disadvantage in the modern world."
Positive change in society came only after horrifying
incidents that subjected women to mental and physical
torture.

• Bhanwari Devi- a dalit
government employee engaged
in spreading awareness about
hygiene and education.
• Run campaigns against dowry
and child marriage
• Helping a young girl who was
forced getting married at young
age.
• Powerful political people
resisted and created barriers
and the marriage couldn't be
prevented.

revenge , Bhanwari
Devi was raped by a
group of people
It took 52 hours to
file a complaint
Rajasthan high court. Acquitted the
men of rape on grounds that she
cannot be raped in front of husband
And the degree of punishment is
lesser than crime of rape. A set of guidelines
intended to protect
women at workplaces,
instituted by supreme

Rajasthan
• The village head cannot rape
• Men of different castes cannot participate in gang
rape
• Elder men of 60-70 years cannot rape
• A man cannot rape in front of a relative - this was
with reference to two of the men, an uncle and
nephew
• A member of the higher caste cannot rape a lower
caste women because of reasons of purity
• Bhanwari Devi's husband couldn't have quietly
watched his wife being gang-raped
1. Many NGO'S who worked for women safety filed a
petition seeking justice for Bhanwari Devi
2. They demanded appropriate punishment for the people
involved in gang rape
3. They filed a PIL by the name vishakha and said that
fundamental rights of Bhanwari Devi were violated
4. NGO mentioned the point of safety of women at
workplaces owing to the fact that employer of Bhanwari
Devi did not accept responsibility though the reason for
her rape was because of her duty performed in her
employment
THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE
After years of massive
protests and tiredless
work by protestors
and social workers, a
judgement was
passed.
Judgement was given by a 3-
judge bench which held that
Article 14,15, 19(1)(g) and
Article 21 of the constitution
were violated by the act of
sexual harassment.

She fought till her last breath

close the files. She was finally
murdered and the case
continued till she received
posthumous justice.

against evils and stand for the rights and
safeguard the dignity and respect every
women.

should be strong
enough to stand

the society.

Acquitted the men of rape on grounds that she cannot be raped in front of husband And the degree of punishment is lesser than crime of rape.   • 8. • The village head cannot rape • Men of different castes cannot participate in gang rape • Elder men of 60-70 years cannot rape • A man cannot rape in front of a relative - this was with reference to two of the men, an uncle and nephew • A member of the higher caste cannot rape a lower caste women because of reasons of purity • Bhanwari Devi's husband couldn't have quietly watched his wife being gang-raped
  • 9. 1. Many NGO'S who worked for women safety filed a petition seeking justice for Bhanwari Devi 2. They demanded appropriate punishment for the people involved in gang rape 3. They filed a PIL by the name vishakha and said that fundamental rights of Bhanwari Devi were violated 4. NGO mentioned the point of safety of women at workplaces owing to the fact that employer of Bhanwari Devi did not accept responsibility though the reason for her rape was because of her duty performed in her employment THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE
  • 10. After years of massive protests and tiredless work by protestors and social workers, a judgement was passed. Judgement was given by a 3- judge bench which held that Article 14,15, 19(1)(g) and Article 21 of the constitution were violated by the act of sexual harassment.

  • 13. Over the years, she has won several awards for her exceptional courage, most recently being recognised by the Delhi Commission for Women on 8 March. She fought till her last breath denying all the greed she was offered to rest her case and close the files. She was finally murdered and the case continued till she received posthumous justice.
