The Earth's atmosphere is known as the gas layer, commonly known as air, which is maintained around the Earth's planet and by the gravity of the Earth. Earth's atmosphere creates pressure for liquid water on the surface of the Earth, protects the Earth's atmosphere, absorbs ultraviolet solar radiation, warms the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect) and decreases the temperature of the temperature (daily temperature variation) between day and night.

• Weather occurs here
• Contains almost all the mass of the atmosphere
• It is 16 km thick at equator and less than 9 km thick at
poles

• Temperature gets warmer with the increasing
altitude.
• No water vapor in the stratosphere results in few
clouds and no storm.
• Stratopause: The boundary between the top of the
Stratosphere and the bottom of the Mesosphere.
• Ozone Layer: In the upper part Stratosphere there
is ozone layer which absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet
ray

• At the top of the mesosphere is the

the thermosphere.

20. The atmosphere is a mixture of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), and other gases (1%) that surrounds Earth.
High above the planet, the atmosphere becomes thinner until it gradually reaches space. It is divided into
five layers. Most of the weather and clouds are found in the first layer.
The atmosphere is an important part of what makes Earth livable. It blocks some of the Sun's dangerous
rays from reaching Earth. It traps heat, making Earth a comfortable temperature. And the oxygen within
our atmosphere is essential for life.
Over the past century, greenhouse gases and other air pollutants released into the atmosphere have been
causing big changes like global warming, ozone holes, and acid rain.
