
diseases of older people
• CHAP is designed so that everyone in the study is
tested for dementia. But in the community, only about
half of those who would meet the diagnostic criteria
for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are
diagnosed with dementia by a physician

4. • A review of many studies concluded that older African-
Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s
and other dementias as older whites
– 12.2 % of Americans were Black or African American in
2010
• Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to
have Alzheimer’s and other dementias as older whites
– 16.3 % of Americans were Hispanic or Latino in 2010
• The number of people with Alzheimer´s disease will
increase up to 16 million by the time of 2050, unless a
cure is found for the disease
• Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of the
death in America (alzheimers.net 2016)

5. Prevention of memory disorders
• Healthy eating habits – diverse and regular
diet, enough vitamins and nutriens
• Exercising – at least 30-45 minutes daily, 60
minutes recommended
• Resting and sleep – enough of ’’deep sleep’’.
Lack of sleep inhibits proper memory trace.

6. Eating habits
• According to Office of Disease Prevention and Health
Promotion
– About three-fourths of the population has an eating pattern
that is low in vegetables, fruits, dairy, and oils
– More than half of the population is meeting or exceeding total
grain and total protein foods recommendations, but, as
discussed later in the chapter, are not meeting the
recommendations for the subgroups within each of these food
groups
– Most Americans exceed the recommendations for added sugars,
saturated fats, and sodium
– In addition, the eating patterns of many are too high in calories.
– More than two-thirds of all adults and nearly one-third of all
children and youth in the United States are either overweight or
obese
