PancreaticCancerAwarenessMonthinNovemberatitsannual PurpleLightvigil onSunday,October26
at 6 p.m.at AtlantaMetropolitanCollege,1630 MetropolitanPkwySW,Atlanta. The eventisagathering
of survivors,families,andfriendsof those affectedbypancreaticcancer,formingacommunityof hope
as theyilluminatepurpleglowstickstohonorsurvivorsandrememberthose whohave foughtthe
disease.
More than 80 communitiesacrossthe nationhostPurpleLightevents,helpingtobringyear-round
awarenessof the goal of doublingpancreaticcancersurvival by2020. Pancreaticcancer isthe deadliest
of the majorcancers, witha five-yearrelative survival rate of just6% (73% of those diagnoseddie within
a year of diagnosis).There are nostandardearlydetectiontoolsandonlyminimallyeffective
treatments. The disease isexpectedtomove fromthe fourthtothe secondleadingcause of cancer-
relateddeathinthe U.S. by2020.
