 Identification of porosity by helium Porosimeter
 Identification of permeability by gas Permeameter
To determine the porosity and permeability of
the core plugs
 It is defined as the ratio of pore volume to bulk volume of
a rock sample.
 Porosity is one of the most important rock properties in
describing porous media.
 The porosity is defined as the capability of a rock to hold
fluids in pores.
 0-5% Negligible
 5-10% Poor
 10-15% Fair
 15-20% Good
 20-25% Very Good
 Permeability of a rock is defined as the ease
with which the fluid can flow.
 Permeability with one fluid in pore is called
“Absolute permeability”
 With more then one fluid is called “Effective
permeability”
 “Relative permeability” is the ratio of
effective permeability and absolute
permeability.
 It is denoted by ‘K’
 Permeability can be calculated by milli Darcy
 Poor 1-10 mD
 Fair 10-100 mD
 Good 100-1000 mD
 Excellent >1000 mD
 By correlating Porosity and Permeability of
the core samples, we get to know the
lithology of the formation.
Thank you
