The Toll Group’s range of world class express service
providers includes Toll IPEC, Toll Priority, Toll Express
and NQX. These businesses are market leaders and the
expertise they have built over the years, combined with
the knowledge of the Japanese market that comes from
our existing position in Footwork, gives us confidence
in this acquisition.
I am delighted that Pat Kearns who led the Toll IPEC
transformation has agreed to head up Toll’s transition
in Japan and will be working closely with Footwork’s
senior management and customers.
Nonetheless Toll’s ongoing growth and excellent financial
performance throughout these difficult economic conditions
could not be achieved without the dedicated support of our
employees and contractors.
On behalf of the board and the senior management team,
thank you for your passion, drive and commitment.
These are the qualities that Toll is bringing to its customer
relationships in the 55 countries in which we operate.
Finally, I would like to wish you and your family a wonderful
and safe holiday season and a happy and successful
New Year.
 F
or many companies around the world 2009 has been
a horror year. Across the Toll Group, we have faced
some significant challenges but we can finish the
year with pride in our successes and great confidence
in our future.
While many of our competitors carry uncertainty into 2010
and continue to scale back their operations, we have the
people, the skills and the balance sheet that will allow us
to continue to grow.
We will continue to expand our regional and global
network. We will strengthen our operations outside
of Australia as we tap into new fertile markets
and reach critical economies of scale to reduce
operating costs. The recently announced Group
restructure (see page 3) is an important realignment
of our integrated service offering and includes
well deserved promotions for the new Divisional
Directors.
The acquisition of Footwork Express in Japan,
a top ten logistics provider in the world’s second
largest market, is further evidence of the Group’s
commitment to its expansion program across the
Asia Pacific.
This acquisition is not only an important expansion
of Toll’s express freight operation it is also a
significant investment by an Australian company
in the Japanese freight and logistics market.
Footwork Express employs more than 5,000
people and generates revenue of approximately
A$775 million in its national network. Toll has
had a minority stake in the business since
April 2006. The control that we will gain from
the acquisition of the remaining equity will
allow us to make the operational changes needed
to secure the future success and growth of
Footwork within Japan and the region.

Toll Liquid Distribution’s
Emergency Response Training for Santos
 T
oll Liquid Distribution was recently awarded a contract
worth over $1.2 million dollars annually to cart fuel-
condensate from the Santos Gas Plant in Newmerella
(near Orbost) to Geelong in Victoria.
Paul Milo, National Business Development Manager stated
that “from November, Toll Liquid Distribution expects to cart
over 100,000 litres from the site daily using a combination
of semi-trailer and B-Double tankers. However, there are a
number of reasonably significant hurdles for the operations
team to clear before we can get this task underway. It’s a
sensitive location environmentally and we also need to be
mindful of the local’s feelings towards tankers operating in
their back yard.”
As a consequence, David Love, National Operations
Manager arranged to visit the site to complete a risk
assessment and confirm the best way to undertake the
activity whilst minimising Toll’s impact in the local area.
Given the potential concern from locals about the tankers,
David decided that before operations would commence
he would test the emergency response from Toll and the
local authorities. He enlisted the help of local Police and
CFA Brigades to arrange a combined Emergency
Response Exercise simulating a truck versus utility accident.
The exercise involved local brigades from Cann Valley,
Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Marlo, Orbost and Wairewa.
The CFA were paged to the scene and practised how to
assess the situation from a safe distance before members
were kitted up in breathing apparatus to undertake the
simulated rescue of the utility driver under the protection
of hose-lines from the attending appliances.
The Brigades then simulated a burning tanker scenario
where the use of water to reduce heat and foam to
extinguish the fire was practised. Given the remote location,
fire hydrants were not available so appliances not directly
involved in fighting the simulated fire were shuttled via a
local dam adding a further degree of realism and complexity
to the activity.
Toll employees were also on-hand to provide advice on the
best way to contain spilt product and protect the immediate
environment as well as learn lessons from the exercise
themselves.
The consensus from all who attended the activity was
that valuable knowledge was gained and that the practical
exercise was far more constructive than any amount of
theory on how to respond to such an emergency. n
 New Toll Structure
 T
he future success of Toll depends on our ability to
grow dynamically into our chosen regional and global
markets. Our organisation needs to be structured to
enable our key service offerings to be sold to customers
and industries who want global solutions. These latest
changes are aimed at further aligning key businesses within
the Group to achieve this.
The new structure will be effective January 1, 2010 with
operational divisions shown below. n
Footwork Japan will report to Corporate during integration phase.

Shell Distribution
 O
ne of the notable new business wins for the year
was the cartage contract for Shell Australia. Toll
Liquid Distribution is now responsible for approximately
50% of Shell’s subcontracted cartage work in Victoria and
Queensland for the next three years with the potential to
extend that out to at least five years.
The Team has had no time to celebrate the win however, as
time lines were tight and it was imperative that Toll guaranteed
supply continuity during the critical transition phase.
David Love’s team was able to successfully integrate
a new Queensland Branch Manager, 49 new drivers and
19 prime movers and trailer sets including both tri-axle
semi-trailers, and five 19m B-Double sets into the existing
business all within a period of about three months.
Given the short time frame, almost all aspects of the
transition were on the project’s critical path, but none
more so than the new tankers. To ensure that Toll were
able to achieve the required milestones, they decided
to introduce ‘paint free’ tankers into the fleet utilising
polished aluminium and a full vinyl livery which trimmed
almost 120 days off the manufacturing schedule whilst
also delivering a very professional looking product.
Consequently, the bulk of the transition was completed
on time and went off without a hitch despite the need to
also find a few ‘spare’ trailers that could be swung into
action a few weeks early in Geelong. David Love stated
that he was “really proud of the whole team – they
worked really well together enabling a very successful
implementation and ensured that Toll was also able
to hit our KPI in the November review.”
In particular David wanted to acknowledge the extra
efforts put in by the administration staff: Helen Smith,
Maureen Tillotson and Kim Donaldson; the driver
trainers: Paul Hendrie and Merv McKee; and the bulk fuel
schedulers: Mark Wandel and Brett McPhail who were
all stretched well beyond the normal call of duty in order to
achieve what was a fantastic outcome for the business.
Other contracted work awarded to Toll Liquid Distribution
during 2009 included BOC Gases ($19M pa), Cargill
Australia ($4M pa) and Santos Ltd ($1.2M pa). The team
is now looking forward to an equally busy and challenging
year in 2010. n

Toll Liquid Distribution Wins
Contract
2009 has proven to be a very busy year for the Team at Toll Liquid Distribution with
back-to-back tender opportunities which have resulted in above average conversion
rates. It has been a hard slog for the Team, but the result of over $30 million
per annum in new contracted revenue has made it worthwhile.

 MMG Century Mine and Toll
 Unite on Safety Program
 M
MG Century Mine and Toll recently united efforts
to further enhance safety for the logistics services
provided to MMG Century Mine and Port Operation.
Toll has had a long running group contract with MMG to
provide such services as:
n Container Freight from depots and ports around Australia
n Express Trailers from Townsville Off-Site Receiving
n Heavy Haulage
n Airfreight
n Pick Up and Deliveries around Australia
n Customs Clearance
n Warehouse Facilities in Townsville
n Fly In / Out Personnel on-site to manage the freight
and a Staging Depot in Cloncurry.
MMG Century Mine is located 410km northwest of
Cloncurry, QLD (1,195km west of Townsville). Karumba is
located 442km north of Cloncurry (780km west of Cairns)
on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Due to the remoteness of the mine and port sites, MMG
have located an off-site receipting warehouse at the NQX
depot in Townsville. All freight, except container freight,
is delivered to this depot, checked and receipted by MMG
staff and then loaded onto trailers by NQX operators.
This freight is then delivered to the mine site within 24 hours.
Up to four triple and quad road trains a day make their way
to the site. At the mine, NQX operators distribute the freight
and also unload and discharge the bulk and containerised
freight.
Given the volume of freight, the distances to travel, the
remoteness of the locations, the condition of the roads
and the people involved in the supply chain, there is
always a focus on delivering the goods safely in a
serviceable condition.
Recently the MMG Century Mine Supply Superintendent,
Ray Luff and his team, in conjunction with the team from
Toll (Craig Blyton – Toll Contract Manager, Lindsay
Porter – NQX Regional Manager, Dave Conroy – NQX
Cloncurry Branch Manager, Matt Lehr – NQX Townsville
Branch Manager and Dave Lahy – QRX Regional Manager)
jointly reviewed the operations and developed a number of
safety initiatives and programs ranging from revised scope
documents, a review of safe working procedures and
implemented agreed training. The review also recommended
the operation change to new prime movers using NQX
company drivers which commenced in October 09.
Lara Higson, MMG Century Mine Commercial Manager
and Ray Luff worked in cooperation with Toll Management
to implement and facilitate the revised measures to ensure
a safety first culture was paramount for all staff traversing
the MMG and Toll sites. Lara and Ray involved staff members
from across the logistics processes including staff from
Toll Century Mine, Townsville and Cloncurry branches to
help them understand the processes involved in working
on the mine site.
The management from Toll are extremely proud of the
strengthening of the existing relations with MMG, and
with all the staff involved in making this a safe and
lasting success. n

