WINTER 2015
INSIDE
OUR FAMILY HELPING FAMILIES
FROM OUR CLINIC FAMILY TO OUR COMMUNITY OF FAMILIES
It’s officially the holidays…
and once again we find
ourselves taking the time
to focus a little more
closely on our family
and friends. The CFC is
fortunate to have a large
and extended family of
volunteers, who along
with our community
partners and donors
have had a significant impact on the lives of uninsured families living in our community.
Because of your generosity, our patients have received the gift of better health.
As the New Year approaches, we reflect warmly on the generous support the Clinic
has received the past year and would like to say “Thank you” to our Clinic family… for
continuing to share your time, resources and financial contributions to improve the
health of families in need of medical care.
While we prepare for the holidays and look to celebrate the spirit of the season with our
families and friends, we hope that you will consider making a generous gift to support
the CFC and the families who continue to need our help. Families helping families now …
and throughout the year.

“I’M A WALKING MIRACLE”
LIVING WITH MULTIPLE DIAGNOSES AND FEELING GREAT…
Larry’s been a CFC patient for nearly 15 years, and like so many of our patients,
he has several major health issues to deal with. He came in 2002 seeking help
for his high blood pressure and severe back
pain. In 2007 he was hospitalized with acute
renal failure and experienced 32 days of dialysis
treatments as well as a serious blood infection.
Two years later, his diabetes was diagnosed. All
these medical issues required important lifestyle
changes, and that journey is Larry’s real story.
Larry says that medication adjustments and firm
directions from CFC medical staff saved his life.
He fought his health battles “in the kitchen and
at the gym.” He made huge changes in his diet,
challenged himself to exercise regularly, and took
his medicine faithfully. The results are amazing…
Larry lost 70 pounds, his blood pressure, diabetes
and chronic back pain are under control, and he
takes his medicine faithfully. At CFC, “they really
care that I survive and do well in life.”
It’s officially the holidays…
and once again we find
ourselves taking the time
to focus a little more
closely on our family
and friends. The CFC is
fortunate to have a large
and extended family of
volunteers, who along

MEET OUR 2016 HONORARY CHAIR
MRS. J.O. STONE
The Clearwater Free Clinic is pleased to announce that Ruth Stone will serve as Honorary Chair of
Martinis & Matisse 2016. Mrs. Stone has been a generous benefactor to many local charities and has
been a sponsor of CFC’s Martinis & Matisse for several years.
Ruth and her late husband, J.O. “Jake” Stone, were married over 40 years and were firmly rooted in the
Clearwater area. They enjoyed financial success with their automobile dealerships and commercial
real estate holdings. Ruth continues their legacy of giving back to the community and is honored to
support the Clinic as Honorary Chair. “I love attending Martinis and Matisse; it’s such an elegant event.
We should all be very grateful to this organization and support the efforts of our local doctors, nurses
and volunteers who come to the aid of our neighbors in their time of need.”
There are so many worthy causes, and the Clinic’s staff and volunteers appreciate Ruth’s selection of
the Clinic as one of her chosen charities and thank her for serving as this year’s Honorary Chair.
MEET OUR 2016 FEATURED ARTIST
MARK WABOL
Mark Wabol of Indian Rocks Beach has been chosen as the Featured Artist for Martinis &
Matisse 2016. The son of a machinist, Mark’s love of metal work began as a fascination with cars
and how they are made, developed as a welding student at Pinellas Technical Education Center,
and became a career in art as he combined his love of the ocean with his fine technical skill.
Mark works in his Hot Metal Designs garage workshop and produces stunning, shimmering
pieces for both public display and private appreciation. He especially enjoys collaborating
with prospective purchasers on the design of custom pieces for homes or businesses. Local
collectors commission his work, and his booths actually sell out at selected art shows. From the
impressive Indian Rocks Beach Fire Department sculpture commemorating September 11th to
his whimsical fish shaped hitch cover, Mark is a master at his unique forms of metal work. The
Clinic is proud to have Mark Wabol as the Featured Artist for Martinis & Matisse 2016.

Martinis & Matisse is a unique, fun-
filled event that draws 800 attendees
each year and has consistently sold
out for the past five years. Enjoy unique art, local chef specialties, cool martinis, fine wine
and live music while supporting an organization committed to providing vital services to
the community. When the evening ends you will have experienced a memorable night…and
you might just win a beautiful piece of art.

