1. A sneak peek into the USPP at KIC Lagos
By ‘Mayowa Okewumi
Student Services, KIC Lagos
2. 6.31 am
Get up.
I live in the Student Residence in Lekki –
it’s great! It is like a home away from
home – and it is near my College too.
I have 2 roommates and we get along very
well.
Already packed bag and readied clothes
and shoes last night
So I have a shower and get dressed..
Then upstairs to have breakfast with the
others – always good fun in the
Penthouse
3. 7.40 am
I ride the College shuttle to school everyday.
It’s this nice air-conditioned bus - with a friendly
driver. I either use the ride to read my notes or
chat with someone from another room!
I am lucky to live so near College, friends who
don’t tell me what a drag it is to have to take
public transport.
When I first arrived, everything looked the same!
But I have slowly become quite familiar with
Lagos
Out the door
4. 8.35 am
Arrive College
All my classes are on the 7th Floor – I really like this Building
We take the lift upstairs and I head over to Student Services to see if I
can score some chocolate before my first class!
The College staff are friendly and quite caring: every day someone
asks how I’m doing!
Have to remember to speak in my ‘inside voice’
5. 10.25 am
My favorite things
Sitting in first class of the three classes I have today:
My fave class is taught by GA – it’s interesting, funny, extremely
interactive. The tutor links everything to things we are familiar with.
There are debates, often heated but always lots of fun – we are
encouraged to contribute and discuss.
I also like my IT class taught by OA – it’s practical and hands on – and I
especially like the Worksheets and presentations which almost always
are a part of this course.
6. I also like:
DOWN
WITH
…?
My Husky email account and access to Blackboard: All part of
Northeastern University! It makes me great and kind of connected
to the US already.
The speed of the Wi-Fi and being able to download my work and
do research for assignments.
The self-directed study periods – gives me time
to organise my work and discuss projects with
others
7. 12.50 pm
Heard about American style cheerleading event at
month’s end , looking forward to that!
Most LOTC events get buzz going by word of
mouth – Also hear about what’s going on
through Facebook and Instagram.
The social networking sites are great for seeing
what goes on in the CNAU institutions too
A look at
SS Noticeboard..
8. 1.40 pm
Having lunch (yummy jollof rice and peppered chicken today!)
on College 1(what we call the First floor. The food’s great –
we have a mix of US cafeteria-style foods and Nigerian
favourites. We also get to try out different foods from
around the world – for instance during Chinese New Year –
lunch was a Chinese buffet which was very nice.
In College
Cafeteria
9. Digression
a beautiful place
Gym
Adventures shopping windowshopping walking
exploring galleries
Did
you
know?
I am not allowed to use
my phone in class
though
Something about having
to concentrate or focus..
10. Looking at work done in class today and
getting set for tomorrow’s classes – I
will spend a few hours studying after I
go upstairs for dinner
Feeling a little homesick so call my Mum
back home in Akwa-Ibom to chat a
little and that helps..
6.46 pm
Back in my
room
11. 10.40 pm
Get set to snooze!
It’s been another great day
– working towards my
goals!
Feeling tired now so going
to bed. I hope you enjoyed
your peek into my day.
Come back sometime
soon and hang out with
me again.. Bye!