NQX Branch Profile – NQX Cloncurry
 L
ocated in the mining and cattle heartland of north
western Queensland is the small, yet pivotal township
of Cloncurry. Whilst small in stature, boasting a
population of 3,200 people, Cloncurry is the gateway
to many of NQX’s largest mining customers in Australia.
Environmentally, the area is a land of extremes with severe
seasonal flooding and droughts, and temperature variations
of over 35 degrees between winter and summer. NQX
Freight System has an established operation in Cloncurry
with around 15 permanent employees and operates from
a 10,000m2
terminal on the northern side of town.
NQX provides daily services to mining companies such as
Xstrata, BHP and MMG, travelling round trip distances of
over 800km per day on some of the more challenging roads
in Queensland. Adding to the complexity of this task is the

combinations of triple road trains and quads used in this
region, requiring highly skilled and experienced operators.
Due to its location, NQX Cloncurry also provides support
to other Toll business units. With its operation handling over
2,000 tonnes of freight per week, it is an essential link in the
greater NQX and Toll network.
Recently, NQX Freight System converted its mine services
to a fully managed company operation. This required the
purchase of several new Kenworth T908 prime movers
with service and maintenance support. This change
provides NQX’s major mining customers with a safe,
reliable and consistently high service operation and
continues to demonstrate the ongoing commitment
by NQX as a professional supplier of freight services
to the mining and associated industries. n

NQX Freight System – the Future is Here
I
n recent times, there has been
an ever increasing focus on the
environment and the effects of ‘Big
Business’ on the planet’s continued
survival. NQX has made the conscious
decision to take advantage of scientific
and engineering advancements in
vehicular technology available in
Australia in an attempt to limit the
impact on the environment and to
minimise NQX’s carbon footprint.
Euro 5 technology is being trialled in
Queensland. Should the trial prove to
be a success, Euro 5 technology with
its decreased carbon emissions and
fuel efficiencies may very well become
the future of NQX across Australia.
NQX continually embraces
environmentally friendly transportation
solutions for our customers. Sustainable
development is a major driving force
behind future expansions of the
business as well as a major focus
for many NQX customers.
NQX is a little different to many
other freight companies in that it
has a specialist linehaul unit within
the business, a separate group
which manages and analyses all
the linehaul runs.
“With linehaul small things can
make a big difference so we put an
incredible amount of planning into
our routes, driver changes, fuel
stops, and more,” said Richard
Thomas, NQX North Queensland
Manager.
As a case point, when Queensland
removed its 8c/litre subsidy on diesel,
NQX spent many hours reassessing
and reconfiguring routes into, out of,
and through the sunshine state to
minimise the cost impact to its
customers.
NQX offers services throughout
Queensland and the Northern Territory
as well as direct services to the major
capitals like Sydney, Adelaide, Perth
and Melbourne. The nature of NQX’s
business includes but is not limited
to offering express and general
freight services with change over
drivers delivering upwards of two
million tonnes of freight a year.
For this reason and many others, the
importance of having fuel efficient low
emissions vehicles is becoming an
increasing focus for NQX’s future
development.
The two new Euro 5 Mercedes
vehicles are based in Townsville,
a Queensland hub, which is the base
for at least 40 linehaul services per
week, involving everything from
single-trailer tautliners through to
quad and triple-trailer road trains
which cover a vast area from Mt Isa
to Cairns and down to Melbourne.
The two Actros have been fitted
with the 600 horsepower, 16 litre
Mercedes-Benz V8s. It means that
while they are currently operating
in B-Double configuration running
between Townsville and Cairns,
they can be up-rated to 120 tonnes
and used in road train applications.
“When buying a truck for up here
you also need to be confident it
can handle the climatic conditions.
With the rain, heat and humidity,
things are different,” Richard said.
1 Incident sensing
camera.
2 New NQX
Mercedes Euro 5
Trial Vehicle.
2
1
Other key reasons for selecting the
Actros were driver comfort, cabin
ergonomics and the Mercedes-Benz
focus on safety.
“For NQX safety is a big thing.
With Mercedes-Benz you get a
safety package you can’t always
get elsewhere, with lane sensing
technology and anti-collision
braking,” he said.
NQX fleet B-Doubles are speed limited
to 95 km/h. These trucks and others
in the fleet will also have incident
sensing cameras which are triggered
by horizontal or vertical g-forces.
The cameras will look inside and
outside the cabin and provide a
30 second snap shot of any incident
– 15 seconds before and after –
which the company uses for both
driver training and legal purposes.
“We do everything we can to avoid
accidents but if something happens
we study it and learn from it.” n

NQX Looks to the Future with its
 most Northern Branch in Queensland
 N
QX’s ongoing commitment
to the freight industry in
North Queensland along with
problematic wet seasons has seen
the construction of a new, modern,
purpose built freight terminal in Cairns.
Road freight facilities in far north
Queensland reached a new level in
September 2009 when NQX officially
opened its new Cairns terminal.
The new Cairns depot, constructed
by the BM Webb Group, was built at
the rear of the existing NQX terminal
in Lyons St, Cairns. The new facility
has 6,000m2
of undercover operational
area, compared with the older terminal
of 2,000m2
.
The operations are supported with a
modern 500m2
two story office facility
boasting state-of-the-art technology.
The terminal boasts on-site fuelling
facilities, an automated weigh bridge,
fully automated fire sprinklers and a
CCTV security system. This modern
day freight terminal completes the
picture of a company dedicated to
the ongoing improvement of service
to clients and safety to its employees.
Safety was paramount in the traffic
management plan of this new terminal
with the segregation of small vehicles
away from larger trucks, having all site
movements controlled by an automated
gate system.

Group General Manager, Greg
Miller, for achieving the milestone of
2 years without a single lost time
injury. The presentation was held
on-site with members of the Toll team,
customers and managers to celebrate
this great achievement. Greg said,
“this is an effort and achievement to
be proud of, with a site that handles
so many dangerous goods. It is very
impressive to note the results of such
a commitment to health and safety.”
New Zealand weight lifting champion,
Precious Mackenzie, has assisted
Toll with manual training and lifting
techniques which has contributed
greatly to this injury free record.
Chevron – a Toll client, praised and
congratulated the site in having a
significant focus on health and safety
within the business, and believes
that this is a main area where Toll
is in sync as a business partner.
General Manager Logistics, Warren
Boyes, says “this has been a health
and safety milestone, we hope to
continue this trend throughout the
rest of the Toll business.” On that note,
Toll NZ’s Tranzlink business will also
be celebrating some successes
across their business in terms of a
greatly improved health and safety
record and injury free sites. Look out
for these in later issues! n

Toll IPEC left its mark at the very glamorous event.
Our exhibitors’ area showcased flat screen TVs, showing
our interactive technology and fashion handling equipment.
We had a magnificent team of Toll NZ employees who spent
five full days presenting to potential customers and providing
our latest brand the optimum exposure during this heavily
publicised Toll NZ event. We also invited many of our loyal
customers and guests to attend events and fashion shows
to which Group General Manager, Greg Miller, said “we
are very excited to be able to showcase our latest addition
to the Toll NZ group, the feedback and customer uptake
has been exceptional.”
This successful Toll IPEC launch follows the official
commencement of the IPEC brand on September 1, 2009
nationwide in New Zealand. Greg said “it has taken many
years of planning, organisation and commitment from our
senior management team to turn this project on paper into
a completely operational company as another addition to
the Toll brand services on offer within New Zealand.”
“Our customers have been telling us, the only thing missing
in your suite of services is a parcels option.” So Toll NZ has
extended our commitment to bringing the best solutions
to all our customers supply chain and delivery requirements.
Some of the service values Toll IPEC New Zealand bring
to customers are: complete reliability in transit delivery
standards; online web-based label printing and distribution
management tools; track and trace through web services;
single consignment note production, plus a single invoice
for all Toll NZ transport services and a dedicated fleet of
Toll IPEC delivery vehicles.
National Operations Manager, Peter Witton, describes
the journey of turning this project into fruition as “challenging
and rewarding, I feel very privileged to have led the IPEC
operations team in NZ. The team involved have been great,
all challenges have been worked through positively and
efficiently.
“Karl Lesoa, our National Contact Centre Manager has
the team focused on service excellence. Dave Burndred,

n September 16 a number of Toll IPEC managers
supported a seminar in Canberra aimed at providing
information to Members of Parliament and Senators
entitled Today’s Trucks: The Use of Alternate Fuels for a
Greener Future.
The aim of the seminar was to inform Parliamentarians
and their staff of the technological advances that truck
manufacturers are now employing to manufacture CNG,
LNG and Ethanol fuelled trucks. Toll IPEC supported this
initiative as part of efforts to move to more environmentally

 Recognition for Fatality Free Friday
F
or the past two years, Toll IPEC has supported and
participated in Fatality Free Friday to raise awareness
about road safety issues.
The goal of Fatality Free Friday is to have no road crash
fatalities around Australia during the day and to prompt road
users to behave more safely every day. The first Fatality Free
Friday was held in Australia on April 27, 2007, coinciding
with the United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
The first international Fatality Free Friday took place in
Las Vegas on May 25, 2007.
This year Fatality Free Friday was on Friday 28 May. As part
of Toll IPEC’s awareness program, Peter Roberts from
Worksafe and Steve Stojanovski from VicRoads visited
Toll IPEC in Altona and spoke with drivers and staff about
good practice, legal responsibilities and road safety
and enforcement.
By way of a thank you, Don Mead, Toll IPEC’s National Risk
Manager arranged presentations to both organisations for
their assistance.
On Wednesday 19 August, Rod Johnston, Toll IPEC’s
Group General Manager and Don Mead visited Worksafe
Victoria to present the plaque to Worksafe in recognition
of their support for the Fatality Free Friday event.
Toll IPEC is keen to work closely with authorities such as
Worksafe and VicRoads to ensure we maintain the highest
possible standards of workplace and road safety. n