CFC + HEP = AN EXCITING COLLABORATION
BY CFC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JEANNIE SHAPIRO
For two decades the Clearwater Free Clinic and the Homeless Empowerment
Program (formerly the Homeless Emergency Project) have individually served
Pinellas County’s most vulnerable populations…low-income, uninsured families and
the homeless. Working tirelessly to build and expand programs, both agencies have
enjoyed great success delivering life-changing services. Passionate, and mission-
driven organizations, the CFC & HEP have operated on parallel tracks for years to help
their patients/clients be healthy, independent and self-sufficient…that is until recently.
Last spring CFC and HEP embarked on a small collaboration to identify HEP residents
who qualified for CFC’s services. As neighbors who share a common objective, this
was a natural partnership that could offer HEP residents a medical home rather
than an unnecessary emergency room visit. The Clinic would help qualified HEP
residents manage their acute and chronic illnesses as well as provide behavioral
health counseling that would further assist patients to deal with their medical and life
challenges.
Likewise, HEP who completed the Stanford University’s Chronic Disease Self-
Management Program (CDSMP) and holds the licensing to provide training, has
offered to instruct and guide CFC volunteers in the process and implementation of
the program at the Clinic. CDSMP is a six-week program that assists people to live
better with chronic disease; CDSMP will now be provided at both locations.
Earlier this fall, CFC submitted an application on behalf of both agencies to the Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration
(AHCA). The AHCA Grants were to provide funding to organizations with programs to reduce hospital re-admissions for the
uninsured. We (CFC & HEP) were recently notified that our AHCA grant request for a navigator for each agency, along with some
funding for additional new initiatives,
had been approved.
This is an exciting new era for the
CFC and HEP as we continue to look
for ways to partner and better serve
our community’s needs.

PLEASE CONSIDER ESTATE GIVING
In 1977, the Clearwater Free Clinic opened its doors and provided medical care to those in need one evening a week. In 2015,
the Clinic offers full-time medical care to over 4,000 active patients. We certainly have much to celebrate. With a history of such
growth, we also have much to anticipate in the future…continued growth,
expanding community partnerships, many more people receiving the
health care they simply cannot afford. You can help the Clinic to grow and
expand its mission by considering an estate gift that will continue your
support of the Clinic into the future.
There are many forms of estate giving, and Meg Lokey, Communications
Manager, will be happy to speak with you about them. You can contact
Meg at 727-331-8149 or mlokey@clearwaterfreeclinic.org. Two estate
giving options are direct bequests through your will and charitable gift
annuities that give you income now and a final benefit to the Clinic later.
You can also consider gifts of stocks, retirement plans, and real property.
Estate giving means that you will leave your legacy of support for those
families who will need the Clearwater Free Clinic in the future.

The Board of Directors is happy to welcome Joe Namey, D.O., as its newest member.
Dr. Namey may be a brand new Board member, but he is a treasured old friend to the
Clearwater Free Clinic.
Born in Ohio, Dr. Namey was raised in Erie, PA, where he graduated from Gannon
University. He then moved to Florida in 1983 to attend the Medical School at Nova
Southeastern University in Miami.
After serving his internship at Sun Coast Hospital and his residency at James A. Haley
V.A. Hospital in Tampa, Dr. Namey became board certified in Internal Medicine. After
spending 22 years in private practice, he added two administrative roles…one as Program
Director for Internal Medicine at Largo Medical Center and one as Regional Medical
Director of Hospital Medicine for EmCare.
Initially, Dr. Namey came to the CFC from Sun Coast Hospital as a volunteer resident at
the urging of Dr. Paul Kudelko, Sr. and was later honored as the Clinic’s Physician of the
Year in 1990-1991. He has vivid memories of how gracious and grateful the patients were
at the Clinic, and he remembers that coming to the Clinic “always renewed my sense of
self-fulfillment on becoming a doctor” Dr. Namey is glad to be serving on the Board of the
Clinic because it “accepts volunteers to provide important health care services at low or
no cost to those who need them. Such service will have a positive impact on the health of
the population and thereby improve the community’s perspective of good health.”
The Board welcomes Dr.
Namey and appreciates his
continued support of the
mission of the Clearwater
Free Clinic. “Giving to
people in need is a social
responsibility. Improving
their health puts them on
the road to a better life.”

