2. Show,
don’t tell
There are 5 different stages set up in The Moot
each one will allow you to try out different types
of film equipment to try and recreate a number
of film techniques based on the films of Alfred
Hitchcock. You challenge is to use the clips as
inspiration for your own filming experimentation
so try to find out the solutions for yourself… but
there will be help if you need it.
Continue if you dare…
3. 1. Montage
Montage to Hitchcock meant the assembly of pieces of film which
when moved in rapid suggestion before the eye creates an idea.
He did this by assembling separate images that on their own had
limited impact but when place together in succession had a far
greater one.
Hitchcock’s most famous use of montage is the shower scene from
Psycho which had 78 camera set ups, 52 edits/cut in 45 seconds
of action.
The result is a scene that converts the horror and violence of
the attack but without using continuity editing to follow the
action of the attack.
Your challenge is create a montage of STILL IMAGES to create
the experience of a scene designed to create an emotional
response for the viewer.
One idea would be to construct a similar
type of scene but can you think of any other
emotions you could create using the same
techniques?

4. 2. Show, don’t tell
Hitchcock believe cinema to be a purely visual medium, that
meaning should be conveyed by film techniques rather than relying
on dialogue.
In Hitchcock films you find out exposition through sweeping
camera movements (Rear Window) and understand just how
characters are feeling through dramatic close-ups.
Moving close-up
Extreme close-up
Controlled camera movement to show representation
Axial cut
5. 3. Judy’s Room
Hitchcock used expressionistic lighting to signal key thematic or
narrative elements to the audience or to create awkward imagery to
emphasis emotion.
Coloured lights and chiaroscuro
Moving light source
6. 4. You’re my type…
This scene from Frenzy uses number of compelling camera
techniques as we watch an unwitting Barbara small talk her way to
a violent death in a Covent Garden flat. See you if can recreate the
following from the clip.
Creepy reveal
Walk and talk
Dynamic retreat
7. 4. You’re my type…
Also try a Dolly Zoom
And a moving POV that matches the height and pace of the
character
8. 5. Silhouettes (and shadows)
In this scene from Notorious Ingrid Bergman’s character is
poisoned - we can see the effect it has on her through some clever
use of lighting. See if you can recreate the following:
