Summary
The greatest asset of a leader is self-confidence for self-evidence of having what it takes to make
good decisions that can be effective in any situation. What a leadership means cannot be defined
just by a single style. To be a leader requires the courage to face challenges in such a way that a
leader comes out triumphantly. A leader with a burning desire to influence other for a change.
The ability to see challenges and see fear is a leader who can transcend to bring about the good
results, to think about Moses in the Bible as a leader that I wish to emulate to lead in any
situation, for I can walk in a burning fire, across in the ocean, and I came out with no scratch or a
scar to set the example for my followers to follow my lead as well to share my lead with other
leaders. A shared leader can be view in the desire of a primal leader to share strength and
inspiration that will motivate his or her followers. Today's leader is about power for lack of
leadership for a power is not a leader, power is not about sharing, and power is about controlling.
While the leader of the people is about saving the lives of others for sharing their strength and
wisdom. Leaders of the people are driven by the innate desire for their ability to love and save
their people is the style of a leader for the people. We need a leader with abilities and capabilities
for taking the initiative to make decisions that enable others to act quickly, appropriately,
decisively and sensibly in a timely manner to produce good outcomes in any troubling events. I
have learned that the complexity of the healthcare system can be managed for having leaders
with an intellectual instinct and emotional intelligence that see the urgency in a situation for
making sensible decision to save lives. To internalize what Goleman et al (2001) defined as
inherent of a primal leader is “self-reflection for (1) what do I want to be, (2) whom I am now,
(3) how do I get from here to there, (4) how do I make change stick, and (5) who can help me”,
are the “hidden driver” of primal leadership for a leader in you to make decision to do what is
possible any given situation including adapting to a new situation if that happened to be the case.

Week 11 Reflective Essay F: Consider Shared Leadership and Complexity Leadership
What is important in leadership for effectiveness is a leader who can leverage every
opportunity to communicate clearly and concisely the organization message of operation and
expected performance with confidence. As well able to establish good rapports for welcoming
subordinates and workers to provide information and give directions for tasks. However, to bring
about a change require more than just being effective for clarity because a change is about a
constant debate to evaluate which leadership style can bring about a change for positive results.
This paper is to answer these questions, what I consider for understanding shared leadership and
complexity leadership, how do these theories change or deepen my understanding of my own
leadership style and philosophy, what are my thoughts about leadership being distributed
throughout a human system? And what are my reactions to the idea that leadership is not about
people, but the spaces between people in human interaction?
What I consider for understanding shared leadership and complexity leadership
Shared leadership
Understanding the model of shared leadership is to influence members to achieve better
and greater results in the environment, such as school and college for the diverse cultures of the
students and of the board of directors for a concept of a team that flows with various skills and
experience for making decisions. According to Aube, Rousseau, Brunelle (2018) suggest that the
shared leadership “is considered as one of the team-level phenomena most likely to favor the
flow experience in the emergency by clarifying the strength of the relationship that fostering the
adoption of teamwork behaviors” (198-206) for my understanding of a shared leadership is
sharing of talent, experience, skills, and knowledge equally among the group member is the key
to the vision and mission of an organization.
4. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 4
Shared leadership provides a broader view into the individual specified skills that can be
shared for the understanding of responsibilities that is practice in an organization, such as in
school environment for teacher style of teaching is specified to the curriculum designed by the
board of director for variations of different styles of the teachers. According to Bolden (2011),
shared leadership is a leadership style that broadly distributes leadership responsibility, such that
people within a team and organization lead each other. It has frequently been compared to
“horizontal” leadership, distributed leadership, and collective leadership and is most contrasted
with more traditional “vertical” or “hierarchical” leadership that resides predominantly with an
individual instead of a group (p259-262) to explain that shared leadership can be define in many
ways for the phenomenon of leader styles in which leaders can lead an individual as well a
group, makes a shared leadership the practice of governing in a school or college is by expanding
the number of people involved in decision making related to school's organization, operation,
and academics.
There are several notions that shared leadership can be traced back to the early
civilization of the Roman Empire. According to Sally (2002), share leadership was noted to be
present in the early days of “Republican Rome” because ‘Rome had a successful system of co-
leadership that lasted for over four centuries’” (p.84-89), to show that shared leadership is a
system of governing the people. The effect of shared leadership at school or college is considered
as a provisional on how the organization views their mission to influences student engagement in
a variety of interpretations for how the teachers interact with one another as well how the
teachers relate to their student for teaching style.
5. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 5
Complexity Leadership
Understanding complexity leadership is a new concept of indecision on how to
understand the leader style in an unpredictable situation as a new way of analyzing an
organization according to Grobman (2005), complexity leadership for a theory “is a new way to
look at organizational change.” To suggest complexity is a new structure on how to lead in the
unpredictable chaotic environment based on information age and technology for adaptive system.
According to Drucker (2012), organizations of the 21st century face a complex, competitive
environment called “the threshold of chaos” that is due to globalization and technological
revolution.
There are several contexts to the theories of complexity leadership for their styles and
skills. According to Baltaci and Balci (2017), complexity leadership is a result of "complex
systems for the dynamic nature of those systems". To implies that "the complex system theory
focuses on finding out and defining strategies and behaviors that foster continuous learning,
resonating with new conditions and creativity in organizations with dynamic and collaborative
managerial perspectives, especially their subunits" (p.25).
As well Baltaci & Balci stated that complexity leadership is a joint result product of
widely known three types of leadership:
1. Administrative leadership based on strict control and a significant bureaucratic
hierarchy
2. Adaptive leadership fundamentally based on creative problem solving, resonating
with new conditions and learning and
6. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 6
3. Action-centered leadership that involves immediate decision-making mechanisms
employed in crises and dynamic productivity.
How do these theories change or deepen my understanding of my own leadership style and
philosophy
The two theories have deepened my understanding in many ways, the shared leadership
that represents a collaborative of leadership making decision that can be shared among the
leaders in the organization for information as well that can be share to engage the subordinates
for work and to teach students for activities are the combination of leader styles for the
effectiveness of an organization. While the complexity of leadership requires inventions of
leadership style to address the unpredictable in a situation for adaptiveness require the freedom
of developing a combination of styles that enables the leader to interconnect as an agent's that
can change in the context of a situation for linear and nonlinear to achieve results. This concept
of a good working definition of a complex adaptive system according to Plesk, Lindberg and
Zimmerman (1997) is "a system of individual agents, who have freedom to act in ways that are
not always predictable, and whose actions are interconnected such that one agent's actions
changes the context for other agents"(p360) has increased my knowledge about leadership style
can be reform to fit into current event that may include unforeseeable event as well for
unpredictable occurrence that requires leadership.
What are my thoughts about leadership being distributed throughout a human
system?
What makes a leader is a maturity as well as the emotional intelligence to realize when an
action is necessary and why. In any style of leadership, there will always be pros and cons, how a
leader triumph over the cons is the depth of ability and maturity to face challenges and able to
adapt to a situation. A leader by style is not a pleaser. A leader is someone that makes a
7. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 7
difference based on his or her ability, knowledge, skill and experience. A leader ability to adapt
depending on the leader emotional intelligence during a difficult time, on in an unpredictable
situation where many are afraid to even try. A leader is someone who demonstrates the courage
to face a challenge for a good outcome is a quick thinker for an instinct and intelligent as well as
a courageous person for emotional intelligent for understanding what he or she is capable to do
to survive or adapt.
To give an example of myself in an unpredictable situation in a team project, I have the
sense to use what is available at moment to start focusing to what I need to do for not waiting to
have all the information before I start. In the process, I will discover what I need to know that is
not available at moment or not given or unknown to formulate what I need to know for asking
questions with what if.
I have able to help a professor to indicate that he just forget to include the correct
information that will apply to an assignment to make changes as well to provide other things that
need to be included as information for doing a project, in a case where a professor forget to
attach a case that students need to analyze for financial viability of an organization to come up
with a new service. The point is, the leader means taking the first step to figuring out what needs
to be done or what needs to happen in a situation as for what can be done or what may be
possible to do for an alternative to a situation, personally I like to give choice in a situation for if
we cannot do this, let try this for an invention or innovation. A leader should be an adventurer.
As well I have come across a professor whom I was talking to indicated issues to realize
that the professor thinks I am challenging his knowledge instead of realizing that the information
that she provided is not clear to be specific to an assignment based on the current topic. The
professor is referencing information that applies to week 2 for week 11 assignment when the
8. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 8
topics are different. There is no way any student can use the topic for week 11 to analyze the
questions that related to week 2. The question for week 11 does not match with the topic for no
relation. Although I was the first student as well the only student who email the professor about
the issue, that the professor responded to indicate that I do not understand the assignment
because of a language barrier and I should contact the UMUC Writing Center to help me.