 Stream’s Supplier Conference 2009
S
tream’s first supplier conference, held on the Gold
Coast in 2004, attracted 85 delegates. In contrast,
this year’s conference, held on the Sunshine Coast,
was attended by over 150 delegates. Stream uses this
annual event as an opportunity to meet with its key
suppliers in a less formal environment to keep them
informed of Stream’s activities, industry trends and key
factors affecting the industry such as quality, colour
management and the environment.
Much of this year’s conference was dedicated to working
with the public sector and meeting customer expectations
in a challenging environment. Guest speakers included:
Domenica D’Andrea of the Victorian Government;
David De Garis of the National Australia Bank;
PJ Gould from Toll Group Business Development,
and personnel from conference sponsors such as
Canon Australia, the Graphic Arts Association
of Australia and PaperlinX Australia.
Domecica D’Andrea, Victorian Government Communications
and Contracts Advisor, spoke of the emerging trends of
servicing the Victorian Government. In 2007 Stream was
awarded the print contract which covers 11 government
agencies and according to D’Andrea, the contract has
made the printing procedure equal for all our suppliers.
“It’s a simpler process that is more transparent,” she said.
“It is much quicker and means the government officers are
not restricted by their procurement processes whilst still
ensuring value for money.”
Stream and suppliers have had a busy year following the
Victorian bushfires, requiring them to print a number of
emergency documents, often at very short notice. Stream
thanked suppliers for their diligence, commitment and
support over this devastating period.
Another feature of the event is presenting Stream’s Supplier
of the Year Awards to suppliers that have provided superior
service and performance over the last 12 months. Andrew
Price, General Manager of Stream presented the awards
thanking each supplier personally for their great efforts.
“This is the perfect opportunity to publicly recognise the
great work of our suppliers,” he said.
Awards are given in the colour, digital, envelopes, forms,
general, large format, unique products, web offset and
environmental excellence categories. n

started working on the dock in 1979.
He progressed to driving local trailers
and then decided he would like a
crack at driving interstate linehaul.
Paul took it upon himself to learn from
the experienced linehaul drivers of the
day and took regular trips during his
own time to learn the art in order to
secure his linehaul role. Paul now
drives between Sydney and Melbourne
most nights and he reckons he has a
fantastic job.
In 1987, Paul was driving a Kenworth
doing local trailer work. During a job at
a Coles warehouse in Port Melbourne,
he decided to take a photo of the truck
and trailer he was driving, while he was
waiting to be loaded.
Soon after, Paul was on a holiday at
Legian Beach in Bali and while there,
he remembered he had the photo
of the Kenworth tucked in his wallet.
(You can certainly tell he loves trucks
can’t you!). A spur of the moment
decision resulted in Paul getting one
of the local t-shirt printers to sketch
the truck from the photo and print
the sketch on a couple of t-shirts.
Paul has kindly donated his unique

BBEE legislation was introduced in South Africa in
2005 to promote wider black participation in the
economy. Under apartheid certain sections of the
community were excluded or discouraged from becoming
involved in business.
While some companies see BBBEE as a destination,
Toll Global Forwarding regards it as a journey. “We don’t
subscribe to a tick-the-box mentality,” says TGF Africa Chief
Executive, Vincent Magnus. “This isn’t an exercise in
compliance, it’s buying into the true spirit of empowerment.
We continue to improve our BBBEE status year on year.”
The BBBEE codes of good practice proposed guidelines
for redressing past imbalances through employment equity,
skills development, management control, preferential
procurement, enterprise development, corporate social
responsibility and ownership.
“Toll Global Forwarding has embraced numerous initiatives
and is committed to making BBBEE work,” says Vincent.
Companies with satisfactory BBBEE credentials are
welcome to tender for government business. Furthermore,
since preferential procurement is an important component
of BBBEE, corporate business actively seeks out service
providers with a good BBBEE scorecard. n

oll announced on Friday 23 October that TGF will
purchase the assets of ELG. The deal was completed
on Friday 30 October. The combined presence of
TGF and ELG in the Australian and New Zealand (ANZ)
markets will see TGF ranked second in sales alongside
Kuehne Nagel and behind DHL. Combined, TGF
and ELG in ANZ will employ 550 staff across 7 offices in
Australia and 7 offices in NZ. Our aim is to be the largest
forwarder in ANZ over the next two years.
TGF were already the largest forwarder of full containers
(FCL) to and from Australia and this acquisition further
increases those volumes. ELG are a major airfreight forwarder
Trans Tasman offering an express service which leads the
market. ELG are achieving a door-to-door service for large
volumes within 12 to 24 hours from multiple suppliers to
multiple consignees. Both TGF and ELG are major
forwarders of imported product from greater China into the
Australian and New Zealand markets, especially for the retail
sector. Customers that ELG service include Pumpkin
Patch, Bendon, Ezibuy, Air New Zealand, Glassons,
Gazal and many others.
ELG have various services outside forwarding. Over the
next few months we will decide how they should best be
structured with other Toll services including: courier;
warehousing in Auckland; parcel delivery in Auckland,
Sydney and Brisbane; and line haul transport in NZ.
In order to integrated TGF and ELG we will be working
closely with our people on property leases, office sizes and
IT systems. We are hoping to integrate the sites between
February and June 2010, which is our quiet period.
The ELG offering improves our depth of end-to-end supply
chain solutions, in particular, offering cross-dock warehousing
to retailers in China. This service typically involves the scan
pick and pack of various products into cartons, packs or
units. The product is then moved directly to state based
DCs in Australia or North/South Island DCs in New Zealand
or direct to retail point of sale. These services typically
reduce our customers’ transport and warehousing costs at
destination. There is also interest from major retailers and
customers in value added services in China. We are one of
only a small group of forwarders who can offer this service.
TGF and ELG also lead the market with our e-commerce
offering to customers. This is where we capture information
from our customers’ enterprise management systems
and add logistical and financial data. The TGF software
technology that facilitates integrated supply chains is
called iCON.
Finally we would like to welcome all the Express Logistics
staff to TGF and look forward to a successful integration
that builds on the strengths of each business. n

ver the past few years TGF has grown rapidly
through global acquisitions. This will continue as
the organisation builds a globally competitive
international freight forwarding business. Each of these very
successful independent companies have brought a range
of services and skills to the organisation that will be critical
to our future growth. The next phase in our development
is to coordinate our efforts across what is, effectively,
a patchwork of operations and to develop a global
network perspective.
TGF has big growth plans for the coming years and to
support these plans the organisation is quickly assembling
one of the strongest global product, marketing and sales
teams in the international freight forwarding business.
With a collective 200 years of experience spread across
some of the largest freight forwarding and express
businesses globally this formidable team will help drive
TGF into the top 10 freight forwarders in the world.
The Global Products, Marketing and Sales team will be
based in Singapore and have regional offices in the five
identified global regions: Africa; Americas; Asia; Australia

these regions will be headed up by an experienced industry
professional and report through to both their Regional CEOs
and to the TGF Products, Marketing and Sales Director,

In addition to the regional management structures there
will be globally focused product management, tender

Presentations to the Hong Kong Office sales staff were also

was second to none. New friendships created will ensure
that trade-lane development will continue to progress
across all the regions.
A short bus trip through the New Territories and across the
Chinese border, took the group to the city of Shenzen. With
a population approaching 14 million and with the main port
(Yantian), one of three servicing Shenzen, now almost equal
to Hong Kong in terms of number of containers moved.
A 2 hour plane trip to Shanghai and the group visited the
Cargo Services Logistics facility at Wen Chuan Road.
An impressive hanging garment facility with a “Value added
services” operation and many of the key customers identified
on the facility wall.
The group thoroughly enjoyed their visits to all the offices in
Asia and took the opportunity to thank all the managers and
staff that welcomed them enthusiastically and provided
information, transport and a number of lunches at all the
facilities concerned.
There is no doubt that this visit has provided a significant
insight for those outside of Asia into the capabilities that are
available for our customers and the management of their
supply chains. We all look forward to utilising our improved
knowledge with sales in the future. n

The main criteria of the task is ensuring the bike remains

n May 9, 2009, Toll Global Logistics organised a
senior management farewell party for our beloved
Ian and Gill McCormick.
Ian, who spearheaded our Commercial Department
following the acquisition of SembCorp Logistics in
June 2006, announced his retirement from Toll to return
to Australia to have more time with his family and friends.
Ian will be remembered fondly for his super dry wit and
sense of humour, and of course his Scottish accent and
fiscal traits.
Formerly Divisional Finance Controller for Toll North, Ian was
instrumental to many of Toll’s successful MA projects and
their integration. He was also a strong role model and
mentor to budding financial controllers and many GMs.
At the end of the evening, Wayne Hunt, CEO of Toll Global
Logistics, recognised the tremendous work and support
of Ian and Gill as part of the Toll Global Logistics team.
We wish them well for the future. n
Thank You, Ian

on Christmas Island in 2007, airport
traffic has more than doubled and
is continuing to grow. Combined with
this is the fact that the islands are
visited only once a week by ship and
anything else that is needed has to
be flown in from Australia.
PDL Toll manages the two airports
on behalf of the Attorney General’s

As well as the challenges of isolation,
the islands themselves offer up their
own challenges, including the annual

Christmas Island each year. These
crabs swarm over everything in their
path on a pilgrimage to two isolated
beaches where they breed. The only
relief from this is the fact that they are
just the small red crabs, and not the
other local crabs, the robber crabs,
known for their ability to crack
coconuts with their pincers.
The award of this contract reflects
PDL Toll’s growing reputation in

that face a similar range of challenges.

oll Mining Services Gladstone Depot has just
celebrated 2 years Recordable Injury (RI) Free.
We are constantly reminded of the potential dangers
of travelling on the roads, this coupled with the nature and
volume of the products that the Gladstone Depot transports
makes the 2 year celebration twice as sweet. The Gladstone
Depot co-ordinates and transports a variety of dangerous
goods, from solvent based fuels to sodium cyanide being
the most toxic.
The management team guided by Mike Elmer, General
Manager, and driven by Chris Yourell, Regional Manager,
have attributed this success to hard work and determination
by all its employees from the managers to the truck drivers
and their ability to work as a team to achieve the common
goal of an improved safety culture.