Providing care for uninsured families... building healthy communities CareGiver WINTER 2015 INSIDE OUR FAMILY HELPING FAMILIES FROM OUR CLINIC FAMILY TO OUR COMMUNITY OF FAMILIES It’s officially the holidays… and once again we find ourselves taking the time to focus a little more closely on our family and friends. The CFC is fortunate to have a large and extended family of volunteers, who along with our community partners and donors have had a significant impact on the lives of uninsured families living in our community. Because of your generosity, our patients have received the gift of better health. As the New Year approaches, we reflect warmly on the generous support the Clinic has received the past year and would like to say “Thank you” to our Clinic family… for continuing to share your time, resources and financial contributions to improve the health of families in need of medical care. While we prepare for the holidays and look to celebrate the spirit of the season with our families and friends, we hope that you will consider making a generous gift to support the CFC and the families who continue to need our help. Families helping families now … and throughout the year. JO H N MEEK, JR. He came in 2002 seeking help for his high blood pressure and severe back pain. In 2007 he was hospitalized with acute renal failure and experienced 32 days of dialysis treatments as well as a serious blood infection. Two years later, his diabetes was diagnosed. All these medical issues required important lifestyle changes, and that journey is Larry’s real story. Larry says that medication adjustments and firm directions from CFC medical staff saved his life. He fought his health battles “in the kitchen and at the gym.” He made huge changes in his diet, challenged himself to exercise regularly, and took his medicine faithfully. The results are amazing… Larry lost 70 pounds, his blood pressure, diabetes and chronic back pain are under control, and he takes his medicine faithfully. At CFC, “they really care that I survive and do well in life.” It’s officially the holidays… and once again we find ourselves taking the time to focus a little more closely on our family and friends. • 3. MEET OUR 2016 HONORARY CHAIR MRS. J.O. STONE The Clearwater Free Clinic is pleased to announce that Ruth Stone will serve as Honorary Chair of Martinis & Matisse 2016. Mrs. Stone has been a generous benefactor to many local charities and has been a sponsor of CFC’s Martinis & Matisse for several years. Ruth and her late husband, J.O. “Jake” Stone, were married over 40 years and were firmly rooted in the Clearwater area. They enjoyed financial success with their automobile dealerships and commercial real estate holdings. Ruth continues their legacy of giving back to the community and is honored to support the Clinic as Honorary Chair. “I love attending Martinis and Matisse; it’s such an elegant event. We should all be very grateful to this organization and support the efforts of our local doctors, nurses and volunteers who come to the aid of our neighbors in their time of need.” There are so many worthy causes, and the Clinic’s staff and volunteers appreciate Ruth’s selection of the Clinic as one of her chosen charities and thank her for serving as this year’s Honorary Chair. MEET OUR 2016 FEATURED ARTIST MARK WABOL Mark Wabol of Indian Rocks Beach has been chosen as the Featured Artist for Martinis & Matisse 2016. The son of a machinist, Mark’s love of metal work began as a fascination with cars and how they are made, developed as a welding student at Pinellas Technical Education Center, and became a career in art as he combined his love of the ocean with his fine technical skill. Mark works in his Hot Metal Designs garage workshop and produces stunning, shimmering pieces for both public display and private appreciation. He especially enjoys collaborating with prospective purchasers on the design of custom pieces for homes or businesses. Local collectors commission his work, and his booths actually sell out at selected art shows. From the impressive Indian Rocks Beach Fire Department sculpture commemorating September 11th to his whimsical fish shaped hitch cover, Mark is a master at his unique forms of metal work. The Clinic is proud to have Mark Wabol as the Featured Artist for Martinis & Matisse 2016. CareGiver www.ClearwaterFreeClinic.org 3 Martinis & Matisse is a unique, fun- filled event that draws 800 attendees each year and has consistently sold out for the past five years. Enjoy unique art, local chef specialties, cool martinis, fine wine and live music while supporting an organization committed to providing vital services to the community. When the evening ends you will have experienced a memorable night…and you might just win a beautiful piece of art. 2015 Honorary Chair: Mrs. J.O. • 4. CareGiver www.ClearwaterFreeClinic.org4 CFC + HEP = AN EXCITING COLLABORATION BY CFC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JEANNIE SHAPIRO For two decades the Clearwater Free Clinic and the Homeless Empowerment Program (formerly the Homeless Emergency Project) have individually served Pinellas County’s most vulnerable populations…low-income, uninsured families and the homeless. Working tirelessly to build and expand programs, both agencies have enjoyed great success delivering life-changing services. Passionate, and