HIMMS Presentation Weiss Family
1. THE WEISS FAMILY
PATRICK, MEAGAN & AVERY
Type 1 Diabetes Management of a Baby and Toddler
Through Real-Time Data and Technology
2. AVERY WEISS, 3 YEARS OLD
Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in
February 2014 at age 13 months
No awareness or ability to communicate
low or high blood sugars at any point since
diagnosis
Preschool was willing to learn Type 1
Diabetes management in order for Avery
to stay in school
Within 3 months after diagnosis, Avery
had a Continuous Glucose Monitor
(Dexcom/CGM) and insulin pump
(Medtronic MiniMed)
3. REQUIREMENT FOR REMOTE MONITORING
It is typical for at least one parent of a Type
1 child to stop working to manage the
disease after diagnosis
We utilized Remote Monitoring technologies
to allow Avery to return to preschool full-time
and both of us to return to work full-time
after diagnosis
The Nighscout Project is a community-
developed software to allow parents to
monitor their child’s blood sugar readings
from the CGM via a web browser or smart
watch (in real-time)
6. ADDITIONAL OVERNIGHT MONITORING
o Dexcom Share transmits to both
of our iPhones
o Will alarm to wake us if Avery’s
blood sugar goes too high or low
o Allows us to sleep more normally
and not wake every night for a 2
AM blood sugar check (meant to
prevent dead-in-bed syndrome)