he last time the Mongolian Army mobilised a battalion,
Genghis Khan was in charge and they went on to
make history. This time around their ambitions are
a little less lofty and their cause a lot more peaceful.
As part of the international peacekeeping effort in Central
Africa, the Mongolian Army is sending troops from Ulaanbaatar
to N’Djamena, Chad. Helping them on their way is Mick
James, a movement control specialist from PDL Toll.
PDL Toll provides movement control consultants to liaise
between international peacekeeping organisations, troop
contributing countries and aircraft and marine contractors
to ensure that personnel, and equipment are transported
without incident. This means making sure all parties comply
 Postcard from Ulaanbaatar
with the terms of the contract and that all customs and
immigration requirements are met. It also means making
sure that all cargo is packed and loaded properly to ensure
it reaches its destination undamaged. This includes ensuring
that any explosive or dangerous materials or weapons are
packed and transported safely and in accordance with
international regulations so that nothing goes bang at
30,000 feet.
Mick James has found the Mongolian Army to be very
helpful and efficient in their preparations for the deployment
and has full confidence in their ability to deploy successfully.
He is less confident however about their ability to adapt to
a 60°C swing in temperature. Overnight temperatures in the
Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar plummet to well below -20°C
and reach -5°C during the day only if the sun is shining.
In their destination, N’Djamena, temperatures hover around
a balmy 40°C.
Mick had his own share of adapting to do on arrival in
Ulaanbaatar as his previous deployment was in Sierra
Leone in Western Africa. As one of PDL Toll’s movement
control specialists, Mick has had an itinerary that would
make any travel buff jealous: Egypt, Sierra Leone,
Bangladesh, Nepal, Tanzania, Malawi and now Mongolia.
PDL Toll has been providing movement coordination
consultants for peacekeeping missions for over five years
and has built up a reputation as an international leader in
the delivery of civilian logistics coordination, a reputation
that assists them in every other area of their business. n

n September 17, 2009 a new three year contract
was executed between Toll Mining Services, a part
of Toll Global Resources and Anglo Coal (Capcoal)
for the supply of on-site coal haulage, coal reject management,
stockpiling and road maintenance services worth in excess
of $45m revenue over three years.
The signing of this agreement signals a bright future for
the on-site mining services business acquired by Toll
from Korn Bulk Haulage back in 2005.
Mining Services General Manager, Mike Elmer said “This is
the first major long term contract signing since the purchase
of the Korn business back in 2005 and I couldn’t be happier
with the progress our on-site business has made since
a very challenging transition into the Toll Group. We have
restructured the business in an effort to meet the needs
of the market and to keep delivering on our promise to
our customers.”
The signing of the Anglo contract is a very interesting story
in itself. Back in early April 2008, Toll were given notice by
Anglo of being unsuccessful with our tender submission to
provide coal haulage services at the mine site. A week later
due to a change in circumstances on-site, Anglo requested
Toll’s assistance to provide three trucks and a front-end
loader for 3 weeks work and have been on-site ever since.
Initially, 13 staff and operators were employed, now there
are over 75 staff and operators employed at the site. “It is
a credit to the persistence of our staff in this business that
we got a start at Anglo back in April last year, especially
considering we had just been told of their unsuccessful
tender bid.”
The signing of this contract has provided an opportunity
for Toll to invest new capital in the business beginning with
two new Komatsu WA900 front-end loaders being ordered,
the first due for delivery prior to Christmas.
Toll Mining Services is now in a position to consolidate
its presence in the mining services market and is looking
for other opportunities to grow and expand its business.
“We have the processes and people in place now to
take this business to the next level. To this end we will
be aggressive in our pursuit of growth opportunities
within the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley coal
sectors. We will also target international expansion
opportunities to complement Toll Global Resources
marine services offering in
Asia.” In addition it opens up
new off road markets in as
we take the skills built in coal
haulage and ancillary services
into hard rock mining. n

n July 1, 2009, Toll acquired Perkins Shipping.
The acquisition brings to Toll coastal shipping
services throughout northern Australia and
international services between Darwin and Singapore
via Timor Leste. Since the acquisition of Perkins by Toll,
a number of significant changes have been made to the
business and its management.
Steve Brown (previously from Rio Tinto) has been appointed
to run the operation and will shortly relocate to Darwin to
take up his new role. Several other changes have also been
made to senior management roles within the business and
a restructure of some services is also underway.
Under Toll ownership, a number of studies have already been
conducted to assess existing services and to determine
whether improvements can be made to offer better and
more reliable services to Perkins existing customers.
Toll remains absolutely committed to Perkins traditional
coastal, community and international trades and is bringing
a real customer service focus to those existing businesses.
To compliment these services, additional Australian coastal
shipping services and offerings to PNG and other Asian
ports are also under development. Perkins already offers
a vital link to Toll Global Forwarding via its strategic hub and
existing services to Singapore. A number of existing
Toll clients have requested that additional services
be considered to suit their operations.
Greg Smith, Deputy General Manager of NQX describes
the interest from Toll’s customers: “Our customers
understand that goods can be packed by Toll Global
Forwarding in places such as China and India into
containers for direct store delivery in Australia. Those
containers can be fed into Perkins hub in Singapore by TGF
and delivered directly to Darwin by Perkins for distribution
throughout Australia by NQX. There is no need to open the
containers until they reach the store, warehouse, factory or
mine site. This is a huge plus for many of our clients.
“Similarly, existing Perkins customers realise that orders can
be placed with suppliers throughout Australia and beyond,
the freight transported to Darwin using Toll’s vast network
and placed on board a Perkins vessel for delivery. We are
actually seeing customers reassess their buying patterns
to take advantage of this integration.”
A review of the existing Perkins fleet is also underway.
Several proposals are being considered to improve the
make up of the existing fleet to ensure that Perkins can
provide reliable services and has adequate capacity for
future growth. This is likely to result in further investment
by Toll at a time when global vessel markets are soft and
the Australian dollar is very strong. This should provide
enduring benefits for Perkins services well into the future.
“We have seen a dramatic and very positive reaction
to Toll’s ownership from customers and staff alike” said
Greg Smith, “and with our plans to improve Perkins
existing services and provide further scope for growth,
we are very confident that the business will grow strongly
in the coming years.”
The course has been chartered and the sails are set.
Welcome aboard! n

ANZ acquires 100% of ING Australia
ANZ recently announced that it will acquire ING Group’s
51% shareholding in ING Australia and as a result take
full ownership of the company.
ING Australia is a specialist wealth management and
insurance business that manages one of the Toll Group
Super Plan’s, ING Corporate Super.
Since 2002 ANZ has held a 49% shareholding in ING
Australia as a joint venture arrangement with ING Group.
With the experience of the joint venture arrangement,
ANZ has gained a strong knowledge and understanding
of ING Australia and its operations. This acquisition is
a positive milestone for ING Australia and places it in
a strong position for the future.
ANZ has purchased ING Australia as part of a strategy to
grow the bank across Australia and Asia, and at the same
time ING Group has decided to reduce some of its
operations in Asia and the Pacific region. ANZ’s purchase of
ING Australia does not include ING Direct, the online bank.
What does this mean for Toll employees who
are in the ING Corporate Super Fund
Importantly, the ANZ acquisition of ING Australia will not
lead to any changes to the service and policy commitments
that the Toll Group currently has in place for your
superannuation.
ANZ ownership is a positive strategic change for ING
Australia that will facilitate change and support future
growth. ANZ is a leading bank in Australia and around
the world and is one of only eleven globally that holds
the AA rating.
Over the next twelve months ING Australia will continue
to operate under the ING brand while a new branding
is determined.
Looking to the future
This is an exciting opportunity for ING Australia as ANZ
is committed to growing its wealth management and
insurance business in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
The new ownership will not change your day-to-day
interactions with your superannuation provider. ING looks
forward to continuing to provide a leading and cost-effective
super solution to Toll Group employees.
Any questions?
For more information about your ING Corporate super
account, please visit the ING web portal from your

Toll Super Policy Committee Nominations /
Elections to be held in New Year.
Toll employees that are members of either the Toll Asgard
Superannuation Fund or ING Corporate Super can expect
to receive correspondence in the mail to your home address
very soon which will call for nominations for employee
representatives to sit on either of these Super Fund current
committee’s depending on the fund that you belong to.
Anyone who is a member of either ING or Asgard can
nominate as an employee representative. If more employee
nominations are received than the number of vacancies,
an election must be conducted by Toll (the employer) using
a ballot.
The time frame for this process will be over the next
few months.
Powers of a Policy Committee
The Policy Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the
Trustee of each fund.
Liability of the Policy Committee
The Policy Committee is only an advisory body, its members
are not liable for any recommendations or decisions made
to the Trustee.
So with this article we are just giving all fund members
of both these funds a heads up that we will be calling for
nominations for member representatives for both of these
Fund Toll Policy Committees.

capital, Kampala. The southern part of the country includes
a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is also bordered
by Kenya and Tanzania.
The Cotton On Foundation has joined forces with
St Bernard’s Parishes in Belmont (Geelong), and
Essendon, Victoria along with St Luke’s Parish in Mannya
with the combined goal to help the community become
self sufficient. A health clinic was constructed 2 years ago
bringing much needed medical care to the community which
has been devastated by HIV, malaria and tuberculosis.
In addition to the health centre, the charity is currently
undergoing the rebuilding of nurses’ homes and the
secondary school. The Cotton On Foundation, is also
building a dormitory at the school for 200 boys, a teachers’
house, a library and 2 new rooms for years 11 and 12.
Education for years 11 and 12 had previously not been
provided. There are 860 children on the site, including
280 secondary students, many of whom are being
sponsored by the charity.
Water is a major problem in the area, which has also been
addressed by the foundation. A dam has been constructed,
which will hold more than 10 million litres of water when full.
Once the rain arrives and the dam fills, it will solve the
community’s water problem.
Nigel Austin, CEO of Cotton On, and his staff make regular
trips to visit the community to monitor and assist progress
of the infrastructure. Dr Shannon from Geelong and
Father Peter Foley from St Bernard’s Parish Belmont
also regularly visit the people of Mannya.
The locals refer to the visitors as ‘Muzungu‘ which means
‘white person’ in many ‘Bantu’ languages of east, central
and south Africa. The two main languages spoken in
Uganda are English and Swahili. n
The Cotton On Foundation and Toll Global Forwarding teamed up to provide much

