3. STATEMENT:
During these particularly challenging and turbulent economic times, it has perhaps never been more
important for Maui County and Hawaii State businesses and schools to develop and deepen mutually
beneficial relationships. For the good of all of our citizens, both at present and for the future. And in
ways that preserve and sustain Maui County and Hawaii State’s magnificent natural and cultural
environments and traditions, respectively.
During these times of well‐publicized governmental, educational, and commercial belt‐ tightening,
both our schools and businesses must continue to adapt and improve their practices in order to survive
and thrive in the face of increasing national and international competition.
To attract and keep local talented and hard‐working high school graduates, local businesses must both
offer and effectively market good‐paying and satisfying jobs. And to satisfy the growing needs of local
businesses, local schools must produce graduates that can compete with their mainland or
international counterparts in meeting or exceeding the needs of our local businesses. Yet, both sides
must synergize in ways that do not compromise the ability of our wonderful natural environments and
indigenous traditions to sustain themselves.
The purpose of this press conference is to highlight one such partnership effort, as mutually arranged
between The Ritz‐Carlton, Kapalua and their Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment
Center, and St. Anthony Jr.‐Sr. High School of Wailuku. As an extraordinary example, The Ritz‐Carlton,
Kapalua and the Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment Center has graciously and
generously offered on Tuesday, April 13th
to provide both in‐depth information on and actual on‐site
tours of their various employment departments to the entire St. Anthony student body, faculty, and
staff and administration (about 215 individuals, total).
The AAA Five‐Diamond Ritz‐Carlton, Kapalua is always looking for qualified, local talent to hire, and its
new Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program offers a variety of outdoor
activities with trained naturalists to local citizens and school children of all ages, as well as to visiting
tourists. St. Anthony Jr.‐Sr. High School of Wailuku is a private Catholic and college preparatory
institution with a proud, 161‐year history of preparing local Maui County and Hawaii State youth to
become dynamic community leaders and servants.
