2. dredging equipment
dredging is the removal of bottom sediments
from sreams, rivers , lakes , coastal water and
oaceans .
4. Bucket ladder dredgers
It consists of endless chain of bucket , mounted
and running round a leader , formed in the middle
of the bow of a floating vessel. The ladder can be
lowered or raised by the line .the bucket are provided
with pronged cutting edge .
The chain of bucket is operated by a big wheel .
the dug material is brought up as the chain move
round and can be dumped in the hopper of the dredger
herself.
This can also be transferred to
the barges along side by means of a chute.
The dredger is suitable for soft ground , sand , gravel
hard clay .
they are used where depth is not large .
6. Advantages
It has an ability to dredge a wide variety of material
ranging from soft sand , clay , shingle , soft rock, etc.
Foreign materials like scrap iron , wires, etc . Can be
remove.
Bucket types can be changed to suit the ground
coditions .
7. disadvantages
IT has poor stability when moving or under towage from one site to another.
Since it is mounted on pontoon , it is affected by the wave actions.
It is operation is noisy.
8. GRAB DREDGERS
This is the most common types off mechanical dredger. It this types,
grab is suspended by a cable or chain from an extending boom or
crane.
The grab can be opened or closed by suitable mechanism. The grab is
allowed to fall by gravity in the open position, till it buries itself into
the ground . The jaws are than closed by pulling up and the enclosed
mass of earth is lifted.
The grab is then swung to a convenient position and the material
discharge by opening the grab.
It is suitable for all types of soil. They have the ability to dredge
close to quay walls, jetties and in basins without damage. A grab can
handle extraneous materials like scarp iron, wire, tyres , etc. It can
work up to depths of 25 m.
11. advantages
It is a universal tool and can be used in almost all types of soil.
They have the ability to dredge close to quay walls, jetties, etc
It can also handle foreign material like iron scrap, wire, types, etc.
It can work up to depths of 25 m
12. disadvantages
It is well suited for material such as loose soils or
loose rubble only.
Low output.
13. dipper dredgers
It consists of floating vessel strongly constructed , carrying
an inclined frame.
A dipper sticks through the middle of the boom. The dipper
stick is worked by and pinion arrangements . A dipper bucket
is attached at the end of the dipper stick . The bucket is moved
up or down with the help of a hoist cable . The boom is capable
of swinging an angle of about 180 degree.
The dredger is very powerful and capable of excavating in hard
soil ,boulder beds rocks. These dredgers are capable of digging
up to depth of 15 to 20 m under water . They have a maximum
dumping range of about 35 m.
15. physical properties
Length : 68 m
width :23 m
depth :4.5 m
draft : 3.2m
total power : 7040 KW
Bucket capacity : 14.00 CU.M
BUCKET : 23 CU.M
DREDGING DEPTH : 24 M
16. ADVANTAGES
It can handle larger rock pieces, thus reducing blasting needs.
It can efficiently remove rock and other hard material.
Well suited for dredging clays in a firm hard materials.
It can work in confined spaces around docks and narrow channels.