Logistics Cadetships – Encouraging Young
People into our Industry
 I
n 2008, four Toll business units partnered with TDT Victoria,
the Victorian Transport Logistics Industry Training
Advisory Board, to recruit exit year 12 students and place
them into a pilot two-year development program whereby
the cadets complete a Diploma of Logistics whilst in
full-time employment with Toll.
With funding received from the Department of Education,
Employment and Workplace Relations, TDT Victoria
recruited and matched the cadets with Toll IPEC, Toll
SPD, Toll Shipping and Extra Transport. Each business
provided their cadet with a mentor who worked with them
to ensure a successful two-year program. The pilot results
speak for themselves, with each cadet being offered full-time
positions after successful completion of their cadetship.
Toll IPEC
James Dimovski completed his cadetship program with
IPEC, with Geoff Jackson, Human Resources Manager,
as his mentor. James had achieved an impressive VCE
result but did not want to go on to University. Throughout
the cadetship James experienced many areas of the IPEC
business including linehaul, operational analysis, customer
service analysis, storage and dispatch of operational
uniforms and participated in other specific projects.
James achieved great results both in the workplace
and during the study blocks to achieve his Logistics
Diploma, and in 2010 will continue his employment
with IPEC in addition to commencing a Logistics Degree.
Toll SPD
Jarrod Bennetts was recruited into Toll SPD with
Guy Badman, Operations Manager Victoria, as mentor.
Jarred also achieved impressive VCE results and throughout
the two year Cadetship has proven himself to be an
exceptional cadet. His results during study blocks and
his outstanding growth and development at SPD is
acknowledged by those around him. Jarrod has been
offered a permanent position as Customer Service Officer
following graduation.
Toll Shipping
Ben Usher commenced his cadetship with Toll Shipping,
with Rod King, National Manager Logistics as his mentor.
Ben completed school in 2005 and had experienced the
transport industry through the family bus business. Looking
for a challenge, Ben was keen to move into the logistics
field. During his time at Toll Shipping, Ben has experienced
and enjoyed all aspects of freight preparation and was also
able to spend time at Toll Tasmania and Edwards Transport.
Ben will continue his role with Toll Shipping in 2010.
Extra Transport
Jason Schill is Extra Transport’s cadet with Bousy Atwa
as his mentor. Whilst completing year 12, Jason achieved
a Certificate III in warehousing, providing him with a sound
platform into the cadetship program with Extra Transport.
Jason has experienced the three divisions of Extra Transport
including Pestex Fumigation and Alliance, discovering
the industry has roles he had never previously heard of.
Jason intends completing a Logistics Degree in 2010.
TDT Victoria is recruiting both companies and cadets
for the 2010 program. If you would like more information

ost transport operators will read ‘Ruined Piano’ with
some concern, as the last thing we want to do is
ruin a piano, but in this case Toll IPEC was asked
to move a piano that was already well and truly ruined.
Ruined, neglected and devastated pianos are all taken
under the wing of West Australian composer, performer
Ross Bolleter. They come from sheds, paddocks,
abandoned theatres and shearing sheds all to be given
new life and sound by this unique musician.
Ross contacted Toll IPEC to see if we could assist in

to expose young musicians and others to a different style
of music. Ross works with instruments that most musicians
would not consider and manages to create his own blend

Sydney Olympic Park. Entertainment was provided by
Chris Cummins and Cash on Delivery (Johnny Cash
Australian style), who kept spirits up when the sunny
morning turned into a wet afternoon.
However the wet weather did not dampen any spirits with
a further $11,500 raised on the day through auction items
and a sum of $60,000 raised throughout the year, bringing
the total to $71,500.
The raised funds will be donated between two emergency
services, the Neonatal Emergency Transport Service
(NETS) who provide on the ground medical support and
Telstra Child Flight, an emergency helicopter retrieval

Toll Express Eastern Creek, would like to take this opportunity
to thank Charlie and Donna at Toll Logistics, the drivers
for their hard work over the two days, management for their
support, and a special big thank you to all the employees
at Toll Express Eastern Creek who continue to raise funds
for the cause.
An extended thank you and appreciation to our clients:
Church Dwight, Clorox, Masterpet and Shelta,
who kindly donated items for the auction.
We would also like to take this time to invite any other
Toll divisions who would like to join in next year’s convoy
occurring on October 24 or October 31, 2010 and help
raise money to ensure better care of our sick kids.
For further information please contact committee member

thank you all for your support. n

morning tea was held for families who are members of
HeartKids NSW, a not for profit organisation that supports
families whose children have heart disease. Kim, Howard’s
wife, works for this support group at the Children’s Hospital
Westmead speaking to families whose children are having
heart surgery or have been newly diagnosed.
1 in 100 children are born with a heart defect with 6 babies
being born every day in Australia. Their son Liam was born
with CHD (childhood heart disease) and has endured five
heart operations and a number of other surgeries as he
also has a syndrome.
Liam was recently selected for the NSW state soccer team
to attend the National Special Olympics in Adelaide in April
2010. At these games a team will be picked to go to Athens
in 2011 for the World Special Olympics. The Mackie family
would like to thank Toll for its donation towards getting the
team to Adelaide next year. n