The professor later realized the mistake after the assignment was due or during the time
the professor was assigning the grade to later apologize to the students for not check "ask my
professor" where the students including me posted the issues to give everyone credits. What I
learned is never to be afraid to take the initiative when others may hesitate. I have been label of
straightforwardness when it comes to my views with others because I say things as I see it for
what it is to point out a mistake or unclarified information that may be confusing for others to
understand. Many leaders projected their ideas or views into other when being confronted for not
listen to a different view of someone they view not to be at their level, as well to blame anyone
who dares indicate otherwise or project a different idea.
I try not to force anyone to do thing in my way because I am a leader for my own
authenticity to say what I feel, expect what I want from other, desire to share my view with
confidence to give other the choices to like me, agree with me or not to like me or not agreement
with me. Whatever the case may be, I cannot or will not change myself or what I believe to be
the right thing to do to please anyone. As well I do not like to give an ultimatum for my way or
no way. If I cannot get a consensus I usually branch out to do the best I can on my own with the
hope that others may follow for setting an example. To me a leader is not about power, I have
learned that some profess to be the leader are about having the power to take away the credit that
9. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 9
belongs to their follower as well to control their follower for their own advantage. The leader for
lips service is about power not about the people.
For my thought, the distributed of leadership would be the notion for diversity leadership
that would consider all the elements in a situation to be used to analyze for collaborative of
views or ideas as the bases for making a decision. For no idea or view is too small or irrelevant
in an unpredictable situation, as well to be fair with everyone count for being a person as well the
people. We need each other in a changing world that is unpredictable for your enemy today may
be the one to rescue you in a situation.
Never to underestimate another view is my notion of a distributed leader is about sharing
and transmitting another view to count in a decision making. According to Bolden (2011), a
"distributed leadership is not something done by actions through which people contribute to a
group or organization . . . ‘it is a group activity that works through and within relationships,
rather than individual'" (Bolden, 2011 p. 252 & Bennet et al, 2003 p. 3). To equate distributed
leadership is aligned with the notion of having a diversity of leadership. Nevertheless, leadership
for diversity and flexibility if put in practice more contribute to mutual understanding between a
leader and a worker in the workplace environment. Although leadership is also about rising up to
the occasion to challenges associated with different views for good or bad. Leadership style to
reform or to change the people or a person is humanistic for primal leadership and paternalistic
leadership.
Primal leadership according to Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee (2001) primal leader is
about “self-reflection for five steps; (1) what do I want to be, (2) whom I am now, (3) how do I
get from here to there, (4) how do I make change stick, and (5) who can help me”, are the
“hidden driver of primal leader for “great performance” (p42-51). Also, a primal leader is about
10. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 10
knowing thyself for being a leader to know others to lead, you have to be authentic with self for
emotional intelligence in other to be able to lead others for an effective leadership.
Paternalistic leadership is a parental figure of taking care of their subordinates as a parent
in an organization for a style of leadership that nurture the potential of his followers to become
totally committed to what the leader believes while encouraging the subordinate to strive to be
independent in the workforce. I think the strength of a paternalistic leader is able to be kind and
mild when face with a perplex situation. I think paternalistic leadership for healthcare would be
efficient and effective for patient care.
The workers or followers are expected to stay with a company or an organization to treat
each other as a family that enables workers or followers to go to each other with any problems
they might have regarding operation of the business because they have trust in their leader to
believe in what they say is going to help them and the organization. Example of paternalistic
leadership are the pastors and their followers as well as in the military for the officer and the
gentleman, my best movie. According to Bernard Bass, who wrote “leadership and performance
beyond expectation” said this about paternalistic leadership, “workers who follow paternalistic
leadership also have better organization skills, the leader encourages organization because they
allow the workers to complete tasks so that they can stay on top of their work”(Bass, 1985). The
only downsides to paternalistic leadership are favoritism in decision making for workers who are
more suitable to follow direction are the ones who will be loyal to the organization for assigning
the level of the hierarchy is by loyalty to the organization.
11. WEEK 11 REFLECTIVEESSAY F 11
What are my reactions to the idea that leadership is not about people, but the spaces
between people in human interaction?
My reaction is a mixture of thoughts about how someone becomes a leader is by
followers, which are the people and who someone lead for a leader are the workers, both
followers and workers are the people. To think leaders are for the people. A leader cannot be for
space as a distance from the people, no one can lead if he or she distance himself from the
people. If there is a space then is a situation in which no one knows how to lead for an empty
space is a thought of a leader losing his followers or an organization closes down for no worker.
A leadership in space is lack of leadership for having a business but no subordinate is a leader to
himself or herself. However, I am wondering what would be considered for the strength of a
complex leader in a complex situation.
