Jill Program
J.I.L.L.: JCSU's Information Literacy and Learning
JCSU’s Information Literacy and Learning (JILL) program is your key to success.
“Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and
have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." Information literacy forms
the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of
education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed,
and assume greater control over their own learning.” Information Literacy Competency Standards for
Higher Education, ACRL, 2000
The Librarians are passionate about “teaching” these skill sets to your students so they may become better
students.
We offer customized series of library instruction classes in some of the following areas:
Searching strategies
Catalog search
Citation
Websites evaluation sources
Writing research
Selecting scholarly journals
Researching controversial topics
Library tour
Copyright/Plagiarism
Popular vs. scholarly sources
Movie review - Errors of 300
We also offer one-shot sessions and the ability to embed instruction into your online or face-to-face classes.
Contact your department liaison or Geneen Clinkscales at X6734 / gclinkscales@jcsu.edu to schedule a class.

Digital Smith
http://library.jcsu.edu/digitalsmith.html
For more information, contact Michelle Orr at morr@jcsu.edu or 704-378-1033
Digital Smith began as a web exhibit in 2003 to showcase items from the Inez Moore Parker Archives of
Johnson C. Smith University. “Down Through the Years: the Heritage of Johnson C. Smith University” was a
project funded by a grant from North Carolina’s Exploring Cultural History Online to be a part of “Beyond
Books and Buildings: North Carolina’s History of Higher Education.” It details highlights of the Inez Moore
Parker Archives housed at the James B. Duke Memorial library and includes finding aids for the collection.
In 2006, the Inez Moore Parker Archives was awarded a grant from the Andrew Mellon foundation to digitize
specific collections which began with the processing of over 3,000 images from the Photograph Collection. In
addition to equipment and software, the grant afforded the library the ability to hire a Digitization Librarian
and a Digitization Assistant which allowed for the efficient creation of digital objects.
In the winter of 2009, the archives began to digitize the audio of the instantaneous disc collection. Funded
once again by North Carolina’s Exploring Cultural History Online, the unique digitization project culminated
into “Saving the Music: the History of the Biddleville Quintet.” The digitization staff received audio
digitization training from experts provided by Safe Sound Archives and they were able to capture 39 events
totaling 652 files which contained audio from the Biddle Quintet, Founders’ Day events, Commencements,
Opening Day ceremonies, and other major happenings on campus during the 1940s.
Current collections include:
A. O. and Dorothy Steele Collection: A. O. Steele was a professor of divinity at Johnson C. Smith University
who also served as Head of the Religious Department among other administrative roles until his untimely
death in 1966. He was married Dorothy Fletcher Steele, a school teacher who served as one of the first
African Americans on the North Carolina Textbook Commission. Their collection is replete with photographs,
correspondence, monographs, personal notes, and other ephemera illustrating middle class African
Americans in the Fletcher and Steele families from the late 1800s until the mid-1990s.
Audio Collection: This collection is made up of digitized recordings of events that occurred on the campus of
Johnson C. Smith University during the late 1930s and into the mid-1940s. Highlights include recordings by
the Biddle Quintet, President H. L. McCrorey's appearance on the radio program "Wings Over Jordan," the
funeral service of Mrs. McCrorey, and an interview with football players before a game against Virginia Tech
University in 1940. This project was enabled by a digitization grant from NCECHO.
The Board of Trustees Collection: This collection currently is made up of information regarding board
member James Egert Allen. Highlights include his work with the YMCA, letters regarding alumni events at the
university, and his memoir that recounts his time spent at Johnson C. Smith University.

  • 3. JAMES B. DUKE MEMORIAL LIBRARY library.jcsu.edu 1 Jill Program J.I.L.L.: JCSU's Information Literacy and Learning JCSU’s Information Literacy and Learning (JILL) program is your key to success. “Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning.” Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, ACRL, 2000 The Librarians are passionate about “teaching” these skill sets to your students so they may become better students. We offer customized series of library instruction classes in some of the following areas: Searching strategies Catalog search Citation Websites evaluation sources Writing research Selecting scholarly journals Researching controversial topics Library tour Copyright/Plagiarism Popular vs. scholarly sources Movie review - Errors of 300 We also offer one-shot sessions and the ability to embed instruction into your online or face-to-face classes. Contact your department liaison or Geneen Clinkscales at X6734 / gclinkscales@jcsu.edu to schedule a class.

DUKE MEMORIAL LIBRARY library.jcsu.edu 16 Digital Smith http://library.jcsu.edu/digitalsmith.html For more information, contact Michelle Orr at morr@jcsu.edu or 704-378-1033 Digital Smith began as a web exhibit in 2003 to showcase items from the Inez Moore Parker Archives of Johnson C. Smith University. “Down Through the Years: the Heritage of Johnson C. Smith University” was a project funded by a grant from North Carolina’s Exploring Cultural History Online to be a part of “Beyond Books and Buildings: North Carolina’s History of Higher Education.” It details highlights of the Inez Moore Parker Archives housed at the James B. Duke Memorial library and includes finding aids for the collection. In 2006, the Inez Moore Parker Archives was awarded a grant from the Andrew Mellon foundation to digitize specific collections which began with the processing of over 3,000 images from the Photograph Collection. In addition to equipment and software, the grant afforded the library the ability to hire a Digitization Librarian and a Digitization Assistant which allowed for the efficient creation of digital objects. In the winter of 2009, the archives began to digitize the audio of the instantaneous disc collection. Funded once again by North Carolina’s Exploring Cultural History Online, the unique digitization project culminated into “Saving the Music: the History of the Biddleville Quintet.” The digitization staff received audio digitization training from experts provided by Safe Sound Archives and they were able to capture 39 events totaling 652 files which contained audio from the Biddle Quintet, Founders’ Day events, Commencements, Opening Day ceremonies, and other major happenings on campus during the 1940s. Current collections include: A. O. and Dorothy Steele Collection: A. O. Steele was a professor of divinity at Johnson C. Smith University who also served as Head of the Religious Department among other administrative roles until his untimely death in 1966. He was married Dorothy Fletcher Steele, a school teacher who served as one of the first African Americans on the North Carolina Textbook Commission. Their collection is replete with photographs, correspondence, monographs, personal notes, and other ephemera illustrating middle class African Americans in the Fletcher and Steele families from the late 1800s until the mid-1990s. Audio Collection: This collection is made up of digitized recordings of events that occurred on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University during the late 1930s and into the mid-1940s. Highlights include recordings by the Biddle Quintet, President H. L. McCrorey's appearance on the radio program "Wings Over Jordan," the funeral service of Mrs. McCrorey, and an interview with football players before a game against Virginia Tech University in 1940. This project was enabled by a digitization grant from NCECHO. The Board of Trustees Collection: This collection currently is made up of information regarding board member James Egert Allen. Highlights include his work with the YMCA, letters regarding alumni events at the university, and his memoir that recounts his time spent at Johnson C. Smith University. History of Johnson C. Smith: This collection holds original letters, speeches, pamphlets, news articles, books, and other documents related to the founding of Johnson C. Smith University. It includes information on the founders and historic properties on and around campus.
