Tumor markers are substances produced by tumor cells or the body's response to tumors that can be measured in blood or tissue. An ideal tumor marker would be exclusively produced by tumor tissue, correlate directly with tumor size, be common to many tumor types, and be easy to assay through automated methods. Currently, no single tumor marker meets all these ideal characteristics.
