▪ Russia’s rank in area is 1st (1,70,98,246 Km square) largest in the world and
Brazil’s 5th (85,14,767 Km square) largest in World.
▪ Russia’s population rank is 9th (146.7million)in the world and Brazil’s population
rank is 6th (210million)in the world.
▪ Russia’s official language is Russian and Brazil’s official language is Portuguese.
▪ In Russia major people follow Christianity and In Brazil also major people follow
Christianity.

6. Glance at History
▪ Russia and Brazil saw each-other as faraway overseas lands but in the Soviet
period (November 1917-December 1991) a few thousand Russians went to
Brazil and most of them never back to The USSR.
▪ Even fewer Brazilians visited Russia, majority of them were communists
(Zobolotsky 2007).
▪ Few are students at the International Lenin’s School, all came to Moscow
with false documents but not as part on independent trip, they were sent by
the Communist Party of Brazil (Jeifets 2016).

7. Glance at History
▪ The diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil were first established in
1945, at the end of World War 2. Then relations broken in 1947 and finally re-
established in 1961. Since then till now day both have stable relationship.
▪ From 1963 several agreements and protocols on bilateral trade were singed
it’s miracle for Brazilian economy and beneficial for strengthening of Russian
Brazilian Relations.
▪ But both did not developed a relation in systematic way.

9. Post-Soviet Russia
▪ In 1990s the Post-Soviet Russian Federation was far from the first league of
Brazil’s partners in the world. Russia mostly imports Sugar, Coffee, Tobacco
and Meat from Brazil.
▪ Russia took part at FIFA World Cup in Brazil at 2014.
▪ On August 31, 2016, the Brazilian Senate voted to convict Rousseff, the Vice
President of Brazil , she was accused of illegally manipulating Brazil’s federal
budget.

▪ After impeachment of Rousseff, the Vice President of Brazil Michel Temer became
new President of Brazil.
▪ In May 2017, Brazil applied for joining the Organization for Economic Co-Operation
and Development (OECD).

▪ Brazilian president Michel Temer visited Russia in June 2017,
purpose of the visit was “to encourage Russian investors to invest in
various sectors of the Brazilian economy. He said that there were
over fifty sectors including Energy, Oil and Gas which potentially
could be of economic interest to Russia.”
▪ Now decline in Bilateral relations began to repair in 2017.

12. Doping Allegation on
Russia
▪ In 2014, 800m runner Yulla Stepanova and her husband Vitaly, a former employee of the
Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).
▪ Appeared in a German documentary and lifted the lid on what was later described as
one of the most “sophisticated doping programmers” in sports history.
▪ After two-year Former head of RUSADA Grigory Told The New York Times that Russia ran
a carefully planned, state-sponsored doping scheme.
▪ After all this allegations Russia’s anti-doping lab was suspended in 2015.
▪ After primary investigation, the International Olympic Committee(IOC) removed 111
Athletes from 389 member contingent for the Rio Olympic (2016) then IOC suggested
complete ban on Russia participation in 2018 Winter Olympics at South Korea.

13. Doping Scam of Russia
▪ In December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned
Russia for four years from competing in international events.
▪ In 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) reduced the initial
ban of four years to two years.

2018
▪ In 2018 Presidential Election took place in both states.
▪ In Russia Vladimir Putin once again won the elections in Russia and
he may remain as the President till 2036.

17. Bilateral Economic Trade
▪ Russia’s major trading partner is Brazil in Latin America they both do import
and export of agricultural products, certain kinds of raw materials and
consumption goods.
▪ In 2017, Brazil produced about 90% of pork and one-third of beef exported to
Russia, as Russian Embargo in 2014 on European and North America meat
imports. 40% of Brazil pork and 11% of beef Brazil exports to Russia. There
agricultural trade was US$10 billion
▪ In December 2017, Russia imposed ban on Frozen meat of Brazil because
they see growth of banned stimulator “Ractopamine”.

▪ Brazil received a set of Russian Missile System IGLA-S. It is short range missile
also known as man-portable air defence system(on 27 January 2016).
▪ These were delivered to anti-aircraft artillery units across the country.
▪ It can be used in both urban areas and in areas like Amazon Forest.
▪ It is compatible with Radars such as SABER M-60 and BRADAR.

32. Sputnik V Vaccines
▪ Brazil has approved Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine for import and
emergency use in several states.
▪ Brazil reversed its April decision to ban imports of Sputnik V
vaccine.
▪ Peer reviewed research published in The Lancet in January,
said Sputnik V is safe and 91.8% effective against the COVID-
19 virus.