These businesses are market leaders and the expertise they have built over the years, combined with the knowledge of the Japanese market that comes from our existing position in Footwork, gives us confidence in this acquisition. I am delighted that Pat Kearns who led the Toll IPEC transformation has agreed to head up Toll’s transition in Japan and will be working closely with Footwork’s senior management and customers. Nonetheless Toll’s ongoing growth and excellent financial performance throughout these difficult economic conditions could not be achieved without the dedicated support of our employees and contractors. On behalf of the board and the senior management team, thank you for your passion, drive and commitment. These are the qualities that Toll is bringing to its customer relationships in the 55 countries in which we operate. Finally, I would like to wish you and your family a wonderful and safe holiday season and a happy and successful New Year.  F or many companies around the world 2009 has been a horror year. Across the Toll Group, we have faced some significant challenges but we can finish the year with pride in our successes and great confidence in our future. While many of our competitors carry uncertainty into 2010 and continue to scale back their operations, we have the people, the skills and the balance sheet that will allow us to continue to grow. We will continue to expand our regional and global network. We will strengthen our operations outside of Australia as we tap into new fertile markets and reach critical economies of scale to reduce operating costs. The recently announced Group restructure (see page 3) is an important realignment of our integrated service offering and includes well deserved promotions for the new Divisional Directors. The acquisition of Footwork Express in Japan, a top ten logistics provider in the world’s second largest market, is further evidence of the Group’s commitment to its expansion program across the Asia Pacific. This acquisition is not only an important expansion of Toll’s express freight operation it is also a significant investment by an Australian company in the Japanese freight and logistics market. Footwork Express employs more than 5,000 people and generates revenue of approximately A$775 million in its national network. Toll has had a minority stake in the business since April 2006. The control that we will gain from the acquisition of the remaining equity will allow us to make the operational changes needed to secure the future success and growth of Footwork within Japan and the region.  Contents Managing Director’s Report Paul Little Managing Director Toll Group n 02 Message from Management
  • 3. Toll Today December–February 2009/10 Toll Liquid Distribution’s Emergency Response Training for Santos  T oll Liquid Distribution was recently awarded a contract worth over $1.2 million dollars annually to cart fuel- condensate from the Santos Gas Plant in Newmerella (near Orbost) to Geelong in Victoria. Paul Milo, National Business Development Manager stated that “from November, Toll Liquid Distribution expects to cart over 100,000 litres from the site daily using a combination of semi-trailer and B-Double tankers. However, there are a number of reasonably significant hurdles for the operations team to clear before we can get this task underway. It’s a sensitive location environmentally and we also need to be mindful of the local’s feelings towards tankers operating in their back yard.” As a consequence, David Love, National Operations Manager arranged to visit the site to complete a risk assessment and confirm the best way to undertake the activity whilst minimising Toll’s impact in the local area. Given the potential concern from locals about the tankers, David decided that before operations would commence he would test the emergency response from Toll and the local authorities. He enlisted the help of local Police and CFA Brigades to arrange a combined Emergency Response Exercise simulating a truck versus utility accident. The exercise involved local brigades from Cann Valley, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Marlo, Orbost and Wairewa. The CFA were paged to the scene and practised how to assess the situation from a safe distance before members were kitted up in breathing apparatus to undertake the simulated rescue of the utility driver under the protection of hose-lines from the attending appliances. The Brigades then simulated a burning tanker scenario where the use of water to reduce heat and foam to extinguish the fire was practised. Given the remote location, fire hydrants were not available so appliances not directly involved in fighting the simulated fire were shuttled via a local dam adding a further degree of realism and complexity to the activity. Toll employees were also on-hand to provide advice on the best way to contain spilt product and protect the immediate environment as well as learn lessons from the exercise themselves. The consensus from all who attended the activity was that valuable knowledge was gained and that the practical exercise was far more constructive than any amount of theory on how to respond to such an emergency. n  New Toll Structure  T he future success of Toll depends on our ability to grow dynamically into our chosen regional and global markets. Our organisation needs to be structured to enable our key service offerings to be sold to customers and industries who want global solutions. These latest changes are aimed at further aligning key businesses within the Group to achieve this. The new structure will be effective January 1, 2010 with operational divisions shown below. n Footwork Japan will report to Corporate during integration phase. • 4. Shell Distribution  O ne of the notable new business wins for the year was the cartage contract for Shell Australia. Toll Liquid Distribution is now responsible for approximately 50% of Shell’s subcontracted cartage work in Victoria and Queensland for the next three years with the potential to extend that out to at least five years. The Team has had no time to celebrate the win however, as time lines were tight and it was imperative that Toll guaranteed supply continuity during the critical transition phase. David Love’s team was able to successfully integrate a new Queensland Branch Manager, 49 new drivers and 19 prime movers and trailer sets including both tri-axle semi-trailers, and five 19m B-Double sets into the existing business all within a period of about three months. Given the short time frame, almost all aspects of the transition were on the project’s critical path, but none more so than the new tankers. To ensure that Toll were able to achieve the required milestones, they decided to introduce ‘paint free’ tankers into the fleet utilising polished aluminium and a full vinyl livery which trimmed almost 120 days off the manufacturing schedule whilst also delivering a very professional looking product. Consequently, the bulk of the transition was completed on time and went off without a hitch despite the need to also find a few ‘spare’ trailers that could be swung into action a few weeks early in Geelong. David Love stated that he was “really proud of the whole team – they worked really well together enabling a very successful implementation and ensured that Toll was also able to hit our KPI in the November review.” In particular David wanted to acknowledge the extra efforts put in by the administration staff: Helen Smith, Maureen Tillotson and Kim Donaldson; the driver trainers: Paul Hendrie and Merv McKee; and the bulk fuel schedulers: Mark Wandel and Brett McPhail who were all stretched well beyond the normal call of duty in order to achieve what was a fantastic outcome for the business. Other contracted work awarded to Toll Liquid Distribution during 2009 included BOC Gases ($19M pa), Cargill Australia ($4M pa) and Santos Ltd ($1.2M pa). The team is now looking forward to an equally busy and challenging year in 2010. n 1 Kenworth T408SAR and tanker. 2 David Love – TLD National Operations Manager. 2 Toll Liquid Distribution Wins Contract 2009 has proven to be a very busy year for the Team at Toll Liquid Distribution with back-to-back tender opportunities which have resulted in above average conversion rates. It has been a hard slog for the Team, but the result of over $30 million per annum in new contracted revenue has made it worthwhile. 04 Specialised and Domestic Freight 1
  • 5. Toll Today December–February 2009/10 4  MMG Century Mine and Toll  Unite on Safety Program  M MG Century Mine and Toll recently united efforts to further enhance safety for the logistics services provided to MMG Century Mine and Port Operation. Toll has had a long running group contract with MMG to provide such services as: n Container Freight from depots and ports around Australia n Express Trailers from Townsville Off-Site Receiving n Heavy Haulage n Airfreight n Pick Up and Deliveries around Australia n Customs Clearance n Warehouse Facilities in Townsville n Fly In / Out Personnel on-site to manage the freight and a Staging Depot in Cloncurry. MMG Century Mine is located 410km northwest of Cloncurry, QLD (1,195km west of Townsville). Karumba is located 442km north of Cloncurry (780km west of Cairns) on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Due to the remoteness of the mine and port sites, MMG have located an off-site receipting warehouse at the NQX depot in Townsville. All freight, except container freight, is delivered to this depot, checked and receipted by MMG staff and then loaded onto trailers by NQX operators. This freight is then delivered to the mine site within 24 hours. Up to four triple and quad road trains a day make their way to the site. At the mine, NQX operators distribute the freight and also unload and discharge the bulk and containerised freight. Given the volume of freight, the distances to travel, the remoteness of the locations, the condition of the roads and the people involved in the supply chain, there is always a focus on delivering the goods safely in a serviceable condition. Recently the MMG Century Mine Supply Superintendent, Ray Luff and his team, in conjunction with the team from Toll (Craig Blyton – Toll Contract Manager, Lindsay Porter – NQX Regional Manager, Dave Conroy – NQX Cloncurry Branch Manager, Matt Lehr – NQX Townsville Branch Manager and Dave Lahy – QRX Regional Manager) jointly reviewed the operations and developed a number of safety initiatives and programs ranging from revised scope documents, a review of safe working procedures and implemented agreed training. The review also recommended the operation change to new prime movers using NQX company drivers which commenced in October 09. Lara Higson, MMG Century Mine Commercial Manager and Ray Luff worked in cooperation with Toll Management to implement and facilitate the revised measures to ensure a safety first culture was paramount for all staff traversing the MMG and Toll sites. Lara and Ray involved staff members from across the logistics processes including staff from Toll Century Mine, Townsville and Cloncurry branches to help them understand the processes involved in working on the mine site. The management from Toll are extremely proud of the strengthening of the existing relations with MMG, and with all the staff involved in making this a safe and lasting success. n 4 Safety Workshop MMG Century Mine: Lindsay Porter (NQX Regional Manager); Craig Blyton (Toll Contract Manager); Dave Lahy (QRX Regional Manager). 5 NQX Prime Mover at NQX Cloncurry: Lindsay Porter, Ray Luff (MMG Century Mine – Supply Superintendent); Craig Blyton. 3  NQX Branch Profile – NQX Cloncurry  L ocated in the mining and cattle heartland of north western Queensland is the small, yet pivotal township of Cloncurry. Whilst small in stature, boasting a population of 3,200 people, Cloncurry is the gateway to many of NQX’s largest mining customers in Australia. Environmentally, the area is a land of extremes with severe seasonal flooding and droughts, and temperature variations of over 35 degrees between winter and summer. NQX Freight System has an established operation in Cloncurry with around 15 permanent employees and operates from a 10,000m2 terminal on the northern side of town. NQX provides daily services to mining companies such as Xstrata, BHP and MMG, travelling round trip distances of over 800km per day on some of the more challenging roads in Queensland. Adding to the complexity of this task is the 3 NQX Cloncurry – Darryl Williams. combinations of triple road trains and quads used in this region, requiring highly skilled and experienced operators. Due to its location, NQX Cloncurry also provides support to other Toll business units. With its operation handling over 2,000 tonnes of freight per week, it is an essential link in the greater NQX and Toll network. Recently, NQX Freight System converted its mine services to a fully managed company operation. This required the purchase of several new Kenworth T908 prime movers with service and maintenance support. This change provides NQX’s major mining customers with a safe, reliable and consistently high service operation and continues to demonstrate the ongoing commitment by NQX as a professional supplier of freight services to the mining and associated industries. n 5 05 Specialised and Domestic Freight
  • 6.  NQX Freight System – the Future is Here I n recent times, there has been an ever increasing focus on the environment and the effects of ‘Big Business’ on the planet’s continued survival. NQX has made the conscious decision to take advantage of scientific and engineering advancements in vehicular technology available in Australia in an attempt to limit the impact on the environment and to minimise NQX’s carbon footprint. Euro 5 technology is being trialled in Queensland. Should the trial prove to be a success, Euro 5 technology with its decreased carbon emissions and fuel efficiencies may very well become the future of NQX across Australia. NQX continually embraces environmentally friendly transportation solutions for our customers. Sustainable development is a major driving force behind future expansions of the business as well as a major focus for many NQX customers. NQX is a little different to many other freight companies in that it has a specialist linehaul unit within the business, a separate group which manages and analyses all the linehaul runs. “With linehaul small things can make a big difference so we put an incredible amount of planning into our routes, driver changes, fuel stops, and more,” said Richard Thomas, NQX North Queensland Manager. As a case point, when Queensland removed its 8c/litre subsidy on diesel, NQX spent many hours reassessing and reconfiguring routes into, out of, and through the sunshine state to minimise the cost impact to its customers. NQX offers services throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory as well as direct services to the major capitals like Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. The nature of NQX’s business includes but is not limited to offering express and general freight services with change over drivers delivering upwards of two million tonnes of freight a year. For this reason and many others, the importance of having fuel efficient low emissions vehicles is becoming an increasing focus for NQX’s future development. The two new Euro 5 Mercedes vehicles are based in Townsville, a Queensland hub, which is the base for at least 40 linehaul services per week, involving everything from single-trailer tautliners through to quad and triple-trailer road trains which cover a vast area from Mt Isa to Cairns and down to Melbourne. The two Actros have been fitted with the 600 horsepower, 16 litre Mercedes-Benz V8s. It means that while they are currently operating in B-Double configuration running between Townsville and Cairns, they can be up-rated to 120 tonnes and used in road train applications. “When buying a truck for up here you also need to be confident it can handle the climatic conditions. With the rain, heat and humidity, things are different,” Richard said. 1 Incident sensing camera. 2 New NQX Mercedes Euro 5 Trial Vehicle. 2 1 Other key reasons for selecting the Actros were driver comfort, cabin ergonomics and the Mercedes-Benz focus on safety. “For NQX safety is a big thing. With Mercedes-Benz you get a safety package you can’t always get elsewhere, with lane sensing technology and anti-collision braking,” he said. NQX fleet B-Doubles are speed limited to 95 km/h. These trucks and others in the fleet will also have incident sensing cameras which are triggered by horizontal or vertical g-forces. The cameras will look inside and outside the cabin and provide a 30 second snap shot of any incident – 15 seconds before and after – which the company uses for both driver training and legal purposes. “We do everything we can to avoid accidents but if something happens we study it and learn from it.” n 06 Specialised and Domestic Freight

