1. Learning Objective: Writing and Communication
My college career has been about learning how to write effectively. I look back
on all of the assignments and papers that I had and see the improvement of my writing
skills overtime. Communication is such an important skill set because it is a way to
interact with different people in order to get things done (Nicholson 2010). Without good
communication skills, nothing can be done effectively and efficiency. I have developed
writing and communication skills and learned these skills effectively through different
types of mediums such as screenplay writing and public speaking skills. (IAS website,
n.d).
I have learned to write in different mediums such as screenplay writing. This type
of style of writing was a challenging task because I had to learn how to write
descriptively and in a different format. My first screenplay that I wrote is called
“Imperfection”. This story is about a women who is very successful, however, she has an
“imperfection” on her face. She later meets a drunkard and realizes that no one is perfect
and everyone has an “Imperfection”. The process of writing out the screenplay was a
challenge for me, I had to think creatively and learn how to write in a way that was made
for screenplay writing. It was a different experience for me because I had to learn how to
write a treatment. The treatment is writing in a narrative way. It is different from a
narrative is that the words you can only use is only descriptions and action words; you
cannot add any thoughts or feelings to the character because you cannot see it on screen.
Then from the treatment, I had to figure out how to breakdown the treatment into
different scenes. It was a challenge because the format of the screenplay has only camera
angle descriptions and the actions and lines that the characters are saying. This
assignment has helped me learn a new way of writing. This time it was a medium through
screenplay writing. It is because I had to learn how to write using only descriptions.
Public speaking is a skill I was able to gain throughout my college years. One of
the assignments I had to do was to create a presentation plan and then conduct a 20
minutes presentation to the class. This is a presentation plan was about teaching the class
about an artist of the name, Shirin Neshat. She is an artist that creates images of her that
represents war and male dominance in her country of Iraq. This project helped me

2. become a better speaker because I had to speak in front of the class. I was never a good
public speaker because I would always stubble on my words and look away from the
audience. This presentation helped me overcome my difficulties of speaking and I now
stubble less on my words and give the audience my full attention.
Overall, writing and communication has grown on me. It helped me produced the
skills to become a better communicator in all sorts of mediums because communicating
isn’t just through writing, but also through various technologies and forms.