mission- driven organizations, the CFC & HEP have operated on parallel tracks for years to help their patients/clients be healthy, independent and self-sufficient…that is until recently. Last spring CFC and HEP embarked on a small collaboration to identify HEP residents who qualified for CFC’s services. As neighbors who share a common objective, this was a natural partnership that could offer HEP residents a medical home rather than an unnecessary emergency room visit. The Clinic would help qualified HEP residents manage their acute and chronic illnesses as well as provide behavioral health counseling that would further assist patients to deal with their medical and life challenges. Likewise, HEP who completed the Stanford University’s Chronic Disease Self- Management Program (CDSMP) and holds the licensing to provide training, has offered to instruct and guide CFC volunteers in the process and implementation of the program at the Clinic. CDSMP is a six-week program that assists people to live better with chronic disease; CDSMP will now be provided at both locations. Earlier this fall, CFC submitted an application on behalf of both agencies to the Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). The AHCA Grants were to provide funding to organizations with programs to reduce hospital re-admissions for the uninsured. We (CFC & HEP) were recently notified that our AHCA grant request for a navigator for each agency, along with some funding for additional new initiatives, had been approved. This is an exciting new era for the CFC and HEP as we continue to look for ways to partner and better serve our community’s needs. FOOD FOR THOUGHT 2015 Thank you to everyone who came out to our 2nd Annual Food for Thought Town Hall Meeting. A very special thank you to Mark Cruise from the Florida Association of Free & Charitable Clinics.
  • 5. CareGiver www.ClearwaterFreeClinic.org 5 PLEASE CONSIDER ESTATE GIVING In 1977, the Clearwater Free Clinic opened its doors and provided medical care to those in need one evening a week. In 2015, the Clinic offers full-time medical care to over 4,000 active patients. We certainly have much to celebrate. With a history of such growth, we also have much to anticipate in the future…continued growth, expanding community partnerships, many more people receiving the health care they simply cannot afford. You can help the Clinic to grow and expand its mission by considering an estate gift that will continue your support of the Clinic into the future. There are many forms of estate giving, and Meg Lokey, Communications Manager, will be happy to speak with you about them. You can contact Meg at 727-331-8149 or mlokey@clearwaterfreeclinic.org. Two estate giving options are direct bequests through your will and charitable gift annuities that give you income now and a final benefit to the Clinic later. You can also consider gifts of stocks, retirement plans, and real property. Estate giving means that you will leave your legacy of support for those families who will need the Clearwater Free Clinic in the future. MAKE A DONATION IN LIEU OF A HOLIDAY GIFT GIVE THE GIFT OF HEALTH Are you struggling to figure out what to get your friends and family for the holidays? Give the gift of health to an uninsured local family. Make a donation to the Clearwater Free Clinic in honor of someone and we will send them a holiday card letting them know of your generosity. Go to www.ClearwaterFreeClinic.org/donate or call 727-331-8149. Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year! • 7. VOLUNTEER NEWS CareGiver www.ClearwaterFreeClinic.org 7 The Board of Directors is happy to welcome Joe Namey, D.O., as its newest member. Dr. Namey may be a brand new Board member, but he is a treasured old friend to the Clearwater Free Clinic. Born in Ohio, Dr. Namey was raised in Erie, PA, where he graduated from Gannon University. He then moved to Florida in 1983 to attend the Medical School at Nova Southeastern University in Miami. After serving his internship at Sun Coast Hospital and his residency at James A. Haley V.A. Hospital in Tampa, Dr. Namey became board certified in Internal Medicine. After spending 22 years in private practice, he added two administrative roles…one as Program Director for Internal Medicine at Largo Medical Center and one as Regional Medical Director of Hospital Medicine for EmCare. Initially, Dr. Namey came to the CFC from Sun Coast Hospital as a volunteer resident at the urging of Dr. Paul Kudelko, Sr. and was later honored as the Clinic’s Physician of the Year in 1990-1991. He has vivid memories of how gracious and grateful the patients were at the Clinic, and he remembers that coming to the Clinic “always renewed my sense of self-fulfillment on becoming a doctor” Dr. Namey is glad to be serving on the Board of the Clinic because it “accepts volunteers to provide important health care services at low or no cost to those who need them. Such service will have a positive impact on the health of the population and thereby improve the community’s perspective of good health.” The Board welcomes Dr. Namey and appreciates his continued support of the mission of the Clearwater Free Clinic. “Giving to people in need is a social responsibility. Improving their health puts them on the road to a better life.” INTRODUCING NEW BOARD MEMBER JOE NAMEY, D.O.