The goal of Fatality Free Friday is to have no road crash fatalities around Australia during the day and to prompt road users to behave more safely every day. The first Fatality Free Friday was held in Australia on April 27, 2007, coinciding with the United Nations Global Road Safety Week. The first international Fatality Free Friday took place in Las Vegas on May 25, 2007. This year Fatality Free Friday was on Friday 28 May. In contrast, this year’s conference, held on the Sunshine Coast, was attended by over 150 delegates. Stream uses this annual event as an opportunity to meet with its key suppliers in a less formal environment to keep them informed of Stream’s activities, industry trends and key factors affecting the industry such as quality, colour management and the environment. Much of this year’s conference was dedicated to working with the public sector and meeting customer expectations in a challenging environment. Guest speakers included: Domenica D’Andrea of the Victorian Government; David De Garis of the National Australia Bank; PJ Gould from Toll Group Business Development, and personnel from conference sponsors such as Canon Australia, the Graphic Arts Association of Australia and PaperlinX Australia. Domecica D’Andrea, Victorian Government Communications and Contracts Advisor, spoke of the emerging trends of servicing the Victorian Government. In 2007 Stream was awarded the print contract which covers 11 government agencies and according to D’Andrea, the contract has made the printing procedure equal for all our suppliers. “It’s a simpler process that is more transparent,” she said. “It is much quicker and means the government officers are not restricted by their procurement processes whilst still ensuring value for money.” Stream and suppliers have had a busy year following the Victorian bushfires, requiring them to print a number of emergency documents, often at very short notice. Stream thanked suppliers for their diligence, commitment and support over this devastating period. Another feature of the event is presenting Stream’s Supplier of the Year Awards to suppliers that have provided superior service and performance over the last 12 months. Andrew Price, General Manager of Stream presented the awards thanking each supplier personally for their great efforts. “This is the perfect opportunity to publicly recognise the great work of our suppliers,” he said. Toll AutoLogistics ‘Bike Trike’  F ollowing on from the success of the Toll Autologistics Flatpack car carriers in reducing the risk of injury to our workers as well as reducing transit damage to our client’s vehicles, a decision was made to focus on another age old problem for our industry – how do we transport motorcycles successfully, without causing injury to our people or damage to the bikes? The main criteria of the task is ensuring the bike remains stable enough not to fall over at any stage during transit. The solution was to build a trolley to which the bike would be secured whilst still allowing it to be moved around with 1 Bike Trike. 2 Bike secured to trike being winched on to tilt tray. 3 Bike being wheeled around depot secured to trike. 4 Bike secured to trike secured to pallet. minimal amount of effort. The trolley also needs to be able to be used from the time we pick the bike up from the customer until we return it to the customer, whilst catering for all sizes of motorcycles from the Peewee 50cc to the largest Harley Davidson and the weekend dirt bike. The trolley is totally adjustable to accommodate all the various bike sizes. The final prototype known as the ‘Bike Trike’ shown here has successfully completed trials between residence Brisbane to residence Perth and return, and will now go into production. The design was developed by Toll AutoLogistics. n  O n May 9, 2009, Toll Global Logistics organised a senior management farewell party for our beloved Ian and Gill McCormick. Ian, who spearheaded our Commercial Department following the acquisition of SembCorp Logistics in June 2006, announced his retirement from Toll to return to Australia to have more time with his family and friends. Ian will be remembered fondly for his super dry wit and sense of humour, and of course his Scottish accent and fiscal traits. Formerly Divisional Finance Controller for Toll North, Ian was instrumental to many of Toll’s successful MA projects and their integration. He was also a strong role model and mentor to budding financial controllers and many GMs. At the end of the evening, Wayne Hunt, CEO of Toll Global Logistics, recognised the tremendous work and support of Ian and Gill as part of the Toll Global Logistics team. • 24. from Christmas Island S ince the establishment of the Australian Government Immigration Detention Centre on Christmas Island in 2007, airport traffic has more than doubled and is continuing to grow. Combined with this is the fact that the islands are visited only once a week by ship and anything else that is needed has to be flown in from Australia. PDL Toll manages the two airports on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department and provides airport management, security services and everything else required to run an international airport. As well as the challenges of isolation, the islands themselves offer up their own challenges, including the annual migration of 120 million red crabs on Christmas Island each year. These crabs swarm over everything in their path on a pilgrimage to two isolated beaches where they breed. The only relief from this is the fact that they are just the small red crabs, and not the other local crabs, the robber crabs, known for their ability to crack coconuts with their pincers. The award of this contract reflects PDL Toll’s growing reputation in aviation management and remote logistics. This reputation has been built on the experience of managing aviation solutions in the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste, locations that face a similar range of challenges. The contract was awarded in August of this year with operations commencing on October 1. We are constantly reminded of the potential dangers of travelling on the roads, this coupled with the nature and volume of the products that the Gladstone Depot transports makes the 2 year celebration twice as sweet. The Gladstone Depot co-ordinates and transports a variety of dangerous goods, from solvent based fuels to sodium cyanide being the most toxic. The management team guided by Mike Elmer, General Manager, and driven by Chris Yourell, Regional Manager, have attributed this success to hard work and determination by all its employees from the managers to the truck drivers and their ability to work as a team to achieve the common goal of an improved safety culture. • 26.  T he last time the Mongolian Army mobilised a battalion, Genghis Khan was in charge and they went on to make history. This time around their ambitions are a little less lofty and their cause a lot more peaceful. As part of the international peacekeeping effort in Central Africa, the Mongolian Army is sending troops from Ulaanbaatar to N’Djamena, Chad. Helping them on their way is Mick James, a movement control specialist from PDL Toll. PDL Toll provides movement control consultants to liaise between international peacekeeping organisations, troop contributing countries and aircraft and marine contractors to ensure that personnel, and equipment are transported without incident. This means making sure all parties comply  Postcard from Ulaanbaatar with the terms of the contract and that all customs and immigration requirements are met. It also means making sure that all cargo is packed and loaded properly to ensure it reaches its destination undamaged. This includes ensuring that any explosive or dangerous materials or weapons are packed and transported safely and in accordance with international regulations so that nothing goes bang at 30,000 feet. Mick James has found the Mongolian Army to be very helpful and efficient in their preparations for the deployment and has full confidence in their ability to deploy successfully. He is less confident however about their ability to adapt to a 60°C swing in temperature. Overnight temperatures in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar plummet to well below -20°C and reach -5°C during the day only if the sun is shining. In their destination, N’Djamena, temperatures hover around a balmy 40°C. Mick had his own share of adapting to do on arrival in Ulaanbaatar as his previous deployment was in Sierra Leone in Western Africa. As one of PDL Toll’s movement control specialists, Mick has had an itinerary that would make any travel buff jealous: Egypt, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tanzania, Malawi and now Mongolia. PDL Toll has been providing movement coordination consultants for peacekeeping missions for over five years and has built up a reputation as an international leader in the delivery of civilian logistics coordination, a reputation that assists them in every other area of their business. n 1 PDL Toll movement control specialist Mick James advising Mongolian Army personnel in preparation for their deployment to N’Djamena, Chad. 1 26 Global Resources
  • 27. Toll Today December–February 2009/10  D uring the month formerly known as November, PDL Toll staff from all corners of the globe mobilised their moustaches in support of men’s health. Movember is an initiative where men are sponsored to grow moustaches for a month to raise funds and awareness of Men’s health issues. In 2009 the event raised funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue, the national depression initiative. Team PDL Toll Mogistics had 56 guys putting their money  Movember Madness where their mouth is, or just above it, to grow magnificent moustaches for the cause. It was not just all about the guys though, but a real team effort with everyone getting involved in organising events and collecting donations. The efforts of PDL Toll’s Timor Leste, Solomon Islands, Central African and Australian offices, in combination with Helicorp and QSI, raised a grand total of $15,807 and produced some very memorable moustaches along the way. Well done everyone. n O n September 17, 2009 a new three year contract was executed between Toll Mining Services, a part of Toll Global Resources and Anglo Coal (Capcoal) for the supply of on-site coal haulage, coal reject management, stockpiling and road maintenance services worth in excess of $45m revenue over three years. The signing of this agreement signals a bright future for the on-site mining services business acquired by Toll from Korn Bulk Haulage back in 2005. Mining Services General Manager, Mike Elmer said “This is the first major long term contract signing since the purchase of the Korn business back in 2005 and I couldn’t be happier with the progress our on-site business has made since a very challenging transition into the Toll Group. We have restructured the business in an effort to meet the needs of the market and to keep delivering on our promise to our customers.” The signing of the Anglo contract is a very interesting story in itself. Back in early April 2008, Toll were given notice by Anglo of being unsuccessful with our tender submission to provide coal haulage services at the mine site. A week later due to a change in circumstances on-site, Anglo requested Toll’s assistance to provide three trucks and a front-end loader for 3 weeks work and have been on-site ever since. Initially, 13 staff and operators were employed, now there are over 75 staff and operators employed at the site. “It is a credit to the persistence of our staff in this business that we got a start at Anglo back in April last year, especially considering we had just been told of their unsuccessful tender bid.” The signing of this contract has provided an opportunity for Toll to invest new capital in the business beginning with two new Komatsu WA900 front-end loaders being ordered, the first due for delivery prior to Christmas. Toll Mining Services is now in a position to consolidate its presence in the mining services market and is looking for other opportunities to grow and expand its business. “We have the processes and people in place now to take this business to the next level. To this end we will be aggressive in our pursuit of growth opportunities within the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley coal sectors. We will also target international expansion opportunities to complement Toll Global Resources marine services offering in Asia.” In addition it opens up new off road markets in as we take the skills built in coal haulage and ancillary services into hard rock mining. n Toll Mining Services Signs New 3 Year Contract with Anglo Coal Global Resources 27
