Dump trucks caused the most backover fatalities from 2005-2010 according to OSHA data, being responsible for 67 deaths. Semi-tractor trailers and regular trucks were the next most common causes of backover deaths. The main reasons for backover accidents included blind spots that obstructed the driver's view, loud worksite noises that prevented drivers from hearing pedestrians, faulty backup alarms, drivers failing to check behind vehicles before reversing, workers riding in unsafe areas of vehicles, and drivers not looking in the direction of travel when backing up.