  • 28.  O n July 1, 2009, Toll acquired Perkins Shipping. The acquisition brings to Toll coastal shipping services throughout northern Australia and international services between Darwin and Singapore via Timor Leste. Since the acquisition of Perkins by Toll, a number of significant changes have been made to the business and its management. Steve Brown (previously from Rio Tinto) has been appointed to run the operation and will shortly relocate to Darwin to take up his new role. Several other changes have also been made to senior management roles within the business and a restructure of some services is also underway. Under Toll ownership, a number of studies have already been conducted to assess existing services and to determine whether improvements can be made to offer better and more reliable services to Perkins existing customers. Toll remains absolutely committed to Perkins traditional coastal, community and international trades and is bringing a real customer service focus to those existing businesses. To compliment these services, additional Australian coastal shipping services and offerings to PNG and other Asian ports are also under development. Perkins already offers a vital link to Toll Global Forwarding via its strategic hub and existing services to Singapore. A number of existing Toll clients have requested that additional services be considered to suit their operations. Greg Smith, Deputy General Manager of NQX describes the interest from Toll’s customers: “Our customers understand that goods can be packed by Toll Global Forwarding in places such as China and India into containers for direct store delivery in Australia. Those containers can be fed into Perkins hub in Singapore by TGF and delivered directly to Darwin by Perkins for distribution throughout Australia by NQX. There is no need to open the containers until they reach the store, warehouse, factory or mine site. This is a huge plus for many of our clients. “Similarly, existing Perkins customers realise that orders can be placed with suppliers throughout Australia and beyond, the freight transported to Darwin using Toll’s vast network and placed on board a Perkins vessel for delivery. We are actually seeing customers reassess their buying patterns to take advantage of this integration.” A review of the existing Perkins fleet is also underway. Several proposals are being considered to improve the make up of the existing fleet to ensure that Perkins can provide reliable services and has adequate capacity for future growth. This is likely to result in further investment by Toll at a time when global vessel markets are soft and the Australian dollar is very strong. This should provide enduring benefits for Perkins services well into the future. “We have seen a dramatic and very positive reaction to Toll’s ownership from customers and staff alike” said Greg Smith, “and with our plans to improve Perkins existing services and provide further scope for growth, we are very confident that the business will grow strongly in the coming years.” The course has been chartered and the sails are set. Toll Today December–February 2009/10  corporate super ANZ acquires 100% of ING Australia ANZ recently announced that it will acquire ING Group’s 51% shareholding in ING Australia and as a result take full ownership of the company. ING Australia is a specialist wealth management and insurance business that manages one of the Toll Group Super Plan’s, ING Corporate Super. Since 2002 ANZ has held a 49% shareholding in ING Australia as a joint venture arrangement with ING Group. With the experience of the joint venture arrangement, ANZ has gained a strong knowledge and understanding of ING Australia and its operations. This acquisition is a positive milestone for ING Australia and places it in a strong position for the future. ANZ has purchased ING Australia as part of a strategy to grow the bank across Australia and Asia, and at the same time ING Group has decided to reduce some of its operations in Asia and the Pacific region. ANZ’s purchase of ING Australia does not include ING Direct, the online bank. What does this mean for Toll employees who are in the ING Corporate Super Fund Importantly, the ANZ acquisition of ING Australia will not lead to any changes to the service and policy commitments that the Toll Group currently has in place for your superannuation. ANZ ownership is a positive strategic change for ING Australia that will facilitate change and support future growth. ANZ is a leading bank in Australia and around the world and is one of only eleven globally that holds the AA rating. Over the next twelve months ING Australia will continue to operate under the ING brand while a new branding is determined. Looking to the future This is an exciting opportunity for ING Australia as ANZ is committed to growing its wealth management and insurance business in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The new ownership will not change your day-to-day interactions with your superannuation provider. A health clinic was constructed 2 years ago bringing much needed medical care to the community which has been devastated by HIV, malaria and tuberculosis. In addition to the health centre, the charity is currently undergoing the rebuilding of nurses’ homes and the secondary school. The Cotton On Foundation, is also building a dormitory at the school for 200 boys, a teachers’ house, a library and 2 new rooms for years 11 and 12. Amongst the attendees were wives and families of Defence Members who lost their lives in Afghanistan and who benefit greatly from Legacy. Toll Transitions donated to this worthwhile cause and was well represented by staff members from its Brisbane Office. Those in attendance were Rose Aston, Kerry and David Dlask, Mary Jackson and Paul Hayllar, National Defence Account Manager. Toll Transitions also invited several key Defence representatives to join the staff at the Toll Transitions table. The Toll Transitions team was also fortunate enough to meet Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston AC. Conversation turned to the important role Toll Transitions plays in the Removal process of Defence members across the country and the world. The MC for the evening was Karl Stefanovic from Channel Nine’s Today Show, who donated his time free of charge. • 32. 32 Logistics Cadetships – Encouraging Young People into our Industry  I n 2008, four Toll business units partnered with TDT Victoria, the Victorian Transport Logistics Industry Training Advisory Board, to recruit exit year 12 students and place them into a pilot two-year development program whereby the cadets complete a Diploma of Logistics whilst in full-time employment with Toll. With funding received from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, TDT Victoria recruited and matched the cadets with Toll IPEC, Toll SPD, Toll Shipping and Extra Transport. Each business provided their cadet with a mentor who worked with them to ensure a successful two-year program. The pilot results speak for themselves, with each cadet being offered full-time positions after successful completion of their cadetship. Toll IPEC James Dimovski completed his cadetship program with IPEC, with Geoff Jackson, Human Resources Manager, as his mentor. James had achieved an impressive VCE result but did not want to go on to University. Throughout the cadetship James experienced many areas of the IPEC business including linehaul, operational analysis, customer service analysis, storage and dispatch of operational uniforms and participated in other specific projects. James achieved great results both in the workplace and during the study blocks to achieve his Logistics Diploma, and in 2010 will continue his employment with IPEC in addition to commencing a Logistics Degree. Toll SPD Jarrod Bennetts was recruited into Toll SPD with Guy Badman, Operations Manager Victoria, as mentor. Jarred also achieved impressive VCE results and throughout the two year Cadetship has proven himself to be an exceptional cadet. His results during study blocks and his outstanding growth and development at SPD is acknowledged by those around him. Jarrod has been offered a permanent position as Customer Service Officer following graduation. Toll Shipping Ben Usher commenced his cadetship with Toll Shipping, with Rod King, National Manager Logistics as his mentor. Ben completed school in 2005 and had experienced the transport industry through the family bus business. Looking for a challenge, Ben was keen to move into the logistics field. During his time at Toll Shipping, Ben has experienced and enjoyed all aspects of freight preparation and was also able to spend time at Toll Tasmania and Edwards Transport. Ruined, neglected and devastated pianos are all taken under the wing of West Australian composer, performer Ross Bolleter. They come from sheds, paddocks, abandoned theatres and shearing sheds all to be given new life and sound by this unique musician. Ross contacted Toll IPEC to see if we could assist in transporting one of his ‘Ruined Piano’s’ from Perth to Melbourne for a concert being held for the Australian National Academy of Music. The program was designed to expose young musicians and others to a different style of music. Ross works with instruments that most musicians would not consider and manages to create his own blend of special music. A Ruined Piano 1 Ross Bolleter at the “ruined” piano. Many thanks to Brian Green (WA Fleet Manager) who looked after this movement from Perth and Darren Patrick (Melbourne Freight Manager) who coordinated handling and delivery in Altona. Louise Godwin from the Australian National Academy of Music said, “I would also like to say thank you for your assistance, and the help of your staff, during the past week or so. Both Florin (Avram) and your driver have been understanding and extremely helpful, and our experience working with Toll IPEC has been extremely positive.” Ross called recently to thank us again for our support. He said his piano arrived in good shape. Well as good as one might expect for a ‘Ruined Piano.’ n 1 Community
  • 33. Toll Today December–February 2009/10  T his event takes 12 months of solid planning but all came together on 25 October when the 18th Annual Convoy for Kids took place in Sydney. With fundraising efforts throughout the year with BBQs and raffles to raise further funds to support a cause that seeks to raise money for sick and needy children, it was great news when Toll Express Eastern Creek received the honour of entering a triple trailer which on the day was second in the convoy to lead. With the announcement of Toll Express’ involvement on the day, we decided to gather other Toll divisions to join us in leading the convoy and represent Toll. Toll Logistics Minchinbury and Toll Fast quickly came on board and by the end Toll had 24 vehicles participating on the day. After polishing the vehicles the day before, approximately 800 vehicles from various companies and motor clubs, drivers and family members arrived at Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood, NSW at 5am for a hearty BBQ and a quick brief. Throughout the day there were smiles on everyone’s faces, from drivers to the kids who accompanied the convoy, and horns blaring, as the convoy made its way to the Sydney Olympic Park. Entertainment was provided by Chris Cummins and Cash on Delivery (Johnny Cash Australian style), who kept spirits up when the sunny morning turned into a wet afternoon. However the wet weather did not dampen any spirits with a further $11,500 raised on the day through auction items and a sum of $60,000 raised throughout the year, bringing the total to $71,500. The raised funds will be donated between two emergency services, the Neonatal Emergency Transport Service (NETS) who provide on the ground medical support and Telstra Child Flight, an emergency helicopter retrieval A Sea of Green –Toll Express Leads the Way in the18th Annual Convoy for Kids service that transport critically ill children and babies from regional NSW and ACT to lifesaving medical care. Toll Express Eastern Creek, would like to take this opportunity to thank Charlie and Donna at Toll Logistics, the drivers for their hard work over the two days, management for their support, and a special big thank you to all the employees at Toll Express Eastern Creek who continue to raise funds for the cause. An extended thank you and appreciation to our clients: Church Dwight, Clorox, Masterpet and Shelta, who kindly donated items for the auction. We would also like to take this time to invite any other Toll divisions who would like to join in next year’s convoy occurring on October 24 or October 31, 2010 and help raise money to ensure better care of our sick kids. For further information please contact committee member Kerry Mannix (Treasurer) on 0428 637 025. Once again thank you all for your support. n 33  Hearts to Care for O n Thursday 24 September, Howard Mackie, workshop supervisor at Brunker Rd, Chullora NSW and his wife Kim, son Liam (19) and daughter Laura (15) attended a special morning tea at Government House with Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC and her husband Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE.
